UNICEF as a global force
For more than 60 years, UNICEF has been a leader in providing lifesaving
help for children caught up in emergencies around the globe.
With a permanent presence in more than 190 countries, UNICEF is
poised to respond rapidly wherever and whenever disaster strikes.
Your support helped UNICEF UK commit £24.3 million to assist the
millions of children affected by emergencies in 2009.
During emergencies, UNICEF delivers life-saving help for children in
five key areas:
health and nutrition
water and sanitation
education
protection from abuse and exploitation
coordination and logistics.
SRI LANKA : CONFLICT
In 2009, government forces pushed
into the last remaining area occupied
by the Tamil Tigers. More than 70,000
people died in the 25-year internal
conflict. The war displaced around
280,000 people, of whom 250,000
currently live in government-controlled
camps around Vavuniya.

Dilushana’s mother was raped
and killed during the conflict in
Sri Lanka. Dilushana goes to a
UNICEF-supported school.
In the camps, UNICEF helped provide
clean water and safe sanitation for
180,000 people, immunise 27,000
children under the age of five, and treat
9,000 children for malnutrition. UNICEF
also registered nearly 1,800 separated
and orphaned children.
