UNIVERSITY BASEBALL FACILITIES OF CONNECTICUT 2 0 0 8 U n i v e r s i t y o f C o n n e c t i c u t B a s e b a l l The University of Connecticut baseball team plays its home games at J.O. Christian Field, one of the finest collegiate baseball facilities in the region. Named for the longtime baseball coach (1936-61) and athletic director (1950-66), J. Orlean Christian, the field’s dimensions, changed for 2008, are currently 337’ down the left field line, 400’ to straight-away centerfield and 325' down the line in right field. Regrading, resurfacing and irrigation of the outfield was completed in the fall of 2001. HOME OF THE HUSKIES J.O. Christian Field The infield at J.O. Christian Field is made of Crimson Stone. A new drainage system with electric pumps was installed in 1999. In addition, padded fencing completely surrounds the field and within the perimeter, a crushed stone warning track. There is also a tarpaulin for rain protection. What's New With UConn Baseball The University of Connecticut baseball program has a lot to look forward to in the 2008 season. J.O. Christian Field has a new look to it as of the fall of 2007, as new fencing and stadium padding around the entire field was added. This renovation included two brand new 30-foot foul poles as well as new dimensions to the fencing all around the field. J.O. Christian Field still features permanent bleacher seating behind home plate and along the first and third base lines. Crowds at J.O. Christian Field have been in excess of 2,000 fans. J.O. Christian Field also features a fully electronic scoreboard in right field. A permanent press box along with new and extended bleacher seating were added to the facility before the 1993 season. UConn's batting and pitching facility, which was opened in 1997, has also been given an upgrade as brand new turf and netting was installed in the summer of 2007. Restored team photos and awards have been put on display to highlight past teams and individuals while new professional presentations of professional baseball playing alumni are also showcased around the facility. The 40-foot by 80-foot indoor pitching and batting facility is located adjacent to J.O. Christian Field. The building, heated, well-lit and available for year-round use by Husky players, provides two pitching and batting tunnels with ample space for practicing, working and coaching. The Husky program is currently planning a new clubhouse project with a layout that would feature wood lockers, lounge couches and a flat screen television. 38 2008 UCONN BASEBALL

Shenkman, the University of Connecticut joins the ranks of major universities nationwide with an indoor training facility that is utilized by all Husky teams and also by recreational services. Shenkman’s $2.5 million gift, one of the largest ever to the UConn Division of Athletics, helped to build an intercollegiate, intramural and recreational facility that serves the entire UConn community. The 85,000 square foot Mark R. Shenkman Training Center rivals similar facilities at other large universities. Featuring a 120-yard long synthetic playing surface, an 18,000 square foot strength and conditioning area and state-ofthe-art video capabilities, the indoor training center provides UConn’s teams with the most technologically advanced training equipment. The UConn baseball team uses the facility primarily to work on its defensive drills. Thanks to the luxurious spatial confines provided by the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, the Huskies can recreate a full infield diamond and a good portion of the outfield in order to facilitate their practice needs. The University contracted with the Hartford-based firm of Jeter, Cook and Jepson and with HOK Sport + Venue + Event, an internationally-renowned architectural firm based in Kansas City, to provide architectural and engineering services for the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center. The Mark R. Shenkman Training Center became the University’s first project certified as meeting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for “green” buildings. LEED designation is a process certifying that a building project meets a wide range of environmentally friendly criteria. The new construction marks the first college or university athletic project in the nation to earn the designation. A resident of Greenwich, Conn, Shenkman graduated from the Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from UConn in 1965 followed by a master’s degree in business administration from The George Washington University. Shenkman is the founder and president of Shenkman Capital Management, Inc., a registered investment advisor with offices in New York City and Stamford, Conn. He has served on the UConn Foundation’s Board of Directors for eight years and has been a member of its investment committee. Shenkman was elected to the UConn School of Business Hall of Fame in 2002 and has endowed a classroom and the e-Commerce Chair for the business school. Groundbreaking for the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center took place in the fall of 2004, with the doors opening in the summer of 2006. Batting/Pitching Facility The Huskies take advantage of the year-round practice facilities. The facility includes two pitching and batting tunnels. The University of Connecticut baseball program opened the Batting & Pitching Facility in 1997. Located just steps from J.O. Christian Field, the building includes two pitching and batting tunnels, and houses UConn’s ProBatter hitting machine.
