QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILDREN INC. GOLD COAST BRANCH The QAGTC Gold Coast Branch organises a range of Saturday afternoon workshops for gifted children throughout the school terms. A parent support group usually runs in conjunction with the workshops, sometimes featuring an invited guest speaker. The group aims to provide a regular forum where parents can obtain information, support and advice on raising, motivating and advocating for gifted children, and where they can also make friends and contacts within the QAGTC community, specifically on the Gold Coast. Particularly if you’ve recently discovered that your child has been identified as gifted and you’re wondering what it all means, it can be helpful to compare notes with others who are experiencing the same challenges in supporting their children, in working with the school systems (or perhaps even homeschooling), and in dealing with a young person whose behaviour and academic performance may not always fall within normal expectations. Discussing your child’s education and development with others in a similar position sometimes helps to put things in perspective. And it can be reassuring to meet parents who have been where you are now, but whose gifted kids have actually “turned out ok”. August Parent Support Group Meeting Informal Discussion with Carol Barnes on Gifted Children with Learning Disabilities (GLD) and other Possible Causes of Academic Underachievement Carol will have just returned from speaking on GLD at two international conferences in Seattle and Prague. She will do a mini-introduction to GLD, and then talk a bit about the latest research from overseas about these gifted yet counter-intuitive learners. There will be lots of time for discussion and questions. The seminar will be useful for parents and teachers of gifted children at both the primary and secondary levels. Community members are also welcome to attend. Tea and coffee will be in plentiful supply, as will access to general information on gifted resources and contacts. Date: Saturday, 27 Aug 2011 Time: Venue: Cost: 2:00 – 4:00 pm (please arrive at 1:45pm for registration) Queensland Academy for Health Sciences (QAHS), Edmund Rice Dr, Southport Free (gold coin donation appreciated to cover catering costs) For catering purposes bookings are essential, as places are limited. Children not participating in workshops during the meeting remain their parents’ responsibility. QAGTC has no child-minding facilities and can assume no responsibility for unsupervised children. QAGTC is a not-for-profit member-funded volunteer-based association relying on public support to support gifted children, their families and teachers.
