Design: Gary Everitt Talk about THE WEATHER... Electric! NEW YORK: Thunderbolts of Lightning! It was dramatic & so exciting! The inaugural LENY opened to the crashing of thunder, flashing of lightning and pounding of rain on the New York streets. It was a storm, we were told, unlike any that had been seen during July for more than 8 years. Well, we figured it was one hell of a welcome to New York from him upstairs! LONDON: A Thoroughly British Summer! If you’re a welly or umbrella manufacturer you have probably had a bumper summer. If not, the chances are that summer 2007 was not the most memorable of seasons! Never fear, there’s good news on the way in the shape of Autumn/Winter 2007/2008. There’s one thing that we can rely upon in the UK & Northern Europe and that is chilly/wet winter weather! (We hope!) The Show & the Buyers: LONDON: Bucking the Trend In terms of buyer numbers, September’s LondonEdge & LondonCentral equalled the February 2007 show and registered an increase of 3% against September 2006. In the context of a bad summer this was an extremely positive outcome. As Cyberdog said “it was the best show we had in years”. To keep up and build on the good work, we now have a dedicated co-ordinator specifically focused on generating new buyers for February 2008 shows. Lawrence’s role will include data building via the internet, various data sources, telesales and through internet forums and the maintenance of our myspace and blog sites. You can find out more later. The Swotty Bit (percentages & stuff): This season 37% buyers came from overseas and 63% from the UK. Within that 37% we had visitors from 40 different countries which, in vaguely alphabetical order, were, …. Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Hungary, Hong Kong, Israel, Ireland, Italy, Iceland, India, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, Sweden, Turkey, USA. You can see the top ten listed below. LONDONEDGE & LONDONCENTRAL Top 10 overseas countries: 1. Germany 24% 2. France 14% 3. The Netherlands 12% 4. Italy 9% 5. Spain 8% 6. Belgium 7% 7. Sweden 5% 8. Switzerland 4% 9. Austria 4% 10. Finland 4% We can always count on Germany, France and Italy being in the top 5 but the remaining places are always on the move. This season The Netherlands, Finland & Belgium have moved up whilst Sweden and Spain have taken a small dip. Notable Buyers: Amongst the throng, representatives from the following high profile retailers visited the show this season: Top Shop, River Island, Cult, Monsoon, Debenhams, Everything But the Music, Virgin Megastores, HMV, El Cortes Ingles, Universal Studios and Matalan. 02 • News Edition 2007
NEW YORK: Rock ‘n’ Roll Lives Eternal In the words of the venue manager Pam Newman “for a first time show you should be really pleased - the overall show was super & looked fantastic” …. And she should know! All in all the show went better than could be expected and without a hitch! It looked amazing, the atmosphere was lively and the merchandise on offer as good as it gets! So positive was the response to the show that Alex Baker, the Editor-in-Chief of Deathrock Magazine, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm by saying “LondonEdge New York is a family reunion of the punk spirit born on 430 Kings Road, Melrose and St Marks. It’s a place where rock n roll lives eternal. I had a wonderful time at the show!” Well you can’t say better than that! The Geeky Part: In terms of buyers we managed to pull in some of the most heavy duty retailers in this market which is no mean feat ….. representatives from Spencer Gifts and EMP amongst others were in attendance. A total of 23 States were represented during the 3 days and a startling 14 countries. 92% of the States in attendance hailed from the Eastern Seaboard and the remaining 8% from the mid to western States. Visiting States included: New York State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Nevada, Rhode Island, Washington, Texas, Virginia, Kentucky, Arizona, N. Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia & South Carolina. In top ten order they were as follows: Entertainment: LONDON & NEW YORK: Chicken Fillets, Buns of Steel & Machete Welding Contortionists!: Witnessing such colourful personalities and performances is all in a days work for LondonEdge, LondonCentral & Leny attendees. This season both New York and London shows were entertained to within an inch of their lives. The return of the infamous & thoroughly fabulous Globe Girls for all three days of the London shows resulted in wall-to-wall drag cabaret performances. From the Andrews Sisters and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to a full on rendition of the Pussycat Dolls there were chicken fillets flying, bodices slipping and badonkadonks well and truly shaken. In July, New York witnessed one heck of a scary act from the contortionist who made a living by balancing on a bed of machetes! Not everyone’s idea of fun that’s for sure but nevertheless entertainment for buyers and exhibitors alike. Alongside this truly masochistic display were wild and wacky acts such as stilt walking grasshoppers, magicians and other eccentrics to keep everyone amused! In amongst the usual array of excellent walkabout artists in London came daily doses of a duet on the centre stage that were surely responsible in entirety for the term ‘buns of steel’!! Two male acrobats took the stage to amaze and delight with displays of sheer strength and balance that were nothing short of mind blowing – truly awesome not to mention the rippling muscles being quite gorgeous to behold!!! 1. Rhode Island In addition to the US buyers were a merry band of European (& beyond) buyers who must have been an added bonus in particular to the many American exhibitors. Traveling, in most cases, some distance across the oceans to visit LENY were the retailers who traveled from Canada, Germany, England, Finland, Japan, France, Denmark, Norway, Austria, Mexico, Italy, Sweden, Israel & China. With comments that reflected much of the feedback we had about the show, HQ magazine had the following to say: “the vendors were some of the best in the industry and the perks were many. This event has the potential to reach an infrequently catered to buying group and has already attracted the largest retailers I know…. This one is bound to grow.
