BBNA Today
Though only about half of BBNA’s funding is “Indian Program” dollars, BBNA is first and foremost a Native
organization whose governing mechanisms originate with the Native people of Bristol Bay and are guided by
principles of Native self-determination.
The BBNA Board consists of representatives of each of the 31 tribal communities of Bristol Bay.
We are a diverse mix of people and cultures. The three major Alaska Native language groups in the region
include Yupik in the West, Aleut toward the South, and Athabascan in the North. Our membership includes thirty
communities and 31 tribes.
Bristol Bay, like some other regions, has two tribally run regional organizations, with BBAHC administering
health services, and BBNA advancing tribal government, economic and social development, and educational opportunities.
The region’s leadership has also chosen to create separate organizations to operate housing (the Bristol Bay
Housing Authority), and some for regional development functions, such as those of the Bristol Bay Economic
Development Corporation (BBEDC) and the Southwest Alaska Vocational Education Center (SAVEC). The mission
of BBNA as redrafted in 1992 defines the Association as a service agency dedicated to the self determination of our
Native people, and committed to enhancing regional Native unity.
