Please contact the Student Advice and Career service
Entering Germany
Generally, non-EU citizens require a visa for entering Germany
(with only a few exceptions). You can apply for a visa
from a German embassy or consulate in your home country.
We advise that you apply for a visa early, as applications
can take 8–12 weeks to process.
Citizens of the EU and the European Economic Area do not
require a visa to enter Germany.
Note: Students from certain countries may enter Germany
without a visa. They can apply for a visa after entering
Germany.
For more information on formal entry requirements for
Germany, visit:
www.auswaertiges-amt.de/EN/EinreiseUndAufenthalt/Visabestimmungen_node.html
Arrival and temporary accommodation
If you do not participate in German language courses, we
recommend that you arrive 2–3 weeks before lectures begin.
This will give you time to find suitable accommodation
and complete all formalities.
Erlangen, Nuremberg and Fürth are located centrally in relation
to major German cities and are easy to reach by bus
or train. If you are arriving from abroad and have not found
any accommodation, you should book a room in a hostel or
hotel.
More information: www.hostel.de, www.hotel.de,
www.hotel.nuernberg.de
Formalities on arrival
As soon as you arrive in Germany, you will need to complete
a few formalities:
• Registration with the local authorities
• Opening a bank account
• Health insurance
• Extending or changing your visa
to a residence permit
• University enrolment
Fur further information please see www.fau.eu/international/
Erstinformationen_engl_Sprachendienst_DRUCK.indd 2 25.06.2013 12:48:35
Registration with the local authorities
You must register with the local authorities responsible for
the area of your future residence by the seventh day after
entering Germany. Note that you may only register once
you have permanent accommodation – a hostel or hotel
address is not sufficient.
Depending on where you live, you can register at:
• Erlangen: Rathaus, Bürgeramt, Rathausplatz 1,
91052 Erlangen,
• Landratsamt Erlangen-Höchstadt, Marktplatz 6,
91054 Erlangen,
• Nuremberg: Einwohnermeldeamt,
Äußere Laufer Gasse 25, 90403 Nürnberg,
• Fürth: Bürgeramt, Schwabacher Str. 170,
90763 Fürth.
For more information, visit: www.fau.eu/international/fromabroad/full-degree-students
Opening a German bank account
We recommend that you open a German bank account to
pay your rent and health insurance contributions. You can
open a bank account at any German bank. Students do not
generally pay monthly fees.
Health insurance
Everyone living in Germany must have health insurance.
Student health insurance is available from all statutory
health insurance providers in Germany. Some individuals
may require private health insurance.
Please note: If you are entitled to
health insurance services in Germany as a student according
to European or international law (for example if you are
covered by health insurance in your home country for your
stay in Germany) you may not have to apply for student
health insurance in Germany. If such an entitlement exists,
students can contact statutory health insurance providers
which can issue a health insurance certificate required for
enrolment and advise students on whether their international
insurance offers sufficient cover for Germany.
After you have applied for health insurance coverage from a
statutory health insurance provider you will receive an
insurance certificate which must be presented when you
enrol at the University.
For more information, visit: www.fau.eu/international/fromabroad/full-degree-students/insurance.shtml
Visa extension
All non-EU citizens must extend their student visa to a
residence permit for study purposes when they arrive in
Germany.
You can extend your visa by contacting the immigration
authorities responsible for your place of residence;
Orientation events for
international students
The Student Advice and Career Service and the Central
Office for International Affairs hold an information event
just before the start of the semester to introduce international
students in bachelor study courses to the University,
Erlangen and Nuremberg. During the event, international
students will be given essential information on studying at
the University and how to plan their courses. Questions
may be asked during the event.
International students must register for the event via e-
mail: ibz@fau.de
The Central Office for International Affairs will organise a
number of intercultural trainings for international students
in master’s degree programmes taught in English at the
beginning of the winter semester. Besides, advice and
support with formalitites to be done after your arrival will
be provided by the respective programme coordinator. The
Central Office for International Affairs will also assist you in
non-academic issues.
Subject introduction events
Almost every subject offers an introduction event just
before the semester starts. All subject regulations will be
explained at this event and students can ask for help in
planning their courses. For more information please see
www.fau.de/studium/studienorganisation/studienbeginn/
ersemestereinfuehrung-fakultaeten.shtml (only in German),
or, visit the website of the corresponding study programme.
Costs and financing
need around 670 euros per month to finance costs of living.
Student jobs
Many students work alongside their studies in Germany.
International students are also entitled to work alongside
their studies. Students from non-EU countries and the
newest member countries of the EU (Bulgaria and Romania)
may only work 120 full or 240 half days per year. In addition,
employment as a student assistant at the University
is permitted and is not counted towards the 120 full or 240
half working days.
For more information, visit: www.fau.eu/international/fromabroad/full-degree-students/costs-financing.shtml
Finding accommodation
Finding a place to live in Erlangen can be difficult as the
available accommodation is limited. If you can't find a place
to live in Erlangen, try looking in Nuremberg or Fürth. These
locations are easy to reach from the University by bus or
train.
Students have several options for finding accommodation:
• student accommodation run by Student Services
• private accommodation
• room in private student accommodation
• room in shared accommodation
More information on finding accommodation
and contact addresses are available at:
Schedule
To plan your schedule, you will need to refer to the examination
regulations for your subject and the course catalogue.
The examination regulations state which courses a
student must attend during the degree programme. Generally,
the examination regulations also state which semester
specific courses must be attended in. Once you have
checked which courses you need to attend in the examination
regulations, you can find course details including the
date and time in the course catalogue.
Examination regulations (only in German): www.fau.de/
Course catalogue (mainly in German): http://univis.fau.de
Note: Many departments publish complete schedules for
their students. Check the website for your degree programme
