Preparing for your Surgery - Inova Health System

Discharge Instructions
Instructions: When you are ready for discharge, a nurse will
review the instructions specific to your surgery and anesthesia
type. A written copy will be given to you. Feel free to ask any
questions before you are discharged.
Going Home: The nurse will ask your family member/escort
to meet you with the car at the hospital main entrance. You will
be then be escorted via wheelchair to meet your ride.
• Do not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or make
any major decisions for at least 24 hours.
• Plan to rest for at least 12 hours after you get home. It is
common to feel tired, dizzy, sleepy or slightly nauseated
after a surgical procedure.
• Please call your surgeon’s office if you experience any of the
following symptoms:
- Excessive pain and/or swelling
- Excessive drainage or bleeding
- Fever or any other indication of possible infection
like redness or swelling
- Any other symptom or problem you do not feel
is appropriate for the procedure
If you experience any of these symptoms after business hours,
please call your surgeon or go to the emergency room.
Outpatient surgery patients can expect to receive a postoperative
follow-up phone call from our nursing staff within
24-48 business hours after you are discharged.

From Leesburg and points west
Take Route 7 East. Exit onto Lansdowne Boulevard. Turn right at first stop
sign onto Riverside Parkway. Take right into hospital main entrance.
From Tysons Corner and points east
Take Route 7 West. Exit onto Lansdowne Boulevard. Turn right at first stop
sign onto Riverside Parkway. Take right into hospital main entrance.
From Dulles South and points south
Take Loudoun County Parkway. Turn left onto Evergreen Mills Road. Turn
right onto Belmont Ridge Road. Turn right onto Route 7 East. Exit onto
Lansdowne Boulevard. Turn right at first stop sign onto Riverside Parkway.
Take right into hospital main entrance.
