Pierre Audi.
unorthodox tempi and beautiful ornamentation make this evening
a musical treat».
Bachs integrale kerstoratorium. Daarnaast hernemen
Beyond baroque!
It looks like 2014 will be a vintage year
for B’Rock. Over the last few weeks
and months we have shared prestigious
platforms in Belgium and abroad
with high-profile conductors, soloists
and directors. From the Holland
Festival to the Wiener Festwochen,
from René Jacobs to Jérémie Rhorer,
from Romeo Castellucci to Pierre
Audi. And the press were very
keen too. In March 2014, the highly
reputable Financial Times wrote
of the production of Arthur: «The
orchestra’s precision, lush sound,
unorthodox tempi and beautiful
ornamentation make this evening
a musical treat». And De Standaard,
which attended the concert in Vienna
in May, wrote the following: «Some
enchanting sounds were produced
by the members of B’Rock in the pit.
The grating of the gates of hell, the
echoes, the consoling dance steps: the
orchestra and its delightful playing
combined sorrow and despair into
a single, very beautiful whole.»
And that makes us proud!
But that is not all. There is
also plenty to look forward to
in the 2014-2015 season ahead. In
December, we shall be touring with
Rias Kammerchor and under the
baton of René Jacobs, presenting
performances of Bach’s complete
Christmas oratorio. In addition, we
are reviving the acclaimed musicaltheatre
production Arthur, recording
Handel’s Messiah on DVD and linking
the chaos of Rebel’s Les Élements to
Arvo Pärt’s Tabula Rasa. And Mozart
will of course be making an appearance
too.
What challenges and discoveries
does the prevailing music scene have
ENG
in store for a baroque orchestra? In
May 2015 B’Rock will be devoting a
festival at Flagey in Brussels to this
question. Together with such musical
guests as BL!NDMAN and Uri Caine,
we shall be exploring the fascinating
contemporary music, and historical
and contemporary performance
practices. Beyond baroque!
«I am going to paint in a fashion
that is in no way reminiscent of
painting», Narcisse Tordoir once
said, thereby putting himself beyond
the bounds of the medium, but at the
same time remaining an extension of
it. It is this quote that led to the design
for the cover and pictures inside this
brochure. The works by Narcisse
Tordoir, one of the most influential
Belgian artists, depict in an odd sort
of way our quest for the how, what
and why of baroque music in the
present day.
The cover image, The Pink Spy 3
(2013), refers to a work by the 18thcentury
Venetian artist Giambattista
Tiepolo. Two children look around
them, bewildered. It is not clear
what has just happened and what
is going to happen. The scene just
outside the picture that draws their
attention remains a riddle. Tiepolo’s
famous clouds here take the form
of white plastic. Combined with
wilted plants, rubble and a marble
dog, the whole thing has a mysterious
air. This outsized work seems at
first sight to be photographic. But
something is not right. A painting
by Narcisse Tordoir does not necessarily
involve oil paint; as he says,
«a painting can be anything».
de trompet en het orgel. Telemanns Trompetconcerto Nr. 1
or The Power of Music.
verloren ging. Met een eigen arrangement blaast de virtuoze
Russische barokviolist Dmitry Sinkovsky de originele solopartij
nieuw leven in.
aller tijden is aangebroken. Bachs Weihnachtsoratorium
strijkers.
Bachs Concerto in A. Solistische bravoure maakt
hedendaagse uitvoeringspraktijk.
In 2015 verbindt
ORGAN SPLENDOUR—At St Peter’s
Church in Oostkamp, B’Rock pays
tribute to two indispensable instruments
of the baroque orchestra: the
trumpet and the organ. Telemann’s
Trumpet Concerto No. 1 is a real
challenge for the player of the
natural trumpet, who has to play
with a warm tone and formidable
virtuosity. David Van Bouwel plays
the superb Van Eynde organ in
a pictorial Battaglia by Kerll and
organ concertos by Corrette and
Handel. As the inventor of the latter
genre, Handel later summoned
up echoes of his organ concerti in
several concerti grossi from his
masterly Opus 6; B’Rock will be
performing No. 10. In the fine Sonata
Prima by the Italian composer
Viviani, trumpet and organ appear
in the spotlight together.
P—12
THE POWER OF MUSIC— Despite
the symbolic role it played in early
opera, for a long time the harp
remained quite an uncommon
instrument in 18th-century orchestral
composition. So it is quite
remarkable that Handel should have
written several works for it. B’Rock
will be playing two of them in this
programme: the renowned sinfonia
from Saul and the harp concerto,
as gracious as it is virtuoso, that was
heard at the first performance of
Alexander’s Feast or The Power of
Music in 1736. The concerto grosso
of the same name for oboes, strings
and continuo was also performed
between the movements of this
latter oratorio. For a revival of
Alexander’s Feast in 1739, Handel
wrote an organ concerto that he
was later to arrange as one of the
concerti grossi for strings and
continuo from his legendary Opus 6.
Two melancholy concerti with a
leading part for the oboe complete
this sample of Handel’s orchestral
mastery.
P—14
ARTHUR— The semi-opera King
Arthur by Henry Purcell unites
theatre, dance and opera as a tribute
to love and country. The original
libretto by the English poet John
Dryden tells the story of the quest
of the Breton king Arthur to free his
fiancé from the clutches of his sworn
enemy, the Saxon king Oswald. The
Flemish novelist and poet Peter
Verhelst modernised this fiery war
legend. Together with director Paul
Koek, he rewrote the libretto and
breathed new life into the intrigue.
The background rumbles with
the horror of the First World War:
Arthur is not roaming the English
forests but the Flemish fields.
P—16
THE VIRTUOSO 1720s — In the 1720s
Bach and several of his contemporaries
together wrote an everlasting
repertoire of orchestral music full
of virtuoso fireworks and sonorous
expressiveness. Bach’s Harpsichord
Concerto BWV 1052 bears the traces
P—37
2014—2015
of an earlier violin version that has
unfortunately been lost. In his own
arrangement, the virtuoso Russian
baroque violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky
breathes new life into the original
solo part. Both in this work and in
Bach’s Concerto BWV 1043 for two
violins and ensemble, the soloist(s)
and orchestra are so tightly knit
that they become equal partners
in a dialogue that is alternately
sparkling and sensitive. In addition
to the strings, the wind instruments
also have more than one moment of
glory in this concert. They embellish
the refined dances from Bach’s
first orchestral suite with a suitably
magnificent display of colour
and they shine in musical gems by
Zelenka and Pisendel.
P—18
MESSIAH— Since its first performance
in Dublin on 13th April 1742, Handel’s
Messiah has been one of the indisputable
icons of Western music. But
do we know this oratorio as well as
we think? This work represents a
turning point in Handel’s career,
when his attention shifted permanently
from Italian opera to the
English oratorio. Charles Jennens
compiled various excerpts from
the Bible related to the Saviour,
creating a contemplative libretto
whose dramatic potential Handel
took to a climax. Each one of the
ingenious arias, multifaceted
choruses and marvellous accompagnato
recitatives demonstrates
Handel’s pictorial rendering of the
text and unfailing expressiveness.
Such human emotions as joy, sorrow,
pride, remorse, menace, fear,
sympathy, tenderness, solidarity
and gratitude all make an appearance
and in this concert are brought
to life by B’Rock and the Chor des
Bayerischen Rundfunks, directed by
the Dutch conductor Peter Dijkstra.
P—20
WEIHNACHTSORATORIUM— When
you hear the joyous words «Jauchzet,
frohlocket!», you know that it’s time
for your annual rendezvous with the
finest Christmas music of all time.
Bach’s Christmas oratorio is a cycle
of six Christmas cantatas, some of
which are rooted in works written
specially for royal birthdays. From
there, for Bach it was only a short
step to an ode to that other king:
Christ. The Christmas story is told
by an evangelist in recitatives which,
as in Bach’s passions, are alternated
with contemplative arias, choruses
and chorales. Impressive strokes on
the timpani echo around the room.
Flutes and oboes join in, followed
by jubilant trumpets and swirling
strings. What we hear is joy and
delight at the birth of Christ. B’Rock,
together with the Rias Kammerchor
and an illustrious cast of soloists,
and conducted by René Jacobs,
present a deeply-felt and expressive
performance of Bach’s masterpiece.
STABAT MATER— B’Rock is turning
the spotlight on Luigi Boccherini,
an Italian composer and cello
virtuoso who for a long time was
overshadowed by his classical fellow
composers Mozart and Haydn.
Boccherini spent most of his career
in Spain under the auspices of the
Infante Don Luis de Borbon. In
addition to an opulent repertoire
of subtle chamber music, he also
wrote several concerti that gave
a starring part to his own instrument.
The cellist Roel Dieltiens has
been a passionate advocate of this
music for many years and here he
combines the virtuoso melodiousness
of Boccherini’s Concerto in G
with C.P.E. Bach’s Concerto in A.
In the Stabat Mater that embodies
Boccherini’s musical magic, solo
bravura makes way for intimacy.
Grand gestures step aside in favour
of detail and nuance, sensual melancholy
and heartfelt lyricism. Robin
Johannsen and B’Rock will translate
into sound Mary’s lamentations at
the cross.
P—24
DER TOD JESU— The music of Georg
Philipp Telemann often receives
less attention than it deserves. His
oeuvre includes a wealth of musical
surprises, such as the 1755 Passion
oratorio Der Tod Jesu, which
effortlessly holds its own against
other compositions of the same
genre. The poetic libretto by Karl
Wilhelm Ramler zooms in on the
most emotional, and universal and
human aspects of the Passion story.
Telemann pulls out all the stops to
make Christ’s suffering palpable
in expressive arias, choruses
and chorales. By increasing the
importance of and expanding
the instrumental setting of the
recitatives, the composer moreover
made his very own mark on
the Passion repertoire. The elegiac
sonority of Telemann’s oratorio is
introduced by one of his sensitive
orchestral suites and a compelling
oboe concerto.
P—26
BEYOND BAROQUE—In his
orchestral suite Les Élements,
the French composer Jean-Féry
Rebel illustrates how earth, water,
fire and air rise up out of the
universal chaos to form a new and
harmonious order. When one hears
the hair-raisingly dissonant opening
chord of this simphonie nouvelle for
the first time, one would probably
associate Rebel more with the 20th
century than the baroque court of
the Sun King, where, encouraged
by Lully, he worked his way up into
the highest echelons of music. But
contemporary composers sometimes
mislead their listeners too.
For example, in his Collage über
B-A-C-H, Arvo Pärt swings between
baroque and modern sounds, and
his meditative Tabula Rasa double
concerto would not go amiss alongside
Rebel’s Tombeau de Mr Lully,
a subdued tribute to his mentor.
B’Rock proves how modern early
P—41
2014—2015
music can sound, and vice versa.
A surprising and exciting concert
for those out to make musical
discoveries.
P—28
TABULA RASA—What challenges
and discoveries does the present-day
musical landscape have in store for a
baroque orchestra? B’Rock devotes
a two-day festival at Flagey to this
question, under the title Tabula
Rasa. Together with such musical
guests as BL!NDMAN and Uri Caine,
the B’Rock musicians explore the
fascinating border region between
early and contemporary music and
historical and current performing
practices. B’Rock is not afraid to use
the same range of instruments to
tackle both Arvo Pärt’s meditative
Tabula Rasa concerto and the whimsical
orchestral suite Les Élemens
by the baroque composer Rebel.
And what about Alfred Schnittke
on the B’Rock repertoire? Like Pärt,
this 20th-century composer also
liked to let the past resound in his
music. His intense 1971 work Kanon
in Memoriam Igor Stravinsky gave
new substance to the age-old canon
form, which enjoyed its heyday in
the work of Bach. From Rebel to
Pärt, and from Schnittke to Bach.
By throwing convention to the winds
and giving free rein to their imagination,
the B’Rock musicians and their
musical companions demonstrate
that the story of the early music
movement is by no means over.
P—30
MOZART IN PRAGUE—The third
part of B’Rock’s notable ode to
Mozart is devoted to his triumphal
progress through Prague. Mozart
had more success in this ‘golden city’
than anywhere else, especially with
his opera buffa. It was between Le
Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni
that he composed what came to be
called the Prague Symphony. The
concentrated adagio introduction to
the first movement gives a foretaste
of the melancholy and dramatic
tone of Don Giovanni, the work that
the impresario Bondini commissioned
from Mozart during his stay
in Prague. But these shadows are
soon cast out in the brilliant Allegro,
which, with its chirruping counterpoint,
looks ahead to the overture
of Die Zauberflöte, the lyrical
Andante and the dazzling ‘presto’
finale with the buffo atmosphere
as heard in Figaro. The soprano
Sophie Karthäuser offers a suitable
response to some of the finest arias
from these operas.
P—32
IL GIARDINO D’AMORE—In Rome
during the baroque period, opera
and oratorio were in the summer
months replaced by the serenata,
a genre similar to the cantata
that rang out in the outdoor
evening air. Alessandro Scarlatti’s
serenata Venere e Adone has the
most appropriate overall title of
Il Giardino d’Amore: it is not only
the characters of Venus and Adonis
that come emphatically to life, but
P—42
2014—2015
also nature. Forests, fields, rocks
and a chorus of chirruping birds,
seemingly inspired with life, listen
to the two sweethearts as they sing
of how they miss and are reunited
with one another in Arcadian arias,
recitatives and duets. In 2015 the
Postdam Sanssouci festival will
combine music with idyllic gardens.
In addition to the divine Garden of
Love in Scarlatti’s serenata, B’Rock
will also be presenting the secular
vegetable garden in the form of
Bach’s burlesque Bauernkantate,
an eccentric work packed with folk
dances and melodies that reveals a
surprisingly light-hearted side to
this German master.
