UNIVERSITY THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE OF CONNECTICUT 2 0 0 8 U n i v e r s i t y o f C o n n e c t i c u t B a s e b a l l In 2007-08, the BIG EAST will be in its third academic year as a 16-member conference. While many outside the league were curious and sometimes skeptical of the long-term prospects of the largest Division I-A conference, the student-athletes concentrated on their tasks at hand and continued the league’s proud tradition of success. BIG EAST teams earned plenty of recognition at the highest levels in 2006-07. In basketball, the Georgetown men’s team and the Rutgers women’s team each advanced to their respective Final Fours with Rutgers playing in the national championship game. The 2006 football season was the BIG EAST’s best ever. Louisville, West Virginia and Rutgers all finished in the top 12 in the final national polls. The BIG EAST posted a 5-0 bowl record and won the ESPN Bowl Challenge Cup. On the diamond, the Louisville baseball team played its way to the College World Series. In softball, De- Paul also participated in the College World Series. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA title game and the Connecticut field hockey team made it to the Final Four. The BIG EAST took the men’s and women’s M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, the top individual award in soccer. The winners were Joseph Lapira and Kerri Hanks, both of Notre Dame. The goals of the BIG EAST have never changed. The league aims and expects to compete at the highest level and does so with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A group in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets will contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 25 national championships in six different sports and 124 student-athletes have won individual national titles. The BIG EAST has always been able to boast that some of its best students are also some of its best athletes. More than 350 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. Last year in football, Brian Leonard of Rutgers won the Draddy Award, known as the academic Heisman. In addition, Rhema Fuller of Connecticut and Jay Henry of West Virginia were named national scholar-athlete award winners by the National Football Foundation. Louisville field hockey standout Jessica Javelet, the 2006 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, was named first team academic all-America. The Louisville team, which earned a berth in the NCAA Championship, was recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for the highest team GPA in the nation for a second straight year. The BIG EAST has continued its basketball success in the 21st century. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women took home the NCAA crowns. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last nine NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken five of the last eight NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. In the spring of 2001, the BIG EAST added women’s lacrosse and rowing to its growing list of sports. The first women’s golf championship was held in the spring of 2003. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization needs outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Dave Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. While BIG EAST basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden, attendance figures also are significant in soccer, women’s basketball and baseball games. More than 550 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last five summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes in 23 sports. JEFFREY ANDERSON, M.D. Director of Sports Medicine Services The department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the baseball student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for the student-athlete. The baseball team is spearheaded by Athletic Trainer Natalie Meckstroth. Physician coverage is provided by Jeffrey Anderson, M.D., the Director of Sports Medicine and Team Physician Thomas Trojian, M.D. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include Edward Collins, M.D. of the Connecticut Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Willimantic, Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury, Barry Messinger, M.D. of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester and Robert Arciero, M.D. of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of all student-athletes. Natalie Meckstroth is the baseball team's primary athletic NATALIE MECKSTROTH trainer. Currently, she is a second year graduate assist and provides medical coverage for the team and works on rehabilition programs with the athletes. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building. In addition to providing the finest in medical care for the UConn baseball program, the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 650 male and female intercollegiate student-athletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective. KRISTEN ALTIERI Baseball Contact ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS Kristen Altieri is in her first year with the University of Connecticut athletic communications office and is the contact for the baseball program. She also serves as the primary media contact for women’s volleyball, women’s ice hockey, women's cross country and women's track and field, while assisting with several other sports at Connecticut. Altieri, a native of Hamden, Conn., graduated from Endicott College (Mass.) in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree is sports management. She then interned at Southern Connecticut State University during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, while working with all 19 sports throughout her experience. JIMMY DUBA Strength and Conditioning Coach STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The strength and conditioning program for University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. Assisting directly with the Strength and conditioning efforts for UConn baseball is strength and conditioning staff member Jimmy Duba. UConn baseball players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky student-athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn baseball players can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program. Martin and his staff supervise a strength and conditioning program for each individual athlete for training all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each baseball player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each player. ALANA LINICK CPIA COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETES The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of the players college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is the primary concern. Impressively, for the past four years the Connecticut student-athlete retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Participation in athletics is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complementary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that all student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their personal time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for its intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) constantly assists all student-athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as a liaison to the academic faculty, the Division of Athletics, and the student-athlete. In serving as a liaison between the Connecticut student-athletes and University faculty and staff, the CPIA counselors also provide assistance in securing appropriate support services available with the University. These include orientation for student-athletes, supervised study halls, individual tutors and tutorial centers (an English/Writing Center, Math Center and Reading Center), and learning skills seminars. For the past four years, the writing lab and computers have been networked to a national database which allow all student-athletes to do research at their actual computer stations. A counselor is assigned to work with each intercollegiate team, and working directly with the UConn baseball program is Alana Linick. Linick monitors all aspects of each athlete’s academic life, including class schedule, arranging for tutors and progress toward a degree.
