Introduction
Welcome to Lancashire Law School at the University
of Central Lancashire (UCLan), which was established
over 40 years ago and is now one of the UK’s leading
providers of legal education.
Lancashire Law School is based in the historic Harris
Building and benefits from impressive learning
facilities that stimulate learning in new and exciting
ways. We are home to over 1,000 undergraduate,
postgraduate and professional students, undertaking
a range of courses taught by highly qualified and
experienced staff.
Our teaching is informed by cutting-edge research,
led by internationally renowned researchers in the
field of law, including a number of professors and
readers. In fact, in the latest Research Assessment
Exercise (RAE), Lancashire Law School entered 76
research publications, of which a significant proportion
were rated World-leading or ‘Internationally excellent’
in terms of originality, significance and rigour. The
overall result made Lancashire Law School the
top-ranking post-1992 law school in the North of
England.
The Law School enjoys strong partnerships with the
professions,businesses and other organisations, which
means that our students are able to undertake
practical projects, often involving international links
which provide opportunities for study abroad and a
focus on developing all-round

Innovative
teaching,
outstanding
courses
Lancashire Law School offers a wide variety
of programmes at all levels that combine
research-informed teaching with real-world
practicality, ensuring that students maximise
their potential for independent critical
learning.
Our undergraduate, postgraduate,
professional and CPD courses include
full-time, part-time, block delivery and
elearning options, and are taught by
professionally qualified and research active
staff who have experience of working
within the legal profession and with other
organisations.

Our courses
LLB(Hons)
Lancashire Law School offers a range of qualifying Law
degrees. Students can complete an LLB(Hons) or can
combine the study of Law with pathways in:
• International Studies (languages)
• Business
• Psychology
• Criminology
• Human Rights
Law foundation course
For those not yet ready for undergraduate study, there is a
Law Foundation course.
MLaw
The Masters in Law course is a 4 year programme that
combines the academic elements of an undergraduate
Bachelor of Laws degree with the professional and
vocational training of the Legal Practice Course. It is an
integrated and rigorous exempting degree which allows
students to go straight on to a training contract upon
successful completion.
Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) / LLB(Hons)
Senior Status
These conversion courses allow non-law graduates or those
with a degree from abroad to acquire the academic
knowledge needed to pursue professional training and a
legal career in England and Wales as either a solicitor (Legal
Practice Course) or a barrister (Bar Professional Training
Course). Students choosing the GDL from the outset can
‘top up’ to an LLB(Hons) Senior Status should they wish to.
The Senior Status LLB is a graduate entry advanced two-year
degree.
Legal Practice Course (LPC)
The LPC provides the practical side of legal education for
those wishing to become a solicitor. The course is taught by
experienced, professionally qualified legal educators and
boasts a dedicated support team. Comprehensive
pro-bono activities, facilitated by tutors with a wide range
of practical experience, allow students to receive 'on-the-job'
training.
Professional Skills Course (PSC)
The PSC is the final phase of compulsory training to become
a solicitor and is completed during a training contract
before qualification.
Intensive CPD short courses
A variety of courses are available, from one hour online
webinars that include live chat and discussion, to half-day
on-site workshop sessions. Each short course provides an
appropriate number of hours of CPD points for the Solicitors
Regulation Authority (SRA).
LLM Law
A flexible programme providing a range of modules
ensuring the LLM is tailored to individual interests.
The LLM Law is also available with a pathway in:

Study on campus or by distance learning
Study from anywhere in the world with internet access on
any of our innovative and highly commended online
courses, offered through our interactive state of the art
Virtual Learning Environment. Available for LLB, LLM, GDL
and CPD courses. Enquire about the option for PhD/MPhil
study via distance learning.
Research degrees
We offer a full range of research degrees in law and related
disciplines, including MPhil and PhD on both a full- and
part-time basis. Our programmes are supported by the
wide-ranging expertise of the Law School academics who
act as supervisors, tutors and mentors. We offer excellent
library resources and office facilities and full access to our
targeted careers service. All research students are
encouraged to take active part in the life and research of
the Law School through participation in seminars and
workshops and part-time teaching.
Raising the bar in legal
education
Lancashire Law School is home to over 50 staff, including
internationally renowned professors. Many staff are
professionally qualified and research active, with experience
in practice as solicitors, barristers and judges or as senior
managers in major organisations. Our students benefit
from this knowledge and expertise and gain real insight
into legal practice.
In the National Student Survey for the past three years,
Lancashire Law School has been ranked in the top 16 law
schools nationally for student satisfaction. We aim to create
a personal experience by focusing teaching in small groups,
which encourages trusted relationships between students
and staff and ensures advice and support is available at
all times.
All courses are supported by the University's web-based
Blackboard facility, with ICT an integral part of all
programmes. The University subscribes to extensive
electronic legal databases and journals, while all students
are registered as users of UCLan’s network with a dedicated
network space, accessible through the numerous on-site
workstations or remotely.

Building on a history of strong performance in legal
research, a significant proportion of publications were rated
as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the last
Research Assessment Exercise, in terms of originality,
significance and rigour.
We are extremely proud of this and the fact that the overall
result made us the top-ranking post-1992 law school in the
North of England. Contributing to this success are a number
of internationally renowned researchers in the field of law,
whose work is having a major impact in a variety of
specialist areas of law, policy and practice, both in the UK
and internationally. These include:
• Professor Richard Taylor, who has published extensively in
copyright and contract law and in criminal law, where his
work is widely used by courts across the country. He has
acted as adviser and expert in a number of academic and
educational consultations and currently holds the office
of Honorary Secretary of the Society of Legal Scholars.
• Dr Mohammed El Said, who researches
as a consultant with international
organisations including the World
Health Organisation (WHO) and has
several refereed publications in the
field of international intellectual
property rights. Under commission by
WHO he has developed and published
policy documents on the application of intellectual
property rights in emerging economies.
• Helen Codd, who is an expert in law and
criminal justice. She has extensive
experience of researching issues relating
to women, children, crime and justice,
especially in relation to imprisonment,
and her publications have influenced
the decisions of the European Court of
Human Rights and the policies of the
United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.
• Professor Keyuan Zou is an expert in
Public International Law, particularly in
the law of the sea/maritime law, security
and sustainability of the oceans. As such,
he is often consulted by governments,
is a frequent keynote speaker at
international conferences and has been
cited in international courts regarding
matters relating to issues such as international boundary
issues. He has published over 60 refereed papers in English
academic journals and 10 single-authored and co-edited
books. He sits on the editorial boards of authoritative
academic journals in his discipline.

Far more than
a degree
Whilst it is true that studying a degree course
at Lancashire Law School is a great investment
for the future, it is also true that qualifications
on their own are often no longer enough.
Employability at the heart of all programmes
That is why we place so much emphasis on embedding
employability skills across all our programmes. Our
undergraduate courses have a unique ‘skills spine’ that
develops a range of academic and employability skills,
from day one to beyond graduation. These skills include
research, reasoning, presentation skills, IT, interviewing
and negotiation. During their course, students will also
have opportunities for structured work experience, to
practice job applications and the chance to enhance
their CV and hone their interview techniques.
High achieving alumni
We provide dedicated and specialist careers guidance and
draw on the advice of our highly successful alumni to
give our students the best start in their post-university life
and set them on their way to success in their chosen field.
The result is that our graduates are continually recognised
for their successes. Recent examples include two of our
students who were awarded prestigious law scholarships
from the Inns of Court in London towards the Bar
Professional Training Course; one of our law graduates
taking the legal world by storm after winning the first case
of its kind in the High Court; and another who became Law
Teacher of the Year. Lancashire Law School is consistently
ranked in the UK’s top 20% for graduate level employment
(Destination of Leavers of Higher Education (DHLE) survey).
Real-world skills
Lancashire Law School has been ranked 14th for graduate
employability in the Destination of Leavers of Higher
Education (DLHE) survey, and we provide all the
opportunities to develop real-world skills that you would
expect. Law students are encouraged to take up internships,
undertake research, take part in summer schools and more.
Law students also enjoy a rewarding experience through
their engagement with a range of voluntary agencies such
as Victim Support, the Citizens Advice Bureau and local
charities, as well as placements with various law firms and
public bodies such as Lancashire county Council.
We regularly receive glowing feedback from employers,
locally, regionally, nationally and internationally with regard
to the maturity and skills of our graduates.
Pro Bono Law Clinic
Students on the professional courses successfully operate
the School's Pro Bono Law Clinic where they advise clients
on diverse legal matters, supervised and supported by
professionally qualified staff.
Educational visits
Our students can also take advantage of a wide variety
of educational visits for example to the Royal Courts of
Justice and the Supreme Court in London, and the European
Commission in Brussels. We regularly have guest speakers
on campus, including some of our successful alumni who
have gone on to be judges, QCs, CEOs, Chief of Police and
who work at national and international organisations.

Global horizons
Lancashire Law School’s purpose is to develop

vision we foster extensive
links and partnerships –
developing all the time

with Commonwealth
countries, where legal
systems are similar to the UK, the franchising
of our degree programmes in countries such as Mauritius
and encouraging students to study abroad via the British
Council Erasmus scheme and take part in international
exchanges and placements.
UCLan's Cyprus campus
In October 2012 UCLan opened its doors to the first cohort
of students at its new €53 million University campus
situated in Larnaka (Pyla area) offering premium British
Higher Education and Quality Standards to its students
and the society. The new campus offers the Law LLB(Hons)
and Masters of Laws LLM programmes. For more

Vibrant international culture
As home to students of over 100 nationalities and with an
excellent ranking in the International Student Barometer,
UCLan offers a vibrant, diverse community where everyone
– students and staff – feels at home and learns from each
other. Graduates from Lancashire Law School can be found
in a wide range of roles across the world, including UK and
international legal practice, the judiciary, European and UK
parliamentary offices, Chinese government legal offices,
national and international business leaders, chief executives,
chief constables and academics in universities in the UK,
China, Europe and the Middle East.

Sununda has recently won the best EU Law Student
Prize in Year 2 of her course.
“Choosing UCLan for my studies was the best decision I took.
When I arrived at UCLan, I was very warmly welcomed
and I was fascinated by the massive campus. At first I was
completely lost in my course, but my lecturers were always
there to help me and answer all my queries. The library is huge
and it provides us with all the required books along with other
facilities such as laptops that can be rented. I would definitely
agree with anyone who says that UCLan is just the place you
need to study.”

Business School in Mauritius.
Mr Roopun is the former Deputy Speaker in Mauritius
and is now a member of the Mauritian Legislative
Assembly.
“The course has helped me to critically understand important
legal, economic, financial and even political events unfolding
at the international level. The lectures have been scheduled at
reasonable intervals which enable me to follow most of them
despite my personal, professional and public commitments.
The online materials cover wide and varied sources and
encourage research and independent learning. On enrolment,
I had a lot of apprehension as to whether I would be able to
make it after more than 25 years in practice. It’s turning out
to be a truly exalting experience.”

UCLan is a top-five university in the UK and
number one in the North West for support
to entrepreneurs.
To supplement the academic rigour we offer through our
courses, all our undergraduate programmes, the Senior
Status LLB and the Graduate Diploma in Law are accredited
by the Joint Academic Stage Board; the Legal Practice
Course is accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority;
while the LLB, LPC and LLM are accredited by the Bar
Council of India.
Lancashire Law School actively works in partnership and
develops opportunities with businesses and the local
community. Funding is available for applied research
through Knowledge Transfer Partnership schemes, research
and development grants and awards. Academics are
currently funded to work on applied research projects in
the UK and internationally with a range of partners
including the Howgill Family Centre, the Racial Equality
Commission and the World Health Organisation.

graduates
Mandhlase Mwanza is from
the first group of students who
studied on the LLB foundation
programme and graduated
with a first class honours LLB
degree in July 2012.
Jerome Lynch QC graduated
from our Law School in the
1970’s and more recently, in
2011, accepted an Honorary
Fellowship with UCLan.
He is Head of his large set of Chambers in London, a Bencher
of Lincoln’s Inn and has presented a number of television
programmes, for example Crime Team, Nothing but the Truth
and People’s Court. Jerome is very supportive of our current
students particularly during their study visits to ‘Legal
London’. He has represented parties in several high profile
criminal trials across the world and engages staff and students
with many interesting tales from the experiences!
Mandhlase enrolled with the University as a mature student
in September 2008 and at the end of the first year, she won
the Lancashire Law School prize for best academic
performance. From there she went on to achieve excellent
marks on the degree, culminating in her well-deserved award
of a first class degree. She was recently awarded the prestigious
Lord Denning Scholarship to study the Bar Professional
Training Course.
Talking about her time as a law student with Lancashire Law
School, Mandhlase says: “I found studying law at UCLan
intense and challenging at times but also stimulating and
enjoyable. The academic staff are excellent teachers, brimming
with enthusiasm for their subjects, and this motivates students
to stay determined and focused. I never felt isolated and always
knew that a helpful tutor would be available to give advice
and direction when needed. More importantly, my time with
Lancashire Law School has taken me on a journey of personal
discovery, growth, and development. I have acquired so many
useful skills from the course, in particular oral communication
skills. Seminar discussions, oral presentations, interviewing, and
negotiation, mooting and debating are used heavily across all
modules on the law course and, although a bit scary at first,
these learning methods really helped to build my confidence.
I hope to build on these skills in my career as a law lecturer
after finishing my postgraduate research course!”
Stuart Ripley graduated from
UCLan in 2007 with first class
honours in Law and French
before successfully completing
our PG Diploma in Legal
Practice and he is now a
Solicitor specialising in sports law.
Vena Raffle studied the
LLB at UCLan from
1986 – 1989, before going on
to gain her solicitors
qualification.
Vera is currently Head of Investigations at the Advertising
Standards Authority UK, leading the Investigations function
in delivering quality, timely and consistent decisions across all
media, and has overall responsibility for all high profile, fast
track and sensitive cases. She is also a member of the Cinema
Advertising Association’s Appeal Panel, a member of the
British Board of Film Classification Consultative Council
and responsible for reviewing Ofcom Broadcast Advertising
Adjudications.
In his former career as a professional footballer, Stuart won
the English Premier League in 1995 and also represented
England in international competitions.

An environment
built for success
Lancashire Law School is based in UCLan’s
Harris Building, with facilities including a Moot
Court Room, Postgraduate Resource Rooms,
legal skills recording suite, and several open
access ICT rooms. These facilities are in addition
to the extensive ICT and paper-based resources
within the ultra-modern library.
Within the School, a busy activity programme includes an
active Student Law Society, diverse social events, regular
careers fairs and an eminent guest speaker programme.
In addition, students have the opportunity to engage in a
week-long study tour to the Institutions of the European
Union, plus visit the Royal Courts of Justice and take part
in exchanges to partner international universities.
Careers service
UCLan’s 'futures' centre is a support service available to all
students and graduates and offers careers and employability
advice and guidance, access to work placements,
internships, voluntary opportunities, part-time employment
and live projects, workshops, seminars and events.
The futures centre also provides a CV and interview
preparation service, as well as an online service for career
queries and CV checks.
