Palm Tools
& Knives
I have been carving with Flexcut palm tools for years and my experience with them has been very
positive. They are a high quality tool. Their design, with their flat, thin shafts is a little unusual but a
trademark characteristic. They are a good size for palm tools and the handles are well
designed, compact and comfortable. The thin tool blades have no excess of metal
around the bevels, no prominent heels and they slice through the wood
without drag. They come very sharp and I have used them on an
extensive range of woods and found them to cope well.
The portable set with ten interchangeable blades with a
single handle (SK-107) is an excellent concept. They are
truly compact and I know several carvers who keep
them in their vehicle ‘s glove box so that they can
carve whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Obviously careful thought has gone into the
blade selection. They are a well balanced set
of small blade profiles. They are very good
for the starting out carver in the field of
hand held carving. With a modest
outlay they are well equipped with a
complete little set which I think
value for money wise is hard to
beat. A big plus is that a quite
extensive range of
interchangeable blades in an
impressive selection of blade
sizes and profiles are
available to enable one to
continue to build up and
extend ones carving kit.
My favourite set of fixed
handle palm tools is the
thumbnail set (FR-920)
of four boxed No.11
palm tools which are just
excellent for roughing
out, shaping and
texturing small hand
held carvings.
In the last edition of Focus I discussed the advantages
of dust extraction, over the ever popular airborne /
gravity operated option. I also compared dedicated
dust extractors to shop vac style vacuums,
and showed how borrowing the Dyson
and trying to cover up the fact that you
did, is not always the best option. Happy
spouse = happy house.
In this issue I would like to expand on
the subject, and offer some direction for
designing small workshop extraction systems.
First we need to look at current
requirements. What machines you have and
what machines you plan to add (the latter
being the one thing most people forget to
take into account). Each type of machine has a certain airflow requirement for
dust effective extraction. We touched upon this in the last issue with our graph
that illustrates the loss in suction through flexible hose. A very basic list would be:
Bandsaw
300c.f.m.
Tablesaw
400c.f.m. (cabinet connect only)
Router Table
500c.f.m.
Jointer or Small Thicknesser
600c.f.m.
Spindle Moulder
700c.f.m.
Tablesaw 800c.f.m. (cabinet and overhead guard)
Large Thicknesser
1000c.f.m.
Travelling Journeyman
Walz through Brisbane
The tradition of the Wandergelsellen (itinerant tradesman) or traveling journeyman as they are commonly known can be
traced back to the Middle Ages when it was deemed necessary for craftsmen who had completed their training to take their
trade ‘on the road’ – also known as ‘auf der Walz’(literally that roll up) taking only what they could carry in a roll or swag, tools
and a change of clothes and necessities. Primarily these journeymen were sent out to acquire new skills and regulate the
regionally fluctuating labour markets. The traditional ‘Walz’ of the travelling journeyman lasted at least 3 years and 1 day.
Never staying longer than 3 months in any one place, their travels took them all over Europe. The tradition waned after the
introduction of free trade during the Industrial Revolution and threatened to vanish altogether until the workers’ movements
at the end of the 19th Century prompted the revival of the custom in Germany through newly established journeyman guilds,
or brotherhoods. It wasn’t until the 1980s that new, more forward thinking guilds admitted women for the first time, and an
increasing number of Journeymen hit the road who were not bound to a guild at all.
Today, those who take on this voluntary extension of their training do so with
the same motivation as their predecessors: not content with the idea of
settling into a comfortable and often static career, he or she roams the world
looking for temporary employment in order to gather experience in their craft.
The benefits of the modern Walz are reciprocal to both employer and
employee. The journeyman brings fresh insight and flexibility to the table. In return, he/she learns how other regions and
countries practice their vocation, acquires social competence, learns to cope with changing and sometimes adverse
conditions, and plays an integral part in building a Europe-wide network of colleagues.
Götz Michaelis (26) and Martin Wichmann (25) are two travelling journeymen who have extended their Walz to include the
east coast of Australia. After meeting again in a Swiss pub these two adventurers, who had already been travelling separately
for over 3 years, decided to travel together -
widening their horizons beyond Europe - to
Australia, while they still had the benefits of
youth and no entanglements. They set out on
their Down-Under Walz a little over a year later
after some planning which included securing
necessary guild contacts.
Götz has been on his quest for 4 years and 3
months while Martin for 3 years and 10
months. Götz is a cabinetmaker by trade while
Martin is a carpenter; When do they intend on
finishing the journey? Martin will head home in
October 2010 while Götz hasn’t decided:
“Probably next year after travelling to New
Zealand for 3 months; maybe. We love the
travelling, and learning different ways of
undertaking jobs, as well as meeting new
people all the time.” Their quest for learning
has seen them travel a great amount of the
western world: Denmark, Sweden Norway,
Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Italy,
just to name a few. Martin also added 4
months in Brazil to his Walz.
You don’t have to wonder if you’ve seen them
around. Retaining their old-fashioned uniform
or kluft modelled from the 19th Century shipwrights,
makes the journeyman easily
recognisable. Both working and socialising,
Götz and Martin enjoy the ease at which the
uniform enables them to interact with others.
...We love the travelling,
and learning different ways
of undertaking jobs...
Confessions of a
Pen Addict...
Turning pens is a fun and rewarding hobby. This is undoubtedly the reason behind
its continued rise in popularity. Its easy accessibility both in terms of the skill level
needed and relative affordability is what makes it the hobby of choice for most first
time woodworkers. Pen turning in its own way also offers an easy introduction to
the wider world of woodturning but it is often the added appeal of pen turning that
sets it apart from other woodturning pursuits. Simply stated, turned pens are easy
and inexpensive to make, allow you to work in a wide variety of both synthetic and
natural materials, and above all else make for a practical and beautiful gift. It is my
experience that a well turned project is one that is almost always appreciated by the
intended recipient. This coupled with the exhaustive range of pen kits and materials
that are now available means that the scope for incorporating individual design
elements is only limited to a person’s imagination. Indeed you only have to look at
the number of web sites, groups, forums and books dedicated to pen turning to
see the extent to which this aspect of turning can be taken and as a measure of its
popularity. What follows is a simple overview and discussion of the tools, accessories
and consumables needed to begin turning pens along with some hints and
tips from my experiences as a beginner. The rest, as they say is up to your imagination.
The Lathe
The first thing you will need is a lathe. Thanks to the introduction of the Carba-Tec ®
mini wood lathe in the early nineties home hobbyists now have access to an unprecedented
range of mini/midi lathes. Of the lathes currently available on the market
I have owned and used both the Carba-Tec ® MC1018 and Woodfast WM310
midi lathes. Both lathes represent excellent value and offer a range of features
and benefits that are user friendly and ideally suited to the novice pen turner. In addition
both are considered midi lathes as opposed to mini lathes largely due to the
following features. These include: a decent 1/2 horsepower motor, centre height
and distance between centres suitable for the demands of most craft projects including
turning pens. Both lathes feature a metric 30 x 3.5 spindle and a #2 Morse
taper tailstock. These specifications are now pretty much the standard among most
lathes of their size and larger. This, however, is not always the case with other
lathes available on the market and is a certainly a worthwhile consideration in the
purchase of any new lathe. The benefit of this feature becomes most apparent
should you need, wish or want to transition your work between another lathe or simply
upgrade to another or larger lathe. This of course can only add to the future resale
value of your machine as well as allow for the easy transition of accessories
without the inherent frustration and cost of having to replace them all. A range of
speeds say from 500 rpm to over 3000rpm will allow you to complete the many and
varied tasks of turning a pen on a lathe from drilling the blank, milling the ends and
turning the blank through to the final stages of sanding and finishing.
At the lathe.
Using the brass tube as a
cutting guide.
The Mandrel
The next thing you will need is a mandrel. This allows you to turn a pen between
centres without the risk or interference that would otherwise be involved using centres.
Of all the mandrels available I’ve always found the standard mandrel (MAND-
92) to be the most user-friendly and as for reasons already explained these always
tend towards the #2 Morse Taper variety. Should the particular pen kit your turning
dictate that a somewhat shorter length need to be turned then old bushes and pen
tubes are always readily at hand to pack out a mandrel should it prove necessary.
Finally, as an added bonus your standard mandrel always comes supplied with a set
of bushes for the standard 7mm twist pens. These undoubtedly remain the most
popular kit available on the market and I don’t know of any pen turner who hasn’t
lost count of the number of these that they’ve made!
Cutting the pen blank
Cutting the pen blank to size is the first and easiest of all the pen turning
tasks to accomplish. This can be done either using a handsaw or on a
machine such as bandsaw. The simplest trick to remember is to always
over cut the blank by at least a few millimetres over and
above the length of the brass tube. By over cutting the blank
and then blind drilling to the appropriate depth then allows you
to cut the blank to the correct length reducing the risk of ruining
the blank due to blowout.
The Right Cordless Drill - The key to
easy assembly work
After spending a fair bit of time and effort preparing a
project for final assembly, it can be extremely frustrating
when the finished product doesn’t look like it should,
simply because your cordless drill/ driver let you down.
Three of the most common issues which lead to excessive
use of colourful language during final assembly
are discussed below.
Power and touch
When working with hardwoods you’ll need a bit of
grunt, even when you’ve pre-drilled and countersunk
pilot holes. But drills with grunt generally don’t offer
“touch”, especially when driving with high torque. It’s
maddening to have breakout around the screw head
because it’s been run too deep due to inconsistent
torque shut-off.
Battling battery run time
You’ve actually planned ahead for that weekend project
and popped your cordless drill battery onto the
charger Friday evening so you can get stuck into it first
thing Saturday morning. You’re going great guns until
you drive the next screw and hear the motor start to
struggle – the battery is already flat - and you’re only
a half hour into the job - Bugger!
Driving fasteners in confined areas
You’ve built a nice, small cabinet and you need to
mount the drawer slides. Your bulky cordless drill can’t
Company History
Great product ideas sometimes emerge when two different disciplines such as
woodworking and metalworking collide. In 1986 Craig Sommerfeld was in the
process of building his house and needed to find a way to attach his doweled face
frames to his kitchen cabinet carcase members. A tool and die maker by trade, but
a woodworker out of necessity, Craig had a problem. Not wanting to nail them on
and then fill with putty, he designed and built "Craig’s Jig" which was a single-hole
pocket hole jig crafted from steel and aluminum that allowed him to attach the
face frames from the inside of the cabinet where the joint could be hidden from view. Encouraged by friends and co-workers, Craig built a few more
jigs and set out to show them to the public at a woodworking show. What Craig found at these woodworking shows was an audience who had no
knowledge of the joining method he was promoting, however they were very interested in learning about a new way to build woodworking projects.
So… week after week, month after month, year after year, Craig would build his product during the week and promote them at the weekend woodworking
shows. Hundreds of trade shows and thousands of demonstrations later Kreg Tool Company has emerged as the leader in Pocket Hole
Technology. From the manual K3 Kreg Jig® to the fully-automatic Pro Series machines, Kreg offers a simple solution that has changed the way
thousands of woodworkers join wood. In 2003, Kreg diversified its product offerings by adding a category of products named Precision Measuring
Systems. These products consist of a Precision Miter Gauge, Precision Band Saw Fence, and Precision Trak and Stop Kit that enable a tablesaw,
band saw, and miter saw to cut more accurately and consistently than ever before. Kreg continues to be an innovator and market leader
across a variety of tool categories.
NEW KREG KLAMPS 2010
Some of our new items for 2010
Bench Klamps
Instead of being restrained to clamping in very specific places, Klamp System components let you work wherever you need to most. Utilizing
a simple technology called Inter-Lok, the Bench Klamps, available in two sizes can be quickly added almost anywhere you need it, positioned
precisely, rotated 360 degrees, and – just as quickly as it was added – removed to regain your perfectly flush work surface. Add a Klamp
Trak to the edge of your workbench or add a Klamp Plate to the center of your workbench, and start clamping where you’ve never been
able to before. For the very first time, you can stop working around your clamps and start working with them.
Heavy Duty Bench Klamp System.
Add a helping hand to your workbench with our Large Bench Klamp System. This 10" x 10" x 1/4" thick sturdy steel plate is extremely rugged
to handle your toughest clamping applications. Perfect for pocket hole joinery, or as a general hold-down clamp while routing, sanding, etc.
Klamp Table
You don’t need an army of clamps to get the job done; you just need the right ones. Our Klamp Table is the ultimate ‘helping hand’ around the
workshop and the easiest way to get perfectly flush Pocket-Screw Joints, one after another.
Precision Router Table
A quality router table is one of the most important tools for any serious woodworker
to have around the woodshop. Whether you’re routing a simple dado, putting
the finishing touch on a countertop, or building an entire set of raised
panel doors from scratch, the Kreg Precision Router Table – through a series
of innovative new features – helps woodworkers of all levels finish
projects faster, easier, and with greater precision than ever before.
Precision Benchtop Router Table
Whether it’s being thrown into the back of a ute on the way to the
jobsite or used to save space in a small woodshop, the Precision
Benchtop Router Table is the rugged
and mobile solution to true precision
routing. For the very first time
having portability doesn’t mean
giving up the precision and
features of a full-sized
router table.
INCRA MITRE EXPRESS REVIEW
By Dean Bielanowski
From onlinetoolreviews.com
Without a doubt, the table saw is definitely the most favoured cutting machine in most woodworker's and fine furniture
builder's shops. It can make numerous types of cuts, and with a good blade, can deliver smooth clean cut results. But your
simple table saw and fence setup is only good for a select range of cutting tasks. Adding a mitre gauge to the mix adds another
bag full of cutting abilities to the mix. But even so, there are certain cuts you simply cannot make safely with your basic
table saw setup.
Many woodworkers build jigs and sleds to further expand the use of their saw, but if you are like me, and would rather spend
your meager amount of time allowed to you actually making projects than building jigs, a device like Incra's new Miter Express
might peak your interest... Let's see what this 'tool' can do...
Mitre Express
So, what is it? Basically, it allows you to make cuts on your saw you probably couldn't normally make with a simple table saw
setup, and it allows you to make these cuts safely. It's other major marketing standpoint is....
Well, let's find out exactly how it works, and how easy it is to assemble and use. You will need a mitre gauge to use the Mitre
Express. It can accept virtually any gauge on the market that conforms to the 3/4" x 3/8" slot standard.
Assembly
The mitre express comes shipped in a relatively small, compact box. Once assembled however, its size is several times
larger than in its packed form. Unpacking is quickly achieved as all components are bundled together well, but head straight
for the printed instruction manual first to get you started with the unpacking and assembly process.
Assembly will take about 20 minutes, and involves some screw-driving, mitre slot fit tuning, a couple of saw cuts, and a little
more screw-driving.......
