ADAPT
An Ambulance Drug & Alcohol Program for Teenagers
SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM

ADAPT
An Ambulance Drug & Alcohol Program for Teenagers
ADAPT
An Ambulance Drug & Alcohol Program for Teenagers
The Metropolitan Ambulance Service has worked in consultation with
teachers and education providers to develop the ADAPT package as
part of its Ambulance in Schools program.
The ADAPT Program specifically focuses on safe partying for secondary
school students and aims to:
• Increase student safety awareness
• Increase student understanding of how to identify and minimise risks
while partying
• Educate students regarding what to do if a medical emergency occurs
The program can be delivered as part of a timetabled subject area for
example Health & Physical Education, SOSE or Science. Alternatively,
schools may choose for the program to become a focal point at a
particular time throughout the academic year to complement other
programs such as life skills, citizenship education, pastoral care or
student welfare programs.
The ADAPT program has been designed in line with the current
school curriculum.
THE VISIT
An integral part of this program is a visit to your school by an experienced
paramedic with medical emergency equipment. Their presentation
provides a valuable, hands-on experience for your students and includes:
• Identifying the risks associated with drug and alcohol use
• How to assess and deal with emergency situations
• When and how to call for an ambulance
• What to expect when you call for an ambulance
• Explanation & demonstration of some medical emergency
equipment used by paramedics
• Basic First Aid
• Tips on safe partying practices
• Questions from staff and students
TEACHER’S RESOURCE KIT
The teacher’s resource kit contains an outline of the paramedic
presentation, a summary of each slide used in the presentation, a
poster for the classroom, suggested activities and worksheets for
the students. These activities require reflection and recall of the
presentation content and equipment referred to by the paramedic.
This resource incorporates the key messages of safe partying and
being prepared for and dealing with a medical emergency.
It is essential that teachers read through the contents of the resource
kit thoroughly before use. This enables an accurate selection of
activities and worksheets for the student group to be made based
on their needs and abilities.
A list of additional resources, contacts and organisations is also
provided to assist with planning and delivery. Teachers are further
encouraged to access these prior to program delivery to ensure the
information is contemporary and appropriate for the student group.
COST
The ADAPT program is charged at $50 per session with a minimum
daily charge of $150. Sessions run between 45 and 60 minutes,
depending on the timetabling requirements of the school. Multiple
sessions in succession can be booked.
To enable students to receive the maximum benefits from this
program, we recommend 1 class per session (approximately 30
students). However, if larger groups are required, student numbers
must not exceed 50.
