University of Dayton

telling the story:
Introduction
The University of Dayton is on
the move. With an ambitious
strategic plan and a committed
campus community, UD is
educating for transformation and
leadership, advancing research
and scholarship, strengthening
our Catholic, Marianist identity
and expanding our global and
intercultural horizons.
UD’s excellence and momentum were conveyed in
2007-08 around the globe. Hundreds of stories about
UD people and the University’s achievements appeared
in literally thousands of media outlets online, in print and
over the air. Some highlights:
n Media outlets in at least 10 countries and 37 states
wrote about, quoted or mentioned the University of
Dayton’s programs, curriculum, research, distinct
faculty and Catholic, Marianist tradition.
n UD received significant coverage from the nation’s
largest newspapers and top higher education
publications. The New York Times, The Wall Street
Journal, USA Today, The Chronicle of Higher
Education and Inside Higher Ed covered UD programs
n UD appeared in banner online news outlets such
as CNN, FOX News and Forbes at least 108 times —
an average of twice a week. The University was
seen or heard more than 345 times in the top 100
media markets in the United States, not including
No. 82 Dayton.
n Web-only sites are gaining ground and readers,
primarily appealing to a younger demographic. UD
stories were carried by a variety of these new outlets,
including the Huffington Post, Inside Higher Ed,
Demodirt, The Palestra and Small Times.
n Recognizing that more people are turning to the
Internet for their news, the University enhanced its
presence on the Web. Our revamped news site —
http://news.udayton.edu — offers text, photos, videos
and other interactive media to attract coverage and tell
the UD story in multiple ways.
n Although this report reflects only national and regional
coverage, Dayton-area media gave UD generous and
frequent coverage of events and programs. UD experts
were tapped extensively for local stories, especially for
the presidential race and the economy. Reporters often
turned to UD students for a youth perspective.
All of these stories come together to paint the picture
of a university on the move. On these pages, you will
TRansformative
Education
The University of Dayton educates for transformation and prepares a new
generation of servant-leaders.
A distinctive element of a University of Dayton education is the seamless
connection between education and action. This cultivation of practical
wisdom stood out in the world of higher education and was widely
reported. Through an innovative curriculum, service-learning programs
and rich collaborations, students not only learned important skills but also
contributed to communities — global, national and local.
UD student Lori Hanna’s work on solar cookers and
sterilization devices was the subject of a National
Catholic Reporter cover story on “Social Entrepreneurs:
Compassionate Capitalists.”
The story reported how a UD
education enables students
to work collaboratively across
disciplines in service to others
and highlighted the ETHOS
(Engineers in Technical,
Humanitarian Opportunities
as well as the business plan
competition.
Lori Hanna
USA Today went “Beyond
the College Rankings” and examined results from the
National Survey of Student Engagement. UD ranked
above the national average for research universities in
all five benchmark areas: level of academic challenge;
active and collaborative learning; student-faculty
interaction; enriching educational experience; and
supportive campus environment. The story singled out
UD’s writing programs as exceptional, quoting English
professor Stephen Wilhoit.
In October, The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur
magazine named the University of Dayton’s
entrepreneurship program fifth best in the nation for
the second year in a row. CNN Money, the Cincinnati
Business Courier and The Associated Press wrote about
the news, which was also picked up by the Houston
growing trend of allowing finance students to manage
millions of dollars of
university investments.
These stories ran
The School of Law’s curriculum innovations attracted
national attention throughout the year. The National
Law Journal quoted Dean Lisa Kloppenberg in a feature
about 10 law schools leading the curricular reform
of Law in a similar story. UD’s new law curriculum
features an accelerated, two-year program, mandatory
externships and a skills-based competency test.
Many prominent outlets remembered the University of
The National Law Journal mentioned of the program.
UD junior Alex Orlowski reached national audiences
with his research on the millennial generation’s political
on the youth vote. The college news Web site The Palestra
also interviewed UD students on campus about how their
faith informs their politics.
Football player Brandon Cramer’s achievement as one of
15 finalists for the National Football Foundation’s Draddy
Today, NCAA Football, The Associated Press, ESPN
stories about the award presentation in New York City.
The Draddy Trophy, often referred to as the “Academic
