music notes Rob Cooke - director of music Eisteddfod success Congratulations to the Grainger concert band (Year 7-9 musicians) who have just received third place in their section. These promising young musicians did so with 10 out of 30 musicians missing due to illness and camps. Well done boys! Music permission slips Permission slips have been sent out via email for upcoming eisteddfod performances. Could all parents please make sure these slips are returned as soon as possible so we can process them in time for the performances. Gala Music Concert Congratulations to all the musicians who performed in the annual Gala Concert last week. It was a fantastic concert that showcased the wonderful talent we have at TSS. We now look forward to the performances at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod next week. Calling all Composers! The Australian Society of Music Educators organise an annual composition competition that supports up and coming young composers. Music can be written in a variety of styles and the finalists will have the opportunity to hear their works being performed. Swimming SmartPrint OSA Race Day New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships Wellington 6-8 August Alex Press currently in year 11 Surman House represented Queensland Swimming at the recent NZ Swimming Championships. Alex earned this representation following a very successful Australian National Age Championships during April when he won gold in the boys 15 years 50m freestyle narrowly missing the Australia age record. Whilst Alex is still an age group swimmer the strength of his performances during 2011 has gained him this senior representation for Queensland. Alex competed in the boys 16 year age group wining two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. His performance in the 50m butterfly equalled the Queensland 16 year old State record. Alex’s full results were as follows Boys 50m Butterfly 1st 24.77 Boys 50m Freestyle 1st 22.82 Boys 100m butterfly 2nd 55.94 Boys 100m Freestyle 3rd 51.60 Parents and Friends of TSS Community are invited to attend the SmartPrint OSA Race day, to be held on Saturday 1 October at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Kris Hailey - osa cooordinator This event was well supported last year with all profits raised going towards OSA bursary funds. These bursary funds allow the OSA to support parents who require assistance in keeping their boys at TSS. The SmartPrint Race Day is the only fundraising event organised by the OSA each year. Come along and enjoy a great day of camaraderie and be in the draw to win some great prizes. For bookings, please contact the OSA Office on (07) 5531 9803 or complete the form on the attached flyer and return it to the OSA Office, The Southport School, Clocktower Building, Winchester Street, Southport. Mothers Rowing and Ergo Fitness Classes James Stewart - junior rowing coordinator Mums, if you’re interested in learning to row or joining a crew, morning trainings are available. Times begin from 8:30am through to lunch each morning and cost is $20 per session/ per rower. For the first time ever we will be conducting Ergo Fitness sessions on the beautiful TSS rowing deck over looking the water. (Think spin classes at the gym with music but this time you’re on an ergo!!) No experience necessary. Cost is $15 and classes can run each morning at 8:30am depending on numbers interested. If you are interested in either of these please email james.stewart@tss.qld.edu.au and outline what sessions, times and days would be suitable. Round up some friends and come and have some fun and get fit at the same time!!
