DOUG COBURN<br />

After a 16-year career as an executive in a<br />

third generation family insurance brokerage,<br />

Doug Coburn decided he needed a change in<br />

his life. His partner started a spa in Doug’s<br />

family homestead property, called “The Little<br />

House Spa”. Quickly Doug witnessed the<br />

powers of spa and the healthy benefits it<br />

bestowed on all who walked through those doors. He began to see<br />

a window of discovery into another world and so he went back to<br />

school. In 2001, Doug graduated from the Ottawa Academy of Beauty<br />

and Aesthetics in Ottawa, Ontario. In addition, he completed an<br />

eight-month study of reflexology, and passed with honours under<br />

the office of the Reflexology Association of Canada. He went on<br />

to <strong>Toronto</strong>, where he was taken to a new level of therapeutic foot<br />

care studies, and then to Montréal, where he studied skin in greater<br />

detail under the wing of his teacher and mentor, Carole O’Toole.<br />

In 2004, along with his business partner Daniel Francoeur, Doug<br />

placed every effort possible into the rebirth of Bodé Spa for Men.<br />

Now six years after the Bodé project and its emphasis on the care<br />

of men, a door opened to take Doug to the next stage of his career,<br />

which is continuing education, teaching and consulting. Douglas<br />

is a master waxing instructor and public speaker. He also has a<br />

small acting career – so you might see him outside the spa!<br />

Daniel Francœur started in the spa business<br />

over 12 years ago with the opening of a traditional<br />

female destination day spa called Little<br />

House Spa. Over the years, the male clientele<br />

a new venture, Bodé Spa for Men. Bode Spa<br />

for Men is now in its sixth year of business<br />

and still growing. Daniel’s background is not just the owner; he is<br />

also a massage therapist (orthotherapist), waxing specialist (trainer)<br />

Daniel uses his experience both from a typical spa setting as well<br />

differently when it comes to a facial treatment? What are the main<br />

issues men are worried about with regards to their skin and appearance?<br />

Why is it as skin care professionals we treat men’s skin<br />

care so differently than the female counterpart? Do they not suffer<br />

from the exact same skin issues? Why then do most spas only offer<br />

1 or 2 types of facials for men? In this first of a two part seminar,<br />

we will go through a man’s facial from meet and greet, questions to<br />

ask him, facial techniques just for him, and how to sell product to<br />

Upon turning a certain age and finally having facial hair, guys were<br />

welcomed into that special club... the guys’ shaving club... Was there<br />

anyone there to teach us? No way! Usually, our dad or big brother<br />

gave us a razor, some shaving cream and said go for it. Upon seeing<br />

us once we finished, with all the cuts and razor burn, we received a<br />

slap on the back and the words “Welcome to manhood”. And guess<br />

what: we have been shaving the same way since we were 13. We<br />

need help! Part two of this seminar is all about shaving. Since the<br />

area a man shaves is about half of his face, don’t you think as skin<br />

care professionals we should include, alter, discuss, deal with shaving<br />

issues in our facial treatments? How do you care for razor burn,<br />

ingrown hairs... Simply put: is your client shaving properly? Men<br />

need to be educated, and you are face care professionals right? This<br />

will not only change how you do facials, but open another door for<br />

A little about Doug<br />

After a 16-year career as an executive in a third generation family insurance brokerage, Doug<br />

Coburn decided he needed a change in his life. In 2001, Doug graduated from the Ottawa Academy<br />

of Beauty and Aesthetics in Ottawa, Ontario. In addition, he completed an eight month study of<br />

reflexology, and passed with honours under the office of the Reflexology Association of Canada.<br />

He went on to <strong>Toronto</strong>, where he was taken to a new level of therapeutic foot care studies, and then<br />

to Montréal, where he studied skin in greater detail under the wing of his teacher and mentor, Carole O’Toole. In<br />

2004, along with his business partner Daniel Francœur, Doug placed every effort possible into the re-birth of Bode<br />

Spa for Men. Now six years after the Bode project and its emphasis on the care of men, a door opened to take Doug<br />

to the next stage of his career, which is continuing education, teaching and consulting.<br />
