St Mary’s College Broome
From the Principal: Mr Tony Treacy
Welcome to the Term Two edition of ‘Listening Hearts.’ We are developing this quarterly
publication as a means of communicating to all interested in our College community our recent
activities but also the energy and ideas that contribute to the growing culture of our
school.
As we move into our last month of preparations for the Centenary celebrations it has been
humbling to hear from so many people sending messages of good will. We have received
responses from past principals, teachers, students and friends far and wide as they make plans to join our celebrations.
We look forward to seeing all our current families throughout the week of the 26 th July to 2 nd August.
It will be a pleasure to welcome visitors from Taiji in Japan, during the Centenary celebrations. As the Japanese community
of Broome featured in the story of St Mary’s from its’ earliest days, it is fitting that Mr. Shiomi the Principal of
the Elementary school in Taiji, with six students and two staff members from Broome’s sister town join us at this time.
I extend my sincere appreciation to our families who have offered to host the students during their stay.
This Term was alive with learning activities which have produced so many positive outcomes. I commend our students
for their hard work and the staff for their dedication to providing a wonderful learning environment for our children.
The mid-year reporting process is complete and I thank our primary parents for their partnership in meeting with
staff and we look forward to meeting our Secondary parents early in Term Three.
I trust all will enjoy this publication and wish our families a safe holiday period with the chance to spend quality time
with your children and the children able to rest and refresh ready for an exciting third term.
Student Leadership Team:
Student leadership is an important part of school life on both the Primary and
Secondary Campuses.
At the beginning of the 2008 school year, student leadership took a new direction
on the Secondary campus. In the past our student leaders were known as
the SRC or Student Representative Council. Amongst many changes that occurred,
the name of our student leadership group has been changed to the Student Leadership Team. There are representatives
from each year level as in the past.
With the changes, came a fresh approach to the everyday running of the school with students and staff working together
to achieve the best possible outcomes for every student. The role of the SLT has become even more important
and will play an even bigger part in our school life, for the remainder of the year.
The ‚Get on Board‛ program is a program which focuses on getting students to become more actively involved in all
aspects of St Mary’s College. There is a focus on education and learning, sense of community, responsibility for one’s
behaviour and individual student ownership of these things. Assemblies and activity workshops are held on a regular
basis to reaffirm what the students are doing, also to develop strategies to improve responsibility, punctuality, pride in
uniform, respect for oneself and for others, working together as a whole school community taking ownership of the
school and what happens in the school and the public image of the school in the community. Activities this term have
included repainting the bollards at the front of the secondary campus, rubbish pick ups, gardens tidied, locker clean-up
and botanical signage for our native trees and shrubs. We have also had a couple of fun days as a reward for the students
hard work.
At the beginning of the year the SLT members attended a leadership day to work with a number of guest speakers to
enable them to improve their own skills, especially teamwork, public speaking and leadership.
The Leadership Team will continue to work closely with staff to improve and extend this program and the culture of
learning at St Mary’s College.

St Mary’s College Cultural Exchange to Melbourne
26 th April – 24 th May, 2008.
As they prepared for their journey to Melbourne, the students
selected to go on this year’s exchange wanted to gain
an insight into life in the city. Living with a host family, and
being a part of the everyday life of that family, to attend a
large academic school, and to have the opportunity to be
involved in the many experiences that would come their
way. The students were also all looking forward to having
the opportunity to share their culture with their host families
and with students in the schools they were visiting. They
wanted to learn about the culture and lives of the families
and students they lived and went to school with.
Reflecting on their four weeks in Victoria, the students were
positive about their experiences. They are grateful to the
host families and schools who provided the opportunity for
them to be part of a different way of life away from their
family life in Broome and their schooling at St Mary’s College.
Art Auction, 9 th May, 2008.
The Cultural exchange program between St Mary’s
and Genazzano and Xavier Colleges is in its 20 th
year.
Recognising the difficulty of fundraising a significant
amount of money annually in a small rural
community, and to ensure the future of the exchange,
Genazzano FCJ
College hosted an Indigenous Art Auction. The
broad collection of paintings from across the Kimberley,
included traditional ochre paintings from
desert artists, Wandjina spirit paintings of the artists
from the Derby area, to contemporary indigenous
paintings from Broome, were generously donated by the
artists.
The eight 2008 St Mary’s College Cultural Exchange
student and two staff members were in Melbourne and
attended the event. St Mary’s College Cultural Exchange
Co-ordinator Ms Vicki McKenna and Joe Ross,
Chairperson of the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program,
both spoke about the importance of establishing
and maintaining relationships between indigenous and
non-indigenous people, and the importance of the positive
outcomes for participants and families and the
schools involved in the
Exchange Program.
About 300 people attended the auction, and enthusiastic
bidding for the 44 pieces of art work resulted in all the
work being sold, and enough money raised, to establish
the St Mary’s Cultural Exchange Fund.
Jennifer Cambridge
All the St Mary’s Exchange students felt that their host
families valued family life, and providing an education for
their children, so that they will be able to follow their chosen
career. They also realized that to achieve their goals the
students had to focus on their studies, working hard at
school and their homework.
The students enjoyed, among many excursions and experiences,
going to AFL matches, a trip to country Victoria,
catching up with Mr Simon, a past teacher from St Mary’s at
Bendigo Catholic College, and their visit to Sovereign Hill
in Ballarat. The food tasting tour at Queen Victoria Markets
and the visit to VICTECH where they listened to, and met
three inspirational indigenous sportsmen – Michael Long,
Dean Rioli and Anthony Mundine, were memorable experiences.
As the students prepare for their host brothers and sisters to
come to Broome on the return Exchanges, they are looking
forward to sharing their culture and lives with the Melbourne
students.
College Assemblies in Term 2.
Remembering Anzac Day
This year Anzac Day fell in the school holidays. So, on the first assembly
day in Term Two, Wednesday, April 30 th , both the Primary and
the Secondary campuses of St Mary’s College joined together in the
undercover area of the Secondary College to commemorate the anniversary
of the first major military action fought by the Australian and
New Zealand Army Corps.
The students listened to our guest speaker, Ted Davies of the British
Army, who has been the secretary to the Broome RSL, speak about the
bravery and courage of Australian soldiers and the sacrifice they made
for our country in all the wars they fought in.
The students stood silently as the Ode was recited and the Last Post
was played. Students then honoured the fallen men and women with a
minute’s silent reflection. The bugle then played The Rouse after
which everyone repeated, “Lest we forget.”
Mr Ted Davies delivers the Anzac address
Students were dismissed to their classrooms having paid their respects
to the soldiers who died for their country.
Primary School Assemblies
The children in Pre-Primary have been studying fairytales all term. This theme has been integrated into all learning
areas and class activities. We have focused on size comparisons, ordinal numbers and story structure. Our buddy class
5/6 MF has worked with PPA through lots of activities. To conclude this topic we shared our assembly with them by
presenting Goldilocks and the Three Bears in both Aboriginal English and Standard Australian English. The children
all spoke clearly into the microphone and presented themselves well to the audience. The assembly was lots of fun and
enjoyed by the school.
St Mary’s College staff and students joined parishioners and community
members to walk with, and to help carry the Icon and Cross into
Broome. The procession started from the One Mile Community,
through Chinatown, up Kennedy Hill to the Prison, before moving to
the Cathedral for the official welcome to Broome.
A liturgy was held at the Senior Campus to welcome the Icon and
Cross to St Mary’s College. The Icon and Cross was carried to the
Primary Campus and erected in the Holy Place where classes gathered
for reflection.
ST MARY’S COLLEGE LIBRARIES ...
FUN IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL LIBRARY
The Library is always a very busy place. Each day children
come and discover how much fun reading can be. They hear
about new and exciting books each week and many reserve
books regularly. There is always just the right book for everyone,
and we search until we find it. Most of the children
know how to search the Library catalogue on the computers.
At lunchtime the Library is a popular place to be.
Some children are on computers, some play chess, some play
board games, some read on the cushions and some use the
Smart Board to play Library games and others colour in or
find fun on the activity table.
The children are always willing to help tidy up, clean and put
books away.
Early in the year we had Andy Wright, a storyteller who de-
lighted the children with his stories of growing up.
He impressed everyone with his vitality and enthusiasm
and he inspired many children to go away
and write their own story.
Book Week 2008 is in week 5 of Term 3, the theme this year
is “Fuel Your Mind”. We have a display of the shortlisted
books for the Australian Children’s Book of the Year competition
and we are reading one book each week. We enjoy trying
to predict the gold medal winners. We have already booked
our times with guest author Elise Hurst who will be at the Public
Library during Book Week.
Our Library is a place for fun and learning where
students can enjoy both the old and new technologies.
Whether they are reading a book, listending to
a story, using the Smart Board, or researching on a
computer, the students are acquiring skills that will
last a lifetime.
Families at the P & F film night
The College Parents and Friends have had a busy term. ‚Surf’s
Up‛ was screened early in Term 2 on the Primary Oval. The
atmosphere was warm and welcoming, there was a wonderful
selection of curries available for dinner, and we managed to
raise over $2500.
It was great to look out to the sea of faces enjoying the night
and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying a relaxed
evening together and with friends.
During Term 3 the Parents and Friends will host a series of
family information evenings. The topics are Resilience
(August 5), Additive Alert (Aug 26) and Cyber Bullying (Sept
9). The talks will aim to provide useful practical information
for parents and will be an opportunity for parents to come together.
We invite all families of the Broome community to
take the opportunity to come along and hear these varied and
interesting speakers. Further details will be available early in
Term 3.
As always, the Parents and Friends are keen to hear new ideas
and would welcome your input. We would love to hear from
you if you have anything from the odd hour free, where you
maybe able to help, or are keen to join in the discussions at our
monthly meetings. It would be great to hear from you.
SPECIAL EVENTS ...
St Mary’s College Feast Day – 23 rd May.
Our whole College Feast Day Mass was celebrated by Bishop
Christopher, Father Daniel and Father Richard at the Secondary
Campus undercover area. This was a special occasion to
once more celebrate the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians
who is the Patron Saint of Broome and Australia. The tradition
of crowning the statue of Mary and the throwing of flowers
was commenced by our first priest in Broome, Fr. Nicholas
Emo on the site now occupied by Streeters over 100 years
ago. The students were commended for their prayerful attitude
and excellent participation.
After Mass the Secondary students went to BRAC to enjoy a
day of activities and fun while the Primary students were
involved in a tabloid sports day on their Campus.
Linney’s Art Awards.
Recently some of the St Mary’s students participated in the annual
Linney’s Art Competition held in Broome. The 2008 Art
Competition was opened this year to include schools from
Derby, Lombadina/Djarridjin, Beagle Bay, One Arm Point and
Bidyadanga. St Mary’s submitted entries from both the Primary
and Secondary Campuses and included Visual Art and Digital
Imaging. The theme this year was ‘Kimberley Kids At Play’ and
the artwork was on display at the Boulevard for two weeks in
May. Congratulations to all students who participated and especially
Two Boarders report from the Residential College
My name is Jannen Spry-Wiggan I come from Derby but all of my family come from One Arm Point
and Pendar Bay. I spend a lot of my holidays at One Arm Point with my dad and his family. We go
hunting, fishing, camping and do a lot of spear gun diving.
I first came from Derby to Broome on a plane to attend St Mary’s school. I am now living at the
Broome Residential College. Living at the college is fun because I have lots of fun laughing, telling
jokes with all my mates. We muck around at night playing games and we have our own basketball
team. Some times I don’t go home on the weekends because every Saturday morning I play for the under
15’s football team for the Saints we haven’t lost a game yet. It’s a great team who play together
and still have fun.
This is my second year here at St Mary’s school and I enjoy being here because this is a good school
where I can learn. We have our own Football Academy where we go on trips to play against other
teams from different schools. It’s pretty exciting going to different towns in the Kimberly and just
hanging out with the boys. We always have a good time playing football. The men who run the
Academy are great guys and help us out a lot.
Imran Paddy
My name is Imran Paddy and I come from
Warmun (Turkey Creek). I flew from Warmun
to Broome, when I first got to the Residential
College I was very happy. I was very confident
I would make friends and I did!
Two days later I went to St. Mary’s College and everybody was friendly to me. St. Mary’s College is
fun! There are lots of subjects there. My favourite subjects are Metal Technology, Health and Phys Ed,
Religion and English. They also have the Football Academy! We get to go around the Kimberly and
Port Hedland to compete in football matches.
The Residential College is fun as well! Every body gets to go on camps and visit other schools around
the Kimberly! The food there is delicious and healthy and they also have Foxtel! We have Saturday
football matches and I play for PCYC Saints. At the moment we have won our first three games and I
hope we will win the grand finals. It was worth the hard work to win our games.
Even though I enjoy staying in Broome I do miss my family and friends and I can’t wait to see them all
on the holidays.
Busy Times for the West Kimberley Football
Academy
What an action packed term it has been for the Academy
boys. Our Monday After School Football Competition
which is open to all boys has been very successful
with over 120 boys pulling on the boots each
week. Boys travel regularly from Bidyadanga, Beagle
Bay and Derby to play. Local police officers have
been umpiring games each week. Officer in Charge of
Broome Police, Senior Sergeant Rob Neesham has
organised a few of his officers to umpire each week
which has been a great exercise in ‚positive policing‛.
The Year 8/9 boys performed well in the Smarter
Than Smoking Cup in Fitzroy Crossing and the Year
10’s also represented the Academy proudly in Port
Hedland in the AFL Sports Ready Cup. Preparations
to send a Country Week team to Perth in July are well
underway and a strong group of boys from St Marys
and Broome Senior is being assembled.
Recently many of our Academy members made their
television debut on the ABC’s Stateline. It was a very positive story about the great work that the Clontarf Foundation
is doing throughout Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Attendance figures at training have been solid and other Academy functions and reward activities have been well attended.
Some local sponsors have donated a pool table for each of the Academy rooms. Community support for the Academy
has not waivered and the generosity of the Kimberley community has been a great factor in the Academy’s success.
The boys love playing pool and a big thank you to Willie Creek Pearls, Kimberley Property Valuers, Moby Dick Marine,
Broome Pharmacy, H&M Tracey Construction and Sportspower for helping us acquire the tables.
Tony Delaney has embarked on an exciting and ambitious vegetable garden project behind the Academy rooms. It
won’t be long before they will be eating healthy, fresh produce from the garden. The boys have loved working on the
project. Many have given up time at recess and lunch to keep it moving and they have volunteered their time on
weekends.
were recently advised of their success. The AIC
gives students external recognition of their
achievements and the students receive a certificate
showing their level of achievement and a detailed
report showing how they went on each problem
compared with others in their own year and state.
There is the opportunity for students who enjoy and
do well in the AIC to participate in the Australian
Vocational Education and Training and Structured Workplace Learning
The first half of the year has seen the VET and Structured Workplace Learning program continue to grow. Our students
have the option of taking part in a number of courses offered through TAFE. Courses such as Hospitality and
Tourism, Community Services, Business, Aquaculture, Automotive and Industrial skills form the basis of the TAFE
based programs. Those students who are pursuing a particular area are taking advantage of the School Based Traineeships
being offered, this gives them the opportunity to embark on their particular career path. The TAFE courses are
all at the Certificate II level except the Industrial skills which is at a Certificate I level.
Apart from those attending TAFE, we also have a number of students who are doing their Structured Workplace
Learning in a workplace of their choice. This requires them to attend a workplace one day a week.
The courses being offered have provided St Mary’s College students with a broader range of opportunities to match
their areas of interest. They give our students work experience in real life situations in a variety of workplaces.
Throughout the remainder of the year we will continue to explore options to enhance the VET and SWL program, to
provide a greater range of work experience and training options for St Mary’s students.
Questacon Smart Moves is a travelling outreach program promoting cutting edge research, new ideas and entrepreneurship
in science, engineering and technology.
On Monday 19 th May all the secondary students attended one
hour sessions involving multimedia, interactive displays and
informative discussion. We learnt about cutting edge ideas in
Sports Science involving AFL and snow sports as well as
shark protection, robotics and inventions by young people. We
saw students trying to recreate the escape in the movie
‘Chicken Run‛ using rubber chickens rubber gloves, umbrellas
and sling shots. We also simulated computers games which
rely on body movement.
The talks encourage young people to get involved in Science
and Technology and to be creative and innovative. Most importantly
it was lots of fun and interesting.
through the School of Indigenous Studies. the course is
for one year and I am doing the Science stream to enable
me to get into the 6 week pre Medicine course that is offered
at UWA. The pre Medicine course runs over the
summer break, if I pass this course I will hopefully get a
place into first year Medicine. There are only 8 places for
Indigenous students going into Medicine from the pre
Medicine course, so I need to keep working and stay focused.
Currently I have been awarded 3 scholarships which are
with my host company being BHP Billiton Iron Ore
Port Hedland. I found out about it in the NorthWest Telegraph
mid last year and decided I would apply for it. I
applied online and in the first week of fourth term I got a
phone call about doing an aptitude test, 2 weeks later had
an interview, 2 weeks after that was a medical and about a
month later I found out iIhad been successful and that I
would be starting on 18th February this year.
In going through all those stages I had to travel to Hedland
for each one, which meant I had to travel down on a
Thursday, have my appointments then travel back to
Broome on the weekend, which I paid for, as well as being
in my final weeks of year 12. But obviously it all paid off,
was worth all the effort, and I'm happily getting through
my certificates and work, enjoying it and learning heaps!
I work with a program called GSAP, apparently it's a very
complex program to work with, but I work through it with
ease. Five other girls are doing the same traineeship as I
am, half indigenous and half non indigenous. I think it's a
really good traineeship to be doing and Apprenticeships
Australia is a good employer.
