when key lakes such as Kulykol have little or no<br />
fresh water, migrating Lesser White-fronts are<br />
concentrated on small freshwater reservoirs (e.g.<br />
Batpackol), with fringing reed marshes and<br />
surrounding grain and vegetable cultivation. In<br />
some autumns (e.g. 2003) significant numbers of<br />
Lesser White-fronts stop on <strong>the</strong> saline lake Khack,<br />
nor<strong>the</strong>rn Kazakhstan, which has extensive, shallow<br />
aquatic zones (S. Yerokhov, pers comm).<br />
Autumn staging areas on <strong>the</strong> north-west Black<br />
Sea coast of Ukraine include freshwater, salt and<br />
brackish lakes and o<strong>the</strong>r wetlands and surrounding<br />
grasslands and winter wheat fields. Shagani,<br />
Alibay and Burnas lakes, in <strong>the</strong> Dniester delta,<br />
<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> most important known roosting area (e.g.<br />
Rusev et al. 2002).<br />
Wintering<br />
The wintering grounds are only partially known,<br />
but include shallow bays, lakes and wetland<br />
complexes (freshwater, brackish water and<br />
saltwater wetland types) and surrounding<br />
cultivated land and semi-natural grassland in<br />
Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Greece, Iran, Iraq Romania,<br />
Syria, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.<br />
