‘Cultural Crossroads’, the Youth Forum’s selected theme for the
fifth annual InterAct Festival, brings two things to mind. The first,
I’m ashamed to say, is Britney Spears’s regrettable 2002 foray
into road movies. The second is more interesting, and, I think,
reflects the character of the festival as a whole. Put simply, it’s
choices.
In this momentous Derry-Londonderry City of Culture year,
the ‘choice’ of workshops, masterclasses, gigs and screenings
at InterAct has never been greater. Expanded to 10 days to
accommodate our amazing acts, InterAct is delighted to welcome
new partners Arts Ekta, the National Youth Orchestra, the Fresh
Academy of Performing Arts, Magee Core and Hanger 18. Combined
with our tried and tested ‘festival favourites’ (like Bounce’s DJ
School and Janeen Whiteside’s photography), we are sure the
sheer range of activities available – from gaming at the ‘Geek
Night’ to singing with Fra Fee – will make for the most memorable
festival yet.
Choice, though, means something else to myself and the Youth
Forum – the choice to engage. Paul Nolan’s latest Northern Irish
Peace Monitoring Report has noted that whilst young people with
disposable income have embraced a neutral, cosmopolitan arts
scene, for those without these means, arts and culture represent
‘just another form of social exclusion’. The 12 – 21 year olds
that work closely with the Millennium Forum to create InterAct
want everyone to be included. That’s why all our workshops and
masterclasses are FREE, that’s why we have such a broad choice
of events, and that’s why we’re here, year in, year out.
So get stuck in. You’ve got a choice.

Access
We welcome bookings from youth of all backgrounds and
capabilities. A Special Needs Assistant will be available throughout
the Festival. Please let us know when booking if you require any
assistance. All of the Festival Venues are fully accessible for
wheelchair access.
Booking
Events are open to young people aged 12-21 years. Advance
booking is required for all events. Booking opens on July 1st 2013.
Spaces are limited for all events so bookings will be taken on a
first-come first-served basis. Early booking is strongly advised.
