Based on these results, the author concludes that multicode substitution can be<br />

performed effectively in the presence of despecialization. Consequently one of the<br />

disadvantages associated with multicode substitution – the increased size of the virtual<br />

machine instruction set – has successfully been overcome. This allows multicode<br />

substitution to be performed in the presence of other virtual machine optimizations<br />

that make use of those bytecodes whose functionality is not specified by the Java<br />

Virtual Machine Specification.
