ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY<br />
For matters involving environmental safety and management, such as chemical<br />
spills, waste management and o<strong>the</strong>r compliance and regulatory standards<br />
related to environmental safety, you should call 202.274.7178 (during<br />
<strong>University</strong> business hours). Outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> business hours, and in<br />
emergency situations, contact campus police at 202.274.5050.<br />
PARKING<br />
In order to use <strong>University</strong> parking facilities (including handicap parking),<br />
all students, faculty and staff members must register <strong>the</strong>ir vehicle(s) with<br />
<strong>the</strong> cashier’s <strong>of</strong>fice and purchase <strong>the</strong> appropriate parking permit. Students,<br />
faculty and staff who choose not to purchase a seasonal parking permit must<br />
pay <strong>the</strong> $3.50/day rate and must present a valid (student, faculty or staff)<br />
ID. All o<strong>the</strong>rs must pay <strong>the</strong> $8.00/day rate. A valid parking permit (or daily<br />
pass) is required at all times. Parking permits may be purchased at <strong>the</strong> cashier’s<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice, located in Building 39, Room 201. The cashier’s <strong>of</strong>fice is open<br />
for business Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM–5 PM. Pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> course<br />
registration (class schedule) must be presented to <strong>the</strong> cashier’s <strong>of</strong>fice in order<br />
to purchase a parking permit; <strong>the</strong>refore, students must complete <strong>the</strong><br />
registration process prior to obtaining a parking permit (not applicable to<br />
<strong>University</strong> employees).<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy<br />
The unlawful possession, use, or distribution <strong>of</strong> illicit drugs and alcohol by<br />
students on <strong>University</strong> property or as part <strong>of</strong> any <strong>University</strong> activity<br />
is prohibited.<br />
Federal and <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> laws prohibit <strong>the</strong> unlawful use, manufacture,<br />
possession, control, sale and dispensation <strong>of</strong> any illegal narcotic,<br />
dangerous drug, or alcohol.<br />
The health risks associated with <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> illicit drugs and <strong>the</strong> abuse <strong>of</strong> alcohol<br />
include physical and mental impairment, emotional and psychological<br />
deterioration, fine and gross motor degeneration, and death.<br />
Students who unlawfully possess, use, or distribute illicit drugs or alcohol<br />
shall be sanctioned. Sanctions may include referral for criminal prosecution,<br />
expulsion, suspension, reprimand, or requiring <strong>the</strong> student to complete an<br />
appropriate rehabilitation program.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbia</strong> provides confidential counseling<br />
and referral services to students with problems related to drug use and alcohol<br />
abuse. The <strong>University</strong> also provides information about substance abuse<br />
and treatment programs available to UDC students.<br />
Students who desire information regarding substance abuse or treatment<br />
programs should contact <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> Health Services at 202.274.5030.<br />
FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (FERPA)<br />
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law<br />
that protects <strong>the</strong> privacy <strong>of</strong> student education records. Education records are<br />
directly related to <strong>the</strong> student and are maintained by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Student<br />
educational records are confidential and will only be shared by <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>ficials with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>University</strong> faculty or staff or with lending agencies that<br />
have a legitimate interest to know certain information. FERPA prevents <strong>the</strong><br />
release <strong>of</strong> information about a student, o<strong>the</strong>r than directory information,<br />
without <strong>the</strong> student’s consent.<br />
Under FERPA, students are given certain rights regarding education records:<br />
1. The right to inspect and review education records pertaining to <strong>the</strong><br />
student kept by <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
2. The right to request <strong>the</strong> amendment <strong>of</strong> education records <strong>the</strong> student<br />
believes to be inaccurate, misleading or o<strong>the</strong>rwise in violation<br />
<strong>of</strong> his or her privacy rights<br />
3. The right to limit disclosure <strong>of</strong> education records<br />
4. The right to file with <strong>the</strong> US Department <strong>of</strong> Education a complaint<br />
concerning alleged failures by <strong>the</strong> institution to comply with <strong>the</strong><br />
requirements <strong>of</strong> FERPA and <strong>the</strong> regulations. The complaint should<br />
be in writing and contain specific allegations <strong>of</strong> fact. The complaint<br />

DIRECTORY INFORMATION<br />
Directory information is information contained in an education record <strong>of</strong><br />
a student that generally would not be considered harmful or an invasion <strong>of</strong><br />
privacy if disclosed. It includes, but is not limited to: <strong>the</strong> student’s name;<br />
student’s address; telephone listing; electronic mail address; photograph;<br />
date and place <strong>of</strong> birth; major field <strong>of</strong> study; dates <strong>of</strong> attendance; classification;<br />
enrollment status (undergraduate or graduate, full-time or part-time);<br />
participation in <strong>of</strong>ficially recognized activities and sports; weight and height<br />
<strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> athletic teams; degrees, honors, and/or awards received; and<br />
previous education agency or institution attended.<br />
Information that can never be identified as directory information are a<br />
student’s Social Security number (SNN); student identification number<br />
(SID); race and ethnicity; gender; religious preference; country <strong>of</strong> citizenship;<br />
grades and grade point average; class schedule; disciplinary actions; and<br />
biometric record (for example, fingerprints).<br />
DISCLOSURE WITHOUT CONSENT<br />
Please note that <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> may be permitted or required to release educational<br />
records without a student’s consent under <strong>the</strong> following conditions:<br />
school <strong>of</strong>ficials with legitimate educational interest; o<strong>the</strong>r schools to which<br />
a student is transfering; specified <strong>of</strong>ficials for audit or evaluation purposes;<br />
appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student; to local<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficials or authorities pursuant to specific law regarding <strong>the</strong> juvenile justice<br />
system; organization conducting certain studies for or on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
school; accrediting organizations; to comply with a judicial order or lawfully<br />
issued subpoena; appropriate <strong>of</strong>ficials in cases <strong>of</strong> health and safety emergencies;<br />
to a victim <strong>of</strong> an alleged perpetrator <strong>of</strong> a crime <strong>of</strong> violence or a nonforcible<br />
sex <strong>of</strong>fense; to a parent if <strong>the</strong> student has violated any law, rule or policy<br />
governing <strong>the</strong> use or possession <strong>of</strong> alcohol or a controlled substance; or <strong>the</strong><br />
disclosure concerns sex <strong>of</strong>fenders required to register under federal law. (34<br />
