ST MARY’S COLLEGE LIBRARIES ... FUN IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL LIBRARY The Library is always a very busy place. Each day children come and discover how much fun reading can be. They hear about new and exciting books each week and many reserve books regularly. There is always just the right book for everyone, and we search until we find it. Most of the children know how to search the Library catalogue on the computers. At lunchtime the Library is a popular place to be. Some children are on computers, some play chess, some play board games, some read on the cushions and some use the Smart Board to play Library games and others colour in or find fun on the activity table. The children are always willing to help tidy up, clean and put books away. Early in the year we had Andy Wright, a storyteller who de- lighted the children with his stories of growing up. He impressed everyone with his vitality and enthusiasm and he inspired many children to go away and write their own story. Book Week 2008 is in week 5 of Term 3, the theme this year is “Fuel Your Mind”. We have a display of the shortlisted books for the Australian Children’s Book of the Year competition and we are reading one book each week. We enjoy trying to predict the gold medal winners. We have already booked our times with guest author Elise Hurst who will be at the Public Library during Book Week. Our Library is a place for fun and learning where students can enjoy both the old and new technologies. Whether they are reading a book, listending to a story, using the Smart Board, or researching on a computer, the students are acquiring skills that will last a lifetime. Di Leitch, Librarian.
SENIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY, YEARS 8 TO 12. Miss Tristan has been talking to classes about the shortlisted books for the Children’s Book Council, Book of the Year Awards to be anniounced in August. Students have been encouraged to borrow and read the shortlisted books, and predict which books might be the winners. AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S BOOK COUNCIL, BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS, 2008. Students utitlize the Homework Centre in the Senior Library after school each day. Year 11 and 12 students have access to Notre Dame Library for weekend study. Study centre.
