PART NUMBERING SYSTEM FOR ALTA ® F SERIES CAMERAS
The Alta part numbering system is rather complex, due to the fact it supports a wide variety of CCDs in several different
housings, each with default configurations and a variety of alterable options. This brief guide is intended to help clarify some of
the choices that are available to Apogee customers, so that they may understand their implications and be confident that they
have chosen the right camera to suit their needs from the start. Apogee sales staff is always happy to answer any questions
that may arise during this process and assist in any way they can to ensure customer satisfaction.
HOUSING OPTIONS
D01:
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
This housing is designed to accomodate smaller CCDs (18mm diagonal or less). It has a C-thread (1”) and the CCD is
at C-mount back focal distance (17.5mm or 0.69” behind the front plate, including compensation for optical offset of the
chamber windows). If you plan to use a C-mount lens or mount the camera on a microscope this housing is a good choice.
In order to mount a Nikon F-mount lens, Canon EOS or Canon FD lens, an additional external flange is required. The
standard shutter for this housing is 25mm.
This housing is designed to accomodate medium sized CCDs (about 18mm - 40mm diagonal). It has a 2” 24-TPI thread. A
2” slip-fit, also called “prime focus” or “barrel mount”, adapter threads directly into this housing. Nikon and Canon adapters
will also thread directly into this housing. This housing is not designed to work with C-mounts, but the D03 housing (see
below) is made to accomodate the same range of CCD sizes and is compatible with C-mounts. The standard shutter for
this housing is 43mm. Also available in a wide angle version (D13), contact sales staff for more information.
D02:
D03:
This housing is designed to accomodate the same medium sized range of CCDs as the D02 (about 18mm - 40mm
diagonal). It uses the same heatsink as the D02, but the housing removes the internal electromechanical shutter in order
to achieve the correct back focal distance to use with a C-mount.
D05:
D06:
This housing is the low profile version of the D01. The back focal distance is reduced from 0.69” (C-mount) to approximately
0.45” (11.4mm). In order to achieve the smaller back focal distance this housing does not accomodate an internal
electromechanical shutter.
This housing is the low profile version of the D02. The back focal distance is reduced from about 1” to approximately 0.55”
(14mm). In order to achieve the smaller back focal distance this housing does not accomodate an internal electromechanical
shutter.
This housing is designed to accomodate larger sensors (40mm - 52mm diagonal). This housing has a 2.5”-20 TPI thread.
The back focal distance is similiar to the D02 (about 1” or 25.4mm). An adapter flange is required for Nikon or Canon lens
adapters. The standard shutter for this housing is 63mm.
D07:
D09:
This housing is designed to accomodate a large range of CCDs based on customer demand and offers high cooling. This
housing has a 2.5”-20 TPI thread. The back focal distance is about 1.3” (about 34.5mm). An adapter flange is required for
Nikon and Canon lens adapters. The standard shutter for this housing is 63mm.
This housing is designed to accomodate very large sensors, like the Kodak KAF-4300 (49mm x 49mm) and the KAF-39000
(49mm x 37mm). The optical back focal distance is about 1.2” (31mm). The standard shutter for this housing is 90mm.
D10:
D11:
This housing is the low profile version of the D07. The back focal distance is reduced from about 1” to approximately
0.6” (15.24mm). In order to achieve the smaller back focal distance this housing does not accomodate an internal
electromechanical shutter.
D12:
This housing is the low profile version of the D10. The back focal distance is reduced from about 1.3” to approximately
0.7” with a 3.25” (82.55mm) square opening. In order to achieve the smaller back focal distance this housing does not
accomodate an internal electromechanical shutter.
HEAT DISSIPATION
ALTA ® F SERIES
High Performance
Cooled CCD Camera System
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
The two options for heat dissipation are fans, represented by the letter “F”, or liquid circulation, represented by the letter “L”. The standard method is fan
cooled. The fan speed is programmable using the software in either high, medium, low or off modes. Liquid circulation if not intended to provide extra
cooling, so much as it is designed to provide a means to dissipate heat away from the camera, such as outside of a closed box or away from a telescope. The
temperature of the water must be above the environmental dew point.
SHUTTERS
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
For each designated housing there is a default shutter configuration, either it has a shutter or does not come equipped with one, as is the case with the
low profile housings. The housings that do come with an electromechanical shutter installed give the customer the option to remove it, if it is not needed or
wanted. The shutter can be installed later, so long as the housing is made to accomodate one.
Shutters are the only electromechanical element of the camera and therefore one of the few things that can
wear out over time and may need replacing. They have an open time and a close time and a recommended
minimum dwell time (when fully open). The closer they are operated to the minimum recommended shutter
time, the more non-linear the results and the more pronounced the shadowed of the shutter (veining) in
the images.
Cameras with full frame sensors must either have an electromechanical shutter or be used in complete
darkness with another method of gating the exposure. Cameras with interline transfer sensors do not
require an electromechnical shutter, but may benefit from one due to leakage in the storage diode masks
during readout because the masks are not 100% opaque. If the exposure time is very short compared to
the readout time, the leakage in the masks may be an issue.
The standard window configuration on for all Alta systems is “D”, a double window on the inner chamber. The windows are fused silica
with broadband anti-reflection coating on both sides. Also offered is a single wedge window for monochromatic imaging. Contact one of
our sales staff for more information about custom window options.
At this time, Apogee only offers USB2, represented by the letter “U”. If there are concerns about the maximum cable length of 5 meters, extra hubs and
cables can be purchased. We also offer Icron Ranger extenders which support USB cameras at distances from 100 meters (Cat5 cable) to 10km (fiberoptic
cables).
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
Apogee assigns each CCD a 5-digit code. For the majority of the CCD configurations this number is based on the manufacturer’s part number. In some
cases, like the Kodak KAF-1001E and the KAF-0261E, Apogee uses an alpha code to differentiate between the two available amplifiers on the CCD, low noise
or high dynamic range. Below is a complete list of the CCDs Apogee offers in the Alta line of cameras at this time. If you are interested in a CCD not listed
below, please contact one of Apogee’s sales staff about the possibility of integrating it into one of our systems.
CCD TYPE
ALTA ® F SERIES
High Performance
Cooled CCD Camera System
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
The abbreviations below are used to help differentiate between the various types of CCDs each model is available in. For example, Apogee carries the e2v
CCD47-10 back-illuminated, which comes in midband, broadband, ultraviolet and deep depletion models. Other CCDs, such as the e2v CCD30-11, are sold
with either back-illuminated variants, like the 47-10, or front-illuminated (open electrode). In some cases, the abbreviations are used to differentiate between
monochrome and color versions of CCDs. The quantum efficiency of each CCD varies between types.
CCD GRADE
CCD type abbreviations:
MN = Monochrome non-microlensed
CM = Color microlensed
MB = Midband
BB = Broadband
UV = Ultraviolet
OE = Open electrode
DD = Deep depletion
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
CCD grades are defined by the manufacturers of the CCDs in the specification sheets for the sensor models. The grades set limits on the number of cosmetic
defects, cluster defects and point defects for each sensor. What each manufacturer defines as a “defect” varies between manufacturers and varies from CCD
to CCD. In the past, many CCDs were available in multiple grades, such as grade 0 (no defects), grade 1 and grade 2. Now, most CCDs are available in a
single grade, which may have a legacy number or “standard grade”. If the CCD does not have a manufacturer supplied name for the grade of the sensor,
Apogee calls it standard, or “S”. In the event of an upgrade however, a “C” would appear in this section of the part number, indicating that the CCD was
customer supplied, because the current CCD would be moved from the old housing to a new one. Customers are welcome to supply their own CCDs if they
have one they would like to use.
Common CCD grade abbreviations:
S = Standard
0 = Grade 0 (e2v only)
C = Customer supplied
X = Engineering grade
1 = Grade 1
2 = Grade 2
ANALOG ELECTRONICS
EXAMPLE: D02F-MG43D-U04710-MB1F
With the recent release of the Alta F Series, “F” is the default for electronics. The new Alta F Series electronics offer faster readout speeds at 16-bit
digitazation to 8MHz.
