performance. She becomes Dylan—

the attitude. There are times when
you forget it’s Blanchett in the role
and it is those moments that clearly
catapult her to the top of the list
for Best Supporting Actress. Since
the Academy has a history of honoring
real-life portrayals, Blanchett
stands a good chance of taking
home the gold.

herself into the white
trash villain of last year’s most powerful movie. With
five films under her belt Ryan is on the fast track to
becoming a Hollywood A-lister and certainly has the
Academy’s attention.
Saoirse Ronan
Atonement
At 13 years old, Saoirse
Ronan has the ability to send
chills up your spine. Even
though the Academy seems
to be recognizing child
actors in the Best categories
more frequently, Ronan’s
nod is still as surprising as
Abigail Breslin’s nod last
year. In Atonement, she acts
alongside most of the heavy hitters in the cast and
makes them all look like rookies.We never saw her on
screen prior to last year but one thing is certain, we
haven’t seen the last of her.

Michael Clayton
How do you balance the
powerful performance of
Tom Wilkinson in Michael
Clayton? You have Tilda
Swinton play the most evil
villain, the soulless lawyer
Karen Chowder. The scene
when Swinton’s Karen
rehearses her speech in the
mirror as she gets ready for
an important meeting, and the last few minutes of the
film show why Swinton deserves the Oscar. As Karen’s
life quickly unravels, Swinton’s Oscar points start to
climb. A worthy nomination and a possible win.
Ruby Dee
American Gangster
Ruby Dee delivers what is
being called “the slap”
heard around movie theaters
when her character
Mama Lucas smacks Denzel
Washington across the
face. She may have the
record for least amount
of screen time for an
actress nominated for an
Academy Award, but when you steal a scene from
Washington, people take notice. The Academy loves
veteran actors, but Dee will have to settle with the
honor of just being nominated.
