What has happened... GARDEN SAFARI – SATURDAY 11 TH JUNE During the days leading up to this event there was some pretty intensive gardening taking place by those who had volunteered to take part but it really did pay off. Saturday dawned bright and sunny, just as the forecast said it would, and final preparations were put in place. Helium balloons were secured to every garden involved but there were several loud bangs as some of these popped – we might settle for a jolly flag or two next time – and polite notices advising people “To please mind the steps” were placed at strategic points. Then the cake and plant stalls were prepared, gates were thrown open and the Safari was launched. From that moment the afternoon glided gently on with visitors able to wander between gardens, buy a plant or a cake and then enjoy a delicious cream tea served so nicely by our cheerful volunteers. As one of our visitors put it “I cannot think of a nicer way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon” and we raised £250 for the Cathedral. THE ANNUAL BOAT TRIP – TUESDAY 5 TH JULY I think we will all agree that the weather has not been particularly like the summers of old but nevertheless 87 stalwart souls cheerfully boarded The Enterprise Boat for the Friends’ annual trip down the Fal on the evening of Tuesday 5 th July. It was dry and reasonably bright but by no means balmy but that did not dampen the spirits one jot. We were delighted to see Mr and Mrs. Attree and their dog Millie once again and who as visitors from Kent were definitely are most distant guests. The Music COFFEE MORNINGS IN THE PEARSON ROOM (Wednesdays 10 – 11.30am) department was well represented with Chris Gray, Luke Bond, the Scholars and the Organ Scholar-in-waiting. Then there was the Pirates’ Bounty Raffle which made the staggering amount of £100 – a big thank you to everyone for their support. When the pasties came on at Falmouth they were piping hot and very tasty. These were consumed whilst we chugged across to St Mawes where we were able to disembark for three quarters of an hour. This time was well spent in a variety of ways: at The Victoria Inn, enjoying an ice cream, strolling along the sea front with a container of chips – what more did we need? Then all aboard for the journey home and that wonderful view of our Cathedral as we approached the City – what other Cathedral can boast such a perfect picture? We have already been asked to do the boat trip again next year so if you missed this one be sure to sign up next time. Last, but not least, a very big thank you to Peter Hewson for arranging the trip and the pasties. Maybe next year he might do a tiny bit better with the weather?! Treats in store... The tasting will be followed by a three course buffet supper accompanied, of course, by the wines we have tasted. This event is limited to 25 max and the cost for the evening will be £20 per ticket to include the wine and the buffet supper. At present the office is open every Wednesday 10am – 12noon and is in the annexe opposite the entrance to the Cathedral car park – through the blue door. So please pop in to join the Friends, pay your subscription, buy tickets and find out about the social events which the Friends organise. THANK YOU The Friends have had a busy season recently and all our events are beautifully advertised with the posters on our board and then there are the accompanying tickets all themed and matching. We are very grateful to Mr Tony Northcott who happily produces these for us, coping with all our demands, bright or not so bright ideas and sudden panic requests for extra copies.
