CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change presents an urgent global challenge, often affecting children first and worst. Climate change seriously affects children due to a wide range of impacts including rising malnutrition, diminished water supplies, increased disease and more frequent and severe storms and floods.
Young ambassadors present the Declaration of the UNICEF-organised Children’s Climate Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Declaration called on world leaders to take action to deal with climate change. UNICEF took part in the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, highlighting the need to put child rights at the core of tackling climate change. Alongside the summit, UNICEF organised a Children’s Climate Change Forum, providing children from 46 developed and developing nations with the opportunity to share ideas and develop their own initiatives. UNICEF UK helped four UK children to attend. The Forum produced a global declaration for world leaders, with 13 young delegates meeting Heads of State at the Summit. UNICEF UK also played a key role in developing and piloting a groundbreaking new standard and certification scheme for climate adaptation, aiming to ensure that funds go to the best climate change programmes benefiting children in developing countries. As part of this fundraising initiative, UNICEF UK donated to four climate adaptation programmes as an alternative to carbon offsetting. 59 solar kits for schools in Mauritania education programme with 30 schools in Ethiopia, aiming to plant 30,000 trees rainwater harvesting systems for 15 schools in Somalia emergency preparedness and water improvement programme at schools in Guyana, reaching around 3,900 children. UNICEF UK’s total carbon footprint for 2009 was 1,629 tonnes CO 2 (down from 2,025 tonnes in 2007 – a 20 per cent reduction). Because we have grown since 2007, our emissions per full time equivalent staff member have fallen from 13.1 to 8.9 tonnes over the same period – a drop of more than 30 per cent. We will reduce this by at least another 5 per cent in 2010, as part of the 10:10 campaign. GUYANA : DEALING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE “Mosquitoes are arriving, bringing malaria and dengue fever. Crops are failing. When it is too hot, some children can’t come to school. I want to help my government educate people about climate change, and help people manage its effects better,“ says Bernie Robertson, age 20, Annai, Guyana.
