At the beginning of term 3, we welcomed a new Head of
Primary Campus, Mrs Margaret Valentine. Mrs Annette
Quirk, who, in Semester One was Acting Head of
Primary, departs soon to Kojonup where she has been
appointed Principal of St Bernard‘s School. During Term
3 St Mary‘s also farewelled Brigid Drummond and Rosie
Sahanna. On the Secondary Campus, Ms Raya Sara
took over from Ms Paula Holt, as Coordinator of Middle
School.
It has, thus far, been a very busy Semester. We
participated in the celebration of NAIDOC, with
numerous and various activities, culminating in a whole
school paraliturgy and a Primary School Assembly. It was
a wonderful week, with one of the Prayers of the Faithful
memorably summing up the spirit of NAIDOC: ―Help us
acknowledge that different people live in this country.
Help us to remember our culture, to respect our elders
and to be proud of who we are. Let us all respect each other as one family.‖ This is worth repeating
often as a prayer, not merely a sentiment, but a serious resolution to always treat one another
properly.
Early in term 3, we welcomed the girls and staff from Genazzano FCJ College and the boys and staff
members from Xavier College, and in Exchange, our own St Mary‘s students visited Melbourne later in
the term. In August, we also held another Parent Forum, to assist us in the task of formulating our
strategic plan for the College. This was well-attended and productive. We also installed the MAZE
computer system to more efficiently produce school reports. Towards the end of August, the P&F
hosted a most successful Quiz Night, and we take this opportunity to thank all our generous sponsors,
whose donations of prizes and gifts made this fundraiser possible.
The Angelico Exhibition in Perth was most gratifying for St Mary‘s, as two of our students, Simon Hill
and Amira Benterrak, won significant prizes. Our students traditionally have been very successful at
the Angelico Exhibition, and this year, we were granted the honour of acting as hosts for Angelico
Exhibition functions. We trust this fine tradition of excellence will continue. St Mary‘s also has many
sporting stars, and we are proud to announce that Brent Gore was selected for Western Australia as a
representative for the under 15 Indigenous Carnival, held on Queensland‘s Gold Coast. Others
undertook international travel: several members of Broome community and some of our students
attended World Youth Day in Madrid, and six students and three staff travelled to Taiji in Japan on the
Cultural Exchange Programme.
As the term progressed, the year 5 camp was held and St Mary‘s hosted visiting teachers from La
Grange and Notre Dame, as well as participating keenly in activities run by the energetic young people
from the Edmund Rice Foundation. This coincided with the visit with a group from the Christian
Brothers. There was also Book Week, with all the exciting events connected with this. These were
enthusiastically received, especially the Book Parade on our Primary Campus. Our students
participated in the final Broome ‗Worn Art‘ Exhibition, in the ‗Storm the Stage‘ drama event, and in a
Science Day which was held on the Secondary Campus.
As we are moving towards term 4, it is time to support all those students who have examinations and
all those who are about to finish school. Next term there will be many functions as we draw the year to
a conclusion and I ask you to join with us as the College community to celebrate and be thankful for all
we have.
God bless,
Mr Alan Farley,
head of primary campus
NAIDOC Week was my beautiful introduction to St Mary‘s College Community. The entire
week buzzed with a huge variety of activities and visitors. Students from different year
levels were able to join together to produce some wonderful art works. The culmination of
the week allowed the whole school to join together on the Primary Campus to share in a
very meaning Liturgy coordinated mostly by Brigid Drummond. The message for NAIDOC
Week being ‗Change: The next step is ours!‘
From this moment on the calendar has been absolutely packed with the many events
which make up the school weeks. Class Liturgies are held every week in the Nulungu
Chapel. I love the fact that Father Ernesto visits different classrooms on a weekly basis to
share the Gospel which will be read at the year level Liturgy. He is able to put the Gospel
reading into ‗kids-speak‘ which helps students better understand God‘s Word. If you have
not had the opportunity to visit the Chapel I encourage you to check the calendar and attend your children‘s class Liturgy or Mass and
immerse yourself in this amazing place.
Mr Lloyd too has a wonderful way in which he shares the Gospel from the Sunday Mass. I, like the children, particularly enjoy the way
he brings the Gospel to life every Monday. He has a gift of bringing the Bible to life and I strongly encourage parents and friends to
attend our Gospel Assemblies which are held every Monday.
The Physical Education program during term three included the Interschool Cross Country, the Primary Athletics Carnival, Interschool
Jumps, Interschool Athletics and Surfing. Miss Sam is to be congratulated on the professional way she has gone about organising
these events. All events ran smoothly and from all reports parents, students and staff enjoyed being a part of the different days. The
surfing program is great! This program not only teaches students how to stand up on a surf board it also alerts them to be aware where
to surf and of the dangers involved with being at the beach.
Two year levels participated in camps during this term. Year Four students had the Edmund Rice Afterschool Camp which was very
successful. This camp was run after school and the activities provided were very challenging. The final day of this camp was run on a
Saturday with a variety of beach activities on offer. It is hoped to have this camp offered again next year.
The Year Five group went to Barn Hill for their Camp. This group along with their teachers managed to do a lot of fundraising to help
keep the cost for parents to a minimum. Miss Marian and Miss Tanya worked enthusiastically to ensure every possible minute would
be accounted for during the camp time. Thank you to the volunteers who assisted throughout the week as well as the students for their
excellent behaviour.
Weekly assemblies are always fun and it has been heartening to see so many parents and friends attending. Assemblies provide the
time for children to showcase what has been happening within their classroom. It also provides an opportunity for all students to speak
or perform in front of a crowd.
Book Week this year began with all primary students and teachers rejoicing in song about books. An evening story telling session by
parents, priests, teachers and a student was wonderful. Special visitors during the week also shared stories with different year levels
and the parade on the Friday was impressive indeed. Miss Di and her band of helpers are to be complimented on their hard work.
If you missed out on seeing the St Mary‘s College Worn Art group you certainly
missed a spectacular event. It is hoped that this group will be showcased at an
end of year function. Teachers and parents involved in this project were
marvellous. The finished pieces were second to none and congratulations to all
involved are well deserved.
parents and friends
Being a member of the Parents & Friends is proving to be more of a rewarding experience than I expected. As a parent I hope that I
am helping my children learn, and that I am nourishing their experiences at school, but as a member of the P&F I know I am helping
more than just my child to enjoy their experiences at school.
The P&F is a constructive group of parents that brings individual ideas and skills to share and we always seem to bring these
together to work towards a common goal.
Through fundraising from last year and this year we have been able to provide some awesome library resources to Miss Di to help
her engage students in the Primary Library. Pre-primary parents have been invited to participate with the pre-primary classes to help
use the games, light boxes, wooden figurines and other equipment that were purchased with P&F funding. Reading in the Year 1
classrooms has been enhanced with brand new readers and on the Secondary Campus the gym has more equipment for students to
get fitter and stronger. For the benefit of the whole College community and for visiting school communities at the sports carnivals,
you may have seen the St Mary‘s College shade structures, purchased and organised by the P&F.
The P&F also provided the Milo and biscuits at the wonderful storytelling night. Congratulations must go to Miss Di and all the story
tellers! We also supported the construction and planting of a Kitchen garden which is now flourishing. The P&F members cooked
and served at the ‗Jandamarra‘ performances that took place at our College in the July holidays. I helped out and found the sense of
community and opportunity for fun and fellowship with parents, staff and students worthwhile, not to mention we raised more money
to spend on our students. An upcoming event is the Movie Night for the whole family to be held on the Primary Campus later in Term
4—the date is Friday November 4th.
Please consider contributing to the P&F in whatever capacity you can because, as I have found, when you volunteer for a group like
the P&F, it benefits the P&F as well as the school community. It can also benefit you, the volunteer, in many ways.
Next meeting is Tuesday November 1st, Secondary Staffroom, 7pm. We hope to see you then!
Edmund Rice Network visit—
Nulungu revisited
A group of people from the Edmund Rice Network visited St. Mary's
College from August 21st - 26th. The group included one of the founders
of Nulungu College Br Peter Hardiman. Nulungu Secondary
College amalgamated with St. Mary's School in 1995 to form St. Mary's
College.
The group explored the story of the Christian Brothers presence in
Broome since 1970. As part of the experience the story of Nulungu was
shared and the possibility of on going partnerships were established. The
week concluded with a Mass in the Nulungu Chapel where Br Hardiman
also explained the symbolism of the stain glass window.
The week was co-ordinated by Donella Brown Regional Indigenous
Facilitator and Resource Advisor Formation - Western and South
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL 2011
The PAF Tour has been a huge success again this year with the
secondary students from St. Mary’s College performing a
showcase of items in Perth during August.
Our senior Didgeridoo Ensemble students played to a very large
gathering for the official opening of the Angelico Art Exhibition in
St. George’s Terrace Perth. The senior girls hosted this event
with the food service and hospitality duties and were highly
commended by the Director of Catholic Education for their
efforts. The honour of hosting the event opening was as a
result of Caitlin Morrison, Year 12 Graduate 2010, winning the
Fra Angelico Prize in the 2010 exhibition.
The Dance Troupe of twenty six students put on a spectacular
array of items at the Perth Convention Centre, Drama students
performed to a very high standard at the Prendiville Theatre in
Ocean Reef and have gained outstanding accolades from the state adjudicators. Finally, our vocal solo students
took the opportunity to show off their talents at the Zenith Music studio in Claremont and wooed the
crowd with their heartfelt songs of self belief, courage and love.
ook week
‘One World, Many Stories’ – Book Week on
the Primary Campus
What a great week! Classes had been preparing all term for the
highlight of our reading year – a week long celebration of books and
reading. Book Week opened with an amazing ‗flashdance‘ called
‗Gotta Keep Reading‘. Miss Tanya and Miss Kiren had brilliantly
prepared all of the classes with words and actions, and the entire
school participated complete with books. It will go down in St Mary‘s
history as possibly the most exuberant opening we have ever had!
We then launched into Storytelling Night with an amazing array of
storytellers. We laughed, shivered, and got excited about the stories
told by parents, teachers, priests and children. We jumped with the
naughty monkeys on the bed, chanted the ‗Wombat Stew‘ song,
marvelled at Fr Ernesto‘s musical skills and giggled as little Georgia
made animal noises for ‗Dear Zoo‘. Some of us are still a bit spooked
by Mr Lloyd‘s scary tale but all agreed it was one of the best nights we
have had. During the night Mr Michael Lake made a surprise
presentation of some restored panels which were done for Book
Week in 1993 by the children of Broome. They are amazing!
Some classes took up the 2011 Challenge and read silently for 2011
seconds or 33 mins 31 seconds. Many students made huge efforts to
‗read around the world‘ and fill up their reading passports with stamps
to earn rewards. Everyone made a fantastic job of decorating the
Primary Library with brightly coloured paper children, family trees,
woolly lions and children in national costume to highlight the theme for
the week.
Everything came to a spectacular conclusion on Book Day. Virtually
the entire school came dressed as either book characters or a person
from another country. We had a magnificent robot, a beautiful Korean
lady, two very scruffy characters from ‗The Twits‘, several Rapunzels,
a Billy the Punk and various Cinderella‘s, Red Riding Hoods and even
Frankenstein. The teachers were also transformed with special
mention going to Pippi Longstocking (Miss Sam), Bob the Builder
(Miss Sara), the Scarecrow (Miss Collie), Moustafa the Arab (Mr Tim)
and not to forget Mr Happy (Miss Margaret).
Some of our talented teachers brought the ‗Book of the Year‘ books to
life in a series of plays which the students immensely enjoyed. We
had the traditional Grand Parade and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
As an extra treat, both Primary and Secondary were entertained by
Valanga Khoza who visited the school in the following week. Valanga
is a South African storyteller, author and musician who spoke about
life in Africa, told stories and brought some African rhythm to Broome.
It was a memorable Book Week this year with lots of fun, learning,
story and music. We truly enjoyed the theme of ‗One World, Many
Stories‘.
worn art 2011
St Mary‘s College was strongly represented this year at the 2011
Worn Art Spectacular.
Nineteen students from the Primary campus and two students from the Secondary campus attended the weekly after
school activity program where the students learnt the skills of creative costuming.
Students planned and created their ‗Under the Sea‘ costumes from a variety of materials. They learnt that costumes can
be produced from a variety of inexpensive materials with impressive results.
The students were outstanding in their creativity, performance and display of good conduct. They were confident and
proud as they made the stage come alive with a dazzling display of colourful ocean activity, wowing the audience with
their talents.
The program would not have been successful without the dedication and assistance of many staff including Miss Tanya,
Miss Josie, Miss Nikki, Miss Sarah and Miss Helen C.
melbourne cultural exchange programme
The Melbourne Cultural Exchange program is now in its
24th year and has played an integral role in building
relationships and understanding between two cultures,
encouraging students to become positive voices for social
justice and reconciliation.
At the beginning of Term 3 St Mary‘s College welcomed
eight students from Genazzano and Xavier Colleges in
Melbourne. While in Broome the students stayed with host
indigenous families from St Mary‘s and attended school
with their host brothers and sisters each day and
participated in excursions to indigenous service
organizations after school.
The Melbourne students also visited remote communities and spent
time in the schools at Bidyadanga and Lombadina.
Cultural Exchange to Melbourne
The 2011 Cultural Exchange was a life changing experience for everyone
involved. From football to fencing, French to Latin lessons and tolerating
the weather to negotiating their way around the city, the St. Mary's
students have participated in all new learning experiences with
enthusiasm and quiet confidence. Their willingness to challenge
themselves and step outside their comfort zone was wonderful.
Their host families and Genazzano and Xavier schools showed great care
and love towards the students and made them feel extremely safe and
welcome in a foreign environment. Congratulations to the following
participants, who represented themselves, their families and St. Mary's
with great pride: Rodney Pindan, Brent Gore, Kalen Morrison, Johei Hamaguchi, Alice Shadforth, Miranda Mosquito,
Lillian Banks and Wendilyn Torres.
Six Taiji Exchange students and four staff arrived in Broome at the end
of August to participate in the third exchange visit byTaiji Elementary
students to St Mary‘s College. The students stayed with host families
attending school the students were involved in a number of excursions
in and around Broome including the Japanese Cemetery, Malcolm
Douglas Wilderness Park, camel ride on Cable Beach followed by
The Broome students attended Taiji Elementary School and were able to share their culture and traditions with theTaiji
students and their families. The links between the two towns was celebrated at the Civic Reception—the St Mary‘s
exchange participants dressed in summer kimonos, and Johei in a ‗happy suit ‗, were formally welcomed to Taiji and
entertained by cultural presentations by Taiji students. St Mary‘s girls also invited to perform—which they did with great
confidence and professionalism.
After leaving Taiji the St Mary‘s students spent time immersed in and learning more about Japanese culture and
traditions in Kyoto and Hiroshima. A wonderful experience for all participants!
Gold 934
Our secondary faction athletics carnival this year was
successfully run and saw some outstanding performances by
students. The faction carnival had a high participation rate
from the majority of students which made the overall results
high scoring. Blue and Gold factions need to work hard next
year to try and take the shield away from Green!
The interschool carnival this year included two students from Fitzroy Crossing and it is hope that next year
we can include other schools from around the Kimberley to make it a bigger event. The competition
between all schools was very tight this year and there were some very close contests! SMC students
received the majority of individual medallions and should be very proud of their efforts.
wkfa
Term 3 has been an extremely busy one for the West Kimberley Football Academy with many events, camps and
educational activities dominating the calendar. This term we continued with Tuesday morning and Wednesday
afternoon training sessions. The morning sessions are followed by a shower and breakfast at the Academy which is a
great way to get the boys up and going for their day at school.
The first major event was an information/practical session from Foodbank Australia providing guidelines on healthy
eating and nutrition. This was a hands-on approach from the Foodbank guest speakers and was extremely informative
for our boys as it falls in line with one of our core values, healthy lifestyles.
Week 3 saw the second annual West Kimberley Clontarf Employment forum take place at St Mary‘s Hospitality and
Tourism Centre. The forum was a success again this year with Academy year 11 and 12 boys getting exposure to
many local businesses and training organisations.
In week 4 the Academy junior teams took off on the 18 hour bus trip to Katherine in the Northern Territory for the
Clontarf Northern Carnival. This is the largest junior carnival with 12 different Clontarf Academies competing. The
teams were picked on school and training attendance as well as general behaviour. This year our Broome 1 team
made the grand final, unfortunately going down to Alice Springs in the final. Brent Gore and Lawrence Victor both made
the All Star Team for their wonderful efforts throughout the carnival.
The senior team headed to Fitzroy Crossing in week 6 for the Troy Bycroft Shield. Our boys were fantastic this year
going through undefeated and taking out the grand final against Halls Creek. Rodney Pindan was awarded best player
for us and Brennon Charlie showed great leadership throughout the carnival as Captain.
On top of all this there have been some personal highlights for some academy members across the term.
Anthony Morgan has just been offered a school based traineeship at H and M Tracey where he will work one day a
week.
Brent Gore Year 9 travelled to the Gold Coast to represent the state in an under 15 Indigenous All Star Team, WA
won the national Grand Final and played in a Curtain Raiser for the AFL game between Hawthorn and Gold Coast.
Imran Paddy continued school based traineeship role with Garnduwa one day a week. After he graduates from Year
12 at the end of this year Imran will continue with his traineeship while studying Sport and Recreation at TAFE in
2012.
Kalen Morrison, Brent Gore and Rodney Pindan participated in the Cultural Exchange Programme to Xavier
College in Melbourne and were able to go to some AFL final matches.
There‘s a lot more to come with carnivals for the juniors and seniors still in the pipeline as well as some end of term activities.
To all the boys keep on track with your schooling and enjoy the upcoming break.
senior ball
The last Saturday night of Term 2, the Senior School Ball was
held in the Undercover area on the Secondary Campus.
The venue was transformed into a Parisian nightspot, guests
entered under the Moulin Rouge Windmill and students
entered with their partners and took their places on the dance
floor to perform the dance steps practiced over past weeks.
What a night of glamour and fun! Staff and parents joined the
students in a wonderful evening, dining and dancing the night
away.
past students
Annie Dann—Graduated from St Mary’s College in 2003
From 2003 – 2009 Annie worked with Goolarri Media Enterprises, at the
same time continued her studies and completed a Diploma in Events
Management.
Although Annie graduated in 2003, she is still a familiar face around St
Mary‘s College at Athletics Carnivals and sporting events as she is
currently working as Regional Administration Support Officer with Garnduwa
Amboorny Wirnan. Annie is a strong role model for all students she works
and comes in contact with, showing that with focus and dedication you can
achieve your dreams.
In the near future Annie will be working with the David Wirrpanda Foundation
delivering the ―Dare to Dream‖ Program to Cable Beach Primary School and
at the students at Broome Residential College.
Slade Sibosado
Slade Sibosado left St Mary‘s College and the West Kimberley Football
Academy in 2006 to pursue his apprenticeship in the building/carpentry
industry. He initially went to Perth where he started his apprenticeship in the
South West country town of Collie. Citing the extremely cold weather and
lack of skill development he returned to Broome in 2008 looking for a
transfer to a building company in his home town. He had to wait 6 months
before he could join H and M Tracey, one of the biggest building companies
in the Kimberley. He then continued his apprenticeship with H and M Tracey
where his desires for higher duties and skills were met. He has since
finished his apprenticeship to become a full time ticketed tradesperson and
is a highly regarded member of the H and M Tracey team.
Slade was the guest speaker at the WKFA Careers Day at St Mary‘s
College in August.
Brendan Rahman and Lara Doven,
Past St Mary‘s College students were married by Bishop Christopher
at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cathedral in Broome on 16th July.
Brendan participated in the Melbourne Cultural Exchange
Programme both while he was a student at St Mary‘s College, and an
accompanying staff member when he was a member of the Grounds
Staff at St Mary‘s College.
Congratulations and best wishes Brendan and Lara.
