of mid-1950s vintage Chryslers and
several Mopar muscle cars from the
late 1960s and early 1970s.
Hanish houses the collection at a
3,200-square-foot storage facility he
built just across the Alabama state line
in Tennessee. Most of the cars are
projects in progress, found through
word of mouth and classified ads.
One, a 1982 Dodge Mirada in pristine
condition, he literally stumbled onto
while driving to work. Unfortunately
a tree has since fallen on the vehicle,
but he’s working to salvage it.
“It was about 5 a.m., and I was
taking a route I don’t normally take,”
Hanish recalls. “I spotted the Mirada
grille, which is very distinctive, out of
the corner of my eye. The car had a
for-sale sign in the window. I called the
owner, met him at lunchtime and
bought the car.”
Hanish describes his wife as “neutral”
about his hobby. “She knows I
have a lot of cars, she knows where I
am and what I’m doing when I’m out
working on them, and she knows what
I’m spending my money on,” he says.
“She also knows that I could recover
the investment.”
With retirement coming up later
this year, Hanish is looking forward
to spending more time on his hobby.
“Cars and grandkids,” he chuckles.
“That’s what my retirement’s going
to be about.” ■
