Busy Times for the West Kimberley Football Academy What an action packed term it has been for the Academy boys. Our Monday After School Football Competition which is open to all boys has been very successful with over 120 boys pulling on the boots each week. Boys travel regularly from Bidyadanga, Beagle Bay and Derby to play. Local police officers have been umpiring games each week. Officer in Charge of Broome Police, Senior Sergeant Rob Neesham has organised a few of his officers to umpire each week which has been a great exercise in ‚positive policing‛. The Year 8/9 boys performed well in the Smarter Than Smoking Cup in Fitzroy Crossing and the Year 10’s also represented the Academy proudly in Port Hedland in the AFL Sports Ready Cup. Preparations to send a Country Week team to Perth in July are well underway and a strong group of boys from St Marys and Broome Senior is being assembled. Recently many of our Academy members made their television debut on the ABC’s Stateline. It was a very positive story about the great work that the Clontarf Foundation is doing throughout Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Attendance figures at training have been solid and other Academy functions and reward activities have been well attended. Some local sponsors have donated a pool table for each of the Academy rooms. Community support for the Academy has not waivered and the generosity of the Kimberley community has been a great factor in the Academy’s success. The boys love playing pool and a big thank you to Willie Creek Pearls, Kimberley Property Valuers, Moby Dick Marine, Broome Pharmacy, H&M Tracey Construction and Sportspower for helping us acquire the tables. Tony Delaney has embarked on an exciting and ambitious vegetable garden project behind the Academy rooms. It won’t be long before they will be eating healthy, fresh produce from the garden. The boys have loved working on the project. Many have given up time at recess and lunch to keep it moving and they have volunteered their time on weekends. Academy boys with the Barni they caught. Student achievement Year 7 Students Achieve in Australian Informatics Competition. Two Year 7 students achieved outstanding results in a recent computer science competition open to all secondary school students from Years 7 – 12 in Australia, the competition is run by the Australian Mathematics Trust. Elijah Martin and Emma Rowe sat the Junior level paper for students in years 7 and 8 on 2 nd May, and were recently advised of their success. The AIC gives students external recognition of their achievements and the students receive a certificate showing their level of achievement and a detailed report showing how they went on each problem compared with others in their own year and state. There is the opportunity for students who enjoy and do well in the AIC to participate in the Australian Informatics Olympaid in September 2008. Congratulations Elijah and Emma! Elijah and Emma with Head of Primary School Ms Angela Alibrando Vocational Education and Training and Structured Workplace Learning The first half of the year has seen the VET and Structured Workplace Learning program continue to grow. Our students have the option of taking part in a number of courses offered through TAFE. Courses such as Hospitality and Tourism, Community Services, Business, Aquaculture, Automotive and Industrial skills form the basis of the TAFE based programs. Those students who are pursuing a particular area are taking advantage of the School Based Traineeships being offered, this gives them the opportunity to embark on their particular career path. The TAFE courses are all at the Certificate II level except the Industrial skills which is at a Certificate I level. Apart from those attending TAFE, we also have a number of students who are doing their Structured Workplace Learning in a workplace of their choice. This requires them to attend a workplace one day a week. The courses being offered have provided St Mary’s College students with a broader range of opportunities to match their areas of interest. They give our students work experience in real life situations in a variety of workplaces. Throughout the remainder of the year we will continue to explore options to enhance the VET and SWL program, to provide a greater range of work experience and training options for St Mary’s students.
