Urgent request to osa members Mike Halpin - vet coordinator TSS hopes to conduct the 2011 OSA Careers Mentor Day on Monday 5 September from 1-30pm to 3-30pm. The idea is for Old Boys to talk to current boys about their journeys to their present careers, with handy hints, some sage advice and perhaps a few stories of what worked and what didn’t along the way. The Year 10 boys are about to choose their senior subjects, to be studied in the next years, while the Year 12s are about to choose their tertiary options for next year. These are challenging times and any help in this decision-making process would be greatly appreciated. We need representatives of every industry, every trade, every profession…. a lofty goal! Please consider this request and if interested in helping, then please call Mike Halpin in the VET Office on 5531 9896 or email mike.halpin@tss.qld.edu.au Mobile Learning - a moveable feast Richard Jones - e-learning coordinator With the increasing affordability of mobile wireless and 3G devices many schools are considering how these can best be utilised for learning – are they suitable for use in the classroom or should they be banned outright, is one level of current debate. At TSS our feeling is that while they can be a distraction to students, they do also provide instant access to the universe of information that is the internet. In addition many of the smarter devices, such as Apple’s iPad, iPod and iPhone come with a full suite of apps for rich content creation, email, calendar, note taking, eBook reading, location-based services, audio/video capture and so on – in fact there seems to be an app for everything. Our IT department is busy making sure that the provision of the infrastructure needed to make mobile devices work is progressing as rapidly as possible. On the eLearning front we are now focussing more on capabilities than specifics (eg Word Processing rather than Microsoft Word, Video Editing rather than iMovie) so that we can specify what each device that a student chooses to use has the features that the teachers need to incorporate them into their lessons. This is a work in progress and it is impossible at present to allow just any device to connect to our network. However, we are aware that in today’s world one size fits none. Tennis Terry Saunders - director of tennis TSS first IV Regional Championships Congratulations go to the TSS First IV Team in becoming the 2011 Regional Champions in the Queensland Secondary School Teams Competition. Our Team, consisting of Joseph Gersbach, Alec McKenzie, Caleb Brown, Riki Beazley and Jock Campbell, after receiving a first round bye, comfortably defeated Somerset in the quarter-finals. They then defeated Helensvale State High School five matches to three matches in the semi-finals. In a match of high quality tennis, of which our School and the boys, can be rightly very proud, TSS defeated Coombabah State High School five matches to three in the finals. Our Team will now contest the state Finals in Rockhampton in mid-September. We wish them every success. TSS School Championships Congratulations go to all students who recently competed in the Year 8 and Year 9 School Championships. In the Year 8 Championships, Fraser Quirk defeated Kaya Genc in the Finals. While in the Year 9 Championships, Ishvar Nedunchezhian defeated Bradley Dicks. The Year 10, Year 11 and Open School Championships will be contested during the September School holidays. GPS Tennis Season The 2011 GPS Tennis Season commences this Saturday 20 August against Nudgee College. Our Open and Year 11 teams travel away, whilst our Year 8 and Year 9 teams play at Miami Veterans Tennis Centre and the Year 10 team play at our TSS Senior Courts. ALL STUDENTS please check the Sports Organisation web for travel, departure and return schedules. Also check the TSS Sports Tennis website and noticeboard for all team selection. vibe event FREE TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR THE NEXT VIBE EVENT when you see a Vibe Staff member at your school, around town or a student in your school ask if they have some tickets.
