Wilson Cites Interim Chancellor MacKenzie’s<br />
Dedication to Public Service<br />
In appointing David J. MacKenzie<br />
Interim Chancellor <strong>of</strong> UMass <strong>Lowell</strong><br />
following the retirement <strong>of</strong> William T.<br />
Hogan earlier this year, UMass President<br />
Jack Wilson said MacKenzie “has<br />
dedicated himself to public service and<br />
has always served with great distinction.<br />
I have complete confidence in his<br />
ability to keep UMass <strong>Lowell</strong> moving<br />
in the right direction.”<br />
Commenting that Hogan left “big<br />
shoes to fill,” MacKenzie said, “I am<br />
honored and excited to accept this<br />
post. I have the utmost respect for<br />
what a great institution this is.”<br />
MacKenzie, who lives in Wayland,<br />
was executive director <strong>of</strong> the UMass<br />
Building Authority before being named<br />
to head the <strong>Lowell</strong> campus on an<br />
interim basis. In that capacity, he was<br />
engaged in the development and<br />
construction <strong>of</strong> 37 projects consisting<br />
<strong>of</strong> dormitories, parking garages,<br />
academic buildings, power plants<br />
and athletic facilities for the fivecampus<br />
system.<br />
He has a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan<br />
<strong>University</strong>, a master’s from Stanford<br />
<strong>University</strong> and a doctorate from<br />
Northeastern <strong>University</strong> Law School.<br />
He joined the UMass system in 1999,<br />
serving as vice chancellor for Administration<br />
and Finance at the Boston<br />
campus, then as interim chancellor in<br />
2001 before Jo Ann Gora was named<br />
Chancellor. From there, he accepted<br />
the Building Authority post.<br />
“We were looking for someone to<br />
come in and absolutely pr<strong>of</strong>essionalize<br />
it,” Wilson said. “We asked David<br />
to take that position . . . and he did<br />
a terrific job.”<br />
While MacKenzie serves as interim<br />
head <strong>of</strong> UML, a committee appointed<br />

The committee is chaired by UMass<br />
Trustee and UML alumnus William<br />
O’Shea, former executive vice<br />
president <strong>of</strong> Lucent Technologies and<br />
president <strong>of</strong> Bell Labs. The members<br />
include Chancellor MacKenzie and<br />
faculty members Susan Braunhut <strong>of</strong><br />
Biological Sciences; Julie Chen <strong>of</strong><br />
Mechanical Engineering; Kay Doyle,<br />
chair <strong>of</strong> Clinical Laboratory and Nutritional<br />
Sciences; Anne Marie Hurley <strong>of</strong><br />
Mathematical Sciences; and Steven<br />
Tello <strong>of</strong> Management. Administration<br />
members include Athletics Director<br />
Dana Skinner and Associate Vice<br />
Chancellor Joyce Gibson. Also serving<br />
are <strong>Lowell</strong> Mayor William Martin, area<br />
business executives and a local community<br />
representative. Representing the<br />
UMass President’s Office are James<br />
Julian, executive vice president,<br />
and Keith Motley, vice president <strong>of</strong><br />
business and academics.<br />

MacKenzie says, “UMass <strong>Lowell</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>fers programs recognized globally and<br />
is committed to sustainable economic<br />
development locally. The committee<br />

There is no definite timetable,<br />
although Wilson has said that the<br />
search is likely to take seven to<br />
12 months.<br />
At the completion <strong>of</strong> the search<br />
process, the committee will provide<br />
Wilson with a final list <strong>of</strong> candidates.<br />
He will then recommend a candidate<br />
to the UMass Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees.<br />
