At this annual event, Inova’s eight diagnostic imaging
locations offer free mammograms to patients over 40
with a physician order.
This year Inova provided over 160 free screening
mammograms across Northern Virginia. Inova Alexandria
Hospital locations provided 50 of these screenings,
which resulted in no definitive positive findings and two
cases with a suggested 6 month follow-up.
A six-week gentle yoga series partnered with
an education series available to all breast
cancer patients. Participants learned relaxation
techniques to reduce stress and gentle stretches/
poses to help increase strength and range
of motion. The education series included
presentations on breast cancer development
by a breast surgeon and radiation oncologist;
therapies for breast cancer by a medical
oncologist, breast reconstruction by a plastic
surgeon; patient navigation from a breast care
navigator; a discussion on lymphadema from an
occupational therapist; nutrition from a registered
dietitian; and sexuality and survivorship with a
social worker and oncology nurse.
This year, nearly a dozen women participated
in the event which was made available for all
breast cancer patients across the Northern
Virginia region through direct mail, digital and
social media.

Alexandria City Walk to Fight Breast Cancer

All proceeds from the annual Walk benefit
the Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk Fund at
Inova Alexandria Hospital, which provides
mammograms to uninsured women or to
those in financial need. Since the Walk’s
inception in 1994, over 7,000 women have
been helped due to the generous support
of sponsors, walkers and their pledges.
This year, nearly 1,000 walkers turned
out for the event, including 100 Inova
Alexandria Hospital staff and their
families. The estimated total raised
for 2012 was $90,000.
