AGCAS Vocational Course Survey of Postgraduate Courses in
Events, Conference and Hospitality Management 2002/2003
Introduction
This survey was completed in June 2003 and refers to courses available in 2002/2003. The
information was obtained from course directors and their co-operation is gratefully acknowledged.
The survey reflects the information they provided. It is intended to be a representative sample of
the range of courses available, rather than offering comprehensive coverage of all courses in this
field. The survey is available in both hard copy and web versions: the printed version is a summary
of the more comprehensive information available at http://www.prospects.ac.uk/links/vcsc
Scope of Survey
The courses surveyed offer conversion routes to qualifications in this sector. Courses were chosen
to cover the more specific areas of conference and events management, though the majority of
courses focus on hospitality generally. Courses with a European or international focus were
included. Most of the courses surveyed offered a part-time study option.

Selection Criteria
No particular degree subject is required, although some institutions prefer a related degree.
Generally a class of 2.2 or above is required. Relevant experience and an interest in the sector are
preferable. Only a few institutions accept HNDs, if accompanied by relevant work experience.
Funding
Most students are self-funded or take out Career Development Loans. A small number found
funding through the European Social Fund and employer sponsorship.

Employment Prospects
Students completing the courses gained employment in hotel management, restaurant
management, conference organisation, personnel management. 75 - 100% of students were in
employment 6 months after completion.
