Corinne Miller - drama
Gold Coast Secondary Schools Drama
Festival
Last Saturday night, 13 August, five senior
drama students travelled to St Andrew’s
Lutheran College to compete in the 39th
Annual Gold Coast Secondary Schools’
Drama Festival. Tristan Furney, Alex
Arena, Zane Moulton, Dean Kenny and
Elijah Crawford performed “Bouncers”
by John Godber.
The play is set in and around a northern
London nightclub called “Mr Cinders”,
with the action focusing on the exploits
of the four doormen and their customers.
The play creates a vivid picture of the
relentless hedonism of northern night life
with its raw energy, flashing disco lights,
and raucous lads and lasses out on the
town.
After an amazing performance that
bought the house down, the boys were
awarded “Most Outstanding Comedy
for 2011”. They also received seven
highly commended certificates for
acting, movement, dance, chorus &
ensemble work.
All of the boys should be congratulated
on an astounding, brave performance.
Thanks must also go to Liam Rasmussen
for his technical work.
Congratulations to all involved, it
certainly was a show to remember!
Readers are leaders
Andrew Stark - head of libraries
Those of you who follow this column regularly might remember that August is a busy month for readers. During this month, Book Week
will give a national focus to reading and schools around Australia (and in some of our international neighbourhoods) will be celebrating
the joy and benefits of reading. Officially, Book Week, the longest running children’s festival in Australia (it’s in its 66th year!) is a weeklong
celebration that begins on August 20. During the week, we do not simply focus on the CBCA short-listed books, but celebrate all
forms of Australian literature produced by our highly regarded authors and illustrators.
During the boys’ reading lessons, they have been introduced to a variety of Australian
(and international) authors and illustrators and many boys have taken up the challenge
of reading through the CBCA short-listed books. The CBCA finalists were announced
earlier this year and this Friday, August 19, the winners in each category will be declared.
While this is an exciting time for young readers around Australia, it is even more
exhilarating for those authors and illustrators who have made the final cut in one of the
world’s most highly regarded literary competitions for young readers.
Recently, library staff began organising four different collections of fiction and non-fiction
with the intention of placing a small library of works in each of the senior school boarding
houses. Each ‘Boarders’ Library’ will be the domain of each boarding house and selected
boys will be responsible for maintaining the collection and suggesting acquisitions to
extend it. Each collection will consist of a combination of brand new and second-hand
books, and, never fear, each House will have its fair share of ‘Harry Potter’, Matthew
Reilly and Robert Muchamore! A similar library will be set up in Rogers House for Prep
boarders.
It is envisaged that each Boarders’ Library will be up and running for the beginning of
Term Four and boarding boys are very welcome to add their own books from home to the
collection. There will be no official ‘borrowing’ of the books; all the books are available at
any time (and there is now no excuse for nothing to do during prep!)
Happy reading!
Swimming
SmartPrint OSA Race Day
New Zealand Short Course Swimming
Championships Wellington 6-8 August
Alex Press currently in year 11 Surman
House represented Queensland
Swimming at the recent NZ Swimming
Championships. Alex earned this
representation following a very
successful Australian National Age
Championships during April when
he won gold in the boys 15 years 50m
freestyle narrowly missing the Australia
age record. Whilst Alex is still an age
group swimmer the strength of his
performances during 2011 has gained
him this senior representation for
Queensland.
Alex competed in the boys 16 year age
group wining two gold, one silver and
one bronze medal. His performance
in the 50m butterfly equalled the
Queensland 16 year old State record.
Alex’s full results were as follows
Boys 50m Butterfly 1st 24.77
Boys 50m Freestyle 1st 22.82
Boys 100m butterfly 2nd 55.94
Glenn Ng - director of gymnastics
Congratulations to all TSS boys who performed admirably at the GPS Round Three lead up competition
against Gregory Terrace. As the first official GPS competition, TSS did reasonably well, producing
respectable scores and defeating GT on the day, winning all three Divisions convincingly. However, the
competition has also shown many of our weaknesses, including what we can improve and we are looking
forward to producing better team scores next week. Competition highlights consist of all Division One
members gaining a top three placing, Christian Ben-Kats of Division Two obtaining first place overall and
on five of the six apparatus, but best performance of the day goes to Daniel Christopher in Division Three
coming 1 st overall, winning all six apparatus. Good luck next week when we compete against BBC!
Pictured Left: Gymnast of the week Daniel Christopher
Cattle Club
Ross Wilson - mic cattle club
The boys travelled to Brisbane on the 6th August for what was going to be a very busy week at the Ekka. A larger team of boys competed
across a range of events including the judging of the School’s steers in their respective weight classes, the Braford Heifers in their
respective classes, school junior paraders and team/individual judging. In what proved to be very tough competition the boys were
successful in picking up several red ribbons, just missing out on first place.
Congratulations must go to Sam Greenup for being runner up in the senior section of the young paraders competition where competitors
are judged on their ability to control an animal in the ring, and present it to the judge in the best possible condition. Sam faced a very
tough test by competing in one of six individual heats (ie 120 young paraders age 16-19) and going on to the final where he unfortunately
missed out to the eventual winner. Congratulations to David Burey and Jacob Segeren for their professional presentation and preparation
of “Celeste” and “Saadi” for judging. Saadi unfortunately missed out but Celeste paraded by David picked up a well earned second place
against the eventual winner of Senior Braford female.
The boys didn’t have quite the success in judging this year but
would have benefited from the experience. It was pleasing to
see a very competitive group of steers being presented by the
boys. Against stiff competition, they more than adequately held
their own against very established producers of steers who do it
for a living. Having received the carcase results recently, it was
tremendous to see that the group managed successfully to prepare
and finish the steers and closely match the market specifications
for each animal.
One of the pleasing aspects of the show was to see the enthusiasm
of the team members in helping out other producers and in
particular “Milhaven” Stud. Mr and Mrs Wieland have been very
kind supporters and mentors of the boys and assisted them as they
have gone around the different shows this year. Congratulations to
BJ who picked up a second place with one of the Studs Red Angus
bulls and further success was achieved in the Shorthorn arena.
Well Done BJ.
Overall, a very successful show was had with much to look forward to next year. There are a number of people boys and myself would
like to thank for helping them throughout the year. In no particular order, sincere thanks to the Walton, Segeren, Ussher, Wieland and
Lahey families for all their assistance throughout the year. A special mention to the TSS staff who gave up their time to assist with the
different shows, the kitchen staff for the great food, and most importantly the Kleinschmidt family at Maudsland for kindly allowing us to
agist our cattle on their property.
Urgent request to osa members
Mike Halpin - vet coordinator
TSS hopes to conduct the 2011 OSA Careers Mentor Day on Monday 5 September from 1-30pm to 3-30pm. The idea is for Old Boys
to talk to current boys about their journeys to their present careers, with handy hints, some sage advice and perhaps a few stories of what
worked and what didn’t along the way. The Year 10 boys are about to choose their senior subjects, to be studied in the next years, while
the Year 12s are about to choose their tertiary options for next year. These are challenging times and any help in this decision-making
process would be greatly appreciated.
We need representatives of every industry, every trade, every profession…. a lofty goal!
Please consider this request and if interested in helping, then please call Mike Halpin in the VET Office on 5531 9896 or email
mike.halpin@tss.qld.edu.au
Mobile Learning - a moveable feast
Richard Jones - e-learning coordinator
With the increasing affordability of mobile wireless and 3G devices many schools are considering how these can best be utilised for
learning – are they suitable for use in the classroom or should they be banned outright, is one level of current debate.
At TSS our feeling is that while they can be a distraction to students, they do also provide instant access to the universe of information
that is the internet. In addition many of the smarter devices, such as Apple’s iPad, iPod and iPhone come with a full suite of apps for rich
content creation, email, calendar, note taking, eBook reading, location-based services, audio/video capture and so on – in fact there seems
to be an app for everything.
Our IT department is busy making sure that the provision of the infrastructure needed to make mobile devices work is progressing as
rapidly as possible. On the eLearning front we are now focussing more on capabilities than specifics (eg Word Processing rather than
Microsoft Word, Video Editing rather than iMovie) so that we can specify what each device that a student chooses to use has the features
that the teachers need to incorporate them into their lessons.
This is a work in progress and it is impossible at present to allow just any device to connect to our network. However, we are aware that
in today’s world one size fits none.
You can reach me at the school on 5531 9851 or email me at richard.jones@tss.qld.edu.au.
Please also see our eLearning blog http://moodle.tss.qld.edu.au/moodle/course/view.php?id=27. While parents cannot make comments
on the blog I would be glad to include your views on this and other topics.
QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILDREN INC.
GOLD COAST BRANCH
The QAGTC Gold Coast Branch organises a range of Saturday afternoon workshops for gifted
children throughout the school terms. A parent support group usually runs in conjunction with
the workshops, sometimes featuring an invited guest speaker. The group aims to provide a regular forum where
parents can obtain information, support and advice on raising, motivating and advocating for gifted children, and
where they can also make friends and contacts within the QAGTC community, specifically on the Gold Coast.
Particularly if you’ve recently discovered that your child has been identified as gifted and you’re wondering what it
all means, it can be helpful to compare notes with others who are experiencing the same challenges in supporting
their children, in working with the school systems (or perhaps even homeschooling), and in dealing with a young
person whose behaviour and academic performance may not always fall within normal expectations. Discussing your
child’s education and development with others in a similar position sometimes helps to put things in perspective.
And it can be reassuring to meet parents who have been where you are now, but whose gifted kids have actually
“turned out ok”.
August Parent Support Group Meeting
Informal Discussion with Carol Barnes on Gifted Children with Learning Disabilities (GLD)
and other Possible Causes of Academic Underachievement
Carol will have just returned from speaking on GLD at two international conferences in Seattle and Prague.
She will do a mini-introduction to GLD, and then talk a bit about the latest research from overseas about
these gifted yet counter-intuitive learners.
There will be lots of time for discussion and questions. The seminar will be useful for parents and teachers
of gifted children at both the primary and secondary levels. Community members are also welcome to
attend. Tea and coffee will be in plentiful supply, as will access to general information on gifted resources
and contacts.
How do Optical Illusions work? We identify most things by
sight, this means that a lot of information that our brain
processes and stores is in the form of visual images.
But how do our brain and eyes work together to create
these images? What happens if our eyes trick our brain
or vice versa? Can we train the visual cortex in the brain
to master optical illusions? Why do things appear where
they shouldn't and why do colours change and move? How
are optical illusions made? Why do we love puzzles? They are
for fun but also have common themes that underpin the patterns
that help us develop our logical, mathematical, visual and lateral thinking. A variety of investigations will
be explored in an exciting, visual, active and fun environment to discover and discern some spectacular puzzles and optical
illusions-and their effects on our amazing brains.
