Remington Honor Medal<br />

The Remington Honor Medal, named for eminent community pharmacist,<br />

manufacturer, <strong>and</strong> educator Joseph P. Remington (1847–1918), was<br />

established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>American</strong><br />

pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year, or<br />

during a long period <strong>of</strong> outst<strong>and</strong>ing activity or fruitful achievement.<br />

Hugo H. Schaefer Award<br />

Thomas R. Temple, BSPharm, MS<br />

The Hugo H. Schaefer Award was established in 1964 to recognize <strong>American</strong><br />

<strong>Pharmacists</strong> Association (<strong>APhA</strong>) members who have made outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

voluntary contributions to society, the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> pharmacy, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>APhA</strong>.<br />

Hubert H. Humphrey Award<br />

Wendall F. Gaston, BSPharm, MBA, PharmD<br />

The Hubert H. Humphrey Award was established in 1978 to recognize<br />

<strong>APhA</strong> members who have made major contributions in government <strong>and</strong>/or<br />

legislative service at the local, state, or national level.<br />

Good Government Pharmacist-<strong>of</strong>-the-Year Award<br />

Betsy Meredith Elswick, PharmD<br />

This award recognizes an individual pharmacist who actively contributes<br />

to the community through his or her voluntary involvement in the political<br />

process. Nominees must be active members <strong>of</strong> <strong>APhA</strong> <strong>and</strong> a state pharmacy<br />

association. The government affairs activity in which the recipient<br />

participated must have raised pharmacists’ awareness <strong>of</strong> the political<br />

process, improved the pharmacy pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> the political process, as<br />

well as improved service <strong>and</strong> education to the public. Supported by the<br />

<strong>APhA</strong> Political Action Committee Board <strong>of</strong> Governors.<br />

Good Government Student Pharmacist-<strong>of</strong>-the-Year<br />

Award<br />

Andrew M. Helm<br />

Established in 2004, this award recognizes a student pharmacist who<br />

successfully organizes student pharmacist grassroots activity within<br />

his or her chapter <strong>and</strong> actively promotes the value <strong>of</strong> advocating for the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The award, which is presented during the Political Leadership<br />

Breakfast, is based on the student’s ability to raise awareness <strong>of</strong> local <strong>and</strong><br />

national pharmacy issues while embracing the concept <strong>of</strong> teamwork <strong>and</strong><br />

collaboration among students, practitioners, <strong>and</strong> their state pharmacy<br />

association. Supported by the <strong>APhA</strong> Political Action Committee Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Governors.<br />

Honorary Membership<br />

Jeff Poston, PhD, MRPharmS, <strong>and</strong> Roger K. Browning<br />

Honorary membership in <strong>APhA</strong> is conferred by the <strong>APhA</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees<br />

upon individuals, either within the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> pharmacy or outside<br />

<strong>of</strong> it, whose activities <strong>and</strong> achievements have had a significant impact<br />

upon the public health, the pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>and</strong> its practitioners.<br />

Hazel M. Pipkin, BSPharm, F<strong>APhA</strong><br />

The honorary president <strong>of</strong> <strong>APhA</strong> is nominated by the <strong>APhA</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees<br />

<strong>and</strong> elected by <strong>APhA</strong> membership in recognition <strong>of</strong> a lifetime <strong>of</strong> distinguished<br />

<strong>and</strong> dedicated public service <strong>and</strong> contributions to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award<br />

Julie K. Johnson, PharmD<br />

The award recognizes an <strong>APhA</strong> member who has promoted <strong>and</strong> encouraged<br />

pharmacists to attain leadership positions within pharmacy through<br />

example as role model <strong>and</strong> mentor. The pharmacist for whom the award<br />

is named—Gloria Niemeyer Francke, PharmD—personally exemplifies<br />

the award’s criteria. Dr. Francke, 1986 <strong>APhA</strong> Honorary President <strong>and</strong><br />

1987 Remington Honor Medalist, inspired <strong>and</strong> mentored future leaders<br />

throughout her illustrious pharmacy career.<br />

H.A.B. Dunning Award<br />

Cephalon, Inc.<br />

Established in 1982, the H.A.B. Dunning Award recognizes an exemplary<br />

contribution to the practice <strong>of</strong> pharmacy by a pharmaceutical manufacturer<br />

or provider <strong>of</strong> support products or services, or other entities such<br />

as wholesalers, chain corporations, etc. The award is named for Henry<br />

Armitt Brown Dunning (1877–1962), former chair <strong>of</strong> the board <strong>of</strong> Hynson,<br />

Westcott, <strong>and</strong> Dunning, who, as a longst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>APhA</strong> leader, was<br />

instrumental in the funding <strong>and</strong> building <strong>of</strong> the <strong>APhA</strong> headquarters in<br />

Washington, DC.<br />

Distinguished Federal Pharmacist Award<br />

Colonel Everett B. McAllister, USAF, BSC (Ret)<br />

Established in 2003, the Distinguished Federal Pharmacist Award is the<br />

Association’s premier award recognizing a pharmacist who has distinguished<br />

himself or herself <strong>and</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession through outst<strong>and</strong>ing contributions<br />

in federal pharmacy practice, resulting in significant improvement<br />

in the health <strong>of</strong> the nation <strong>and</strong>/or the population he or she serves.<br />

Supported by the Roche Foundation.<br />

<strong>APhA</strong> Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in<br />

Precepting Award<br />

in pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice. An <strong>APhA</strong> fellow also has rendered outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

service to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession through activities in <strong>APhA</strong> <strong>and</strong> in other organizations.<br />

Examples <strong>of</strong> service to organizations may include having held<br />

Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award<br />

The Daniel B. Smith Award, established in 1964 to honor the first president<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>APhA</strong>, recognized outst<strong>and</strong>ing performance <strong>and</strong> achievements <strong>of</strong><br />

a community practitioner who had distinguished himself or herself <strong>and</strong><br />

the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> pharmacy in the recipient’s community <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

practice setting. The award was merged with the <strong>APhA</strong> Practice Excellence<br />

Award in 1994 to recognize outst<strong>and</strong>ing performance <strong>and</strong> achievements<br />

<strong>of</strong> a practitioner in any practice setting. Endowed by Bristol-Myers<br />

This award, recently renamed in memory <strong>of</strong> Captain William H. Briner, a<br />

pioneer in the development <strong>of</strong> the nuclear pharmacy practice specialty,<br />

recognizes the achievements <strong>of</strong> an individual who has made a significant<br />

contribution or sustained contributions to the provision <strong>of</strong> pharmaceutical<br />

care within nuclear pharmacy practice. In <strong>2011</strong>, the award was supported<br />

by GE Healthcare.<br />

<strong>APhA</strong>–APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in<br />

The award, established in 1981 In honor <strong>of</strong> Dr. Takeru Higuchi, the first<br />

president <strong>of</strong> <strong>APhA</strong>-APRS, recognizes the highest accomplishments in<br />

pharmaceutical sciences, <strong>and</strong> is international scope <strong>and</strong> stature.<br />

The Tyler Prize for Stimulation <strong>of</strong> Research<br />

Raman Venkataramanan, PhD, FCP<br />

The Tyler Prize for Stimulation <strong>of</strong> Research Award recognizes an<br />

individual(s) for encouraging research by peers, students, fellows, residents,<br />

<strong>and</strong> others via publications or by directing research, serving as a<br />

preceptor, or mentoring In any discipline <strong>of</strong> the pharmaceutical sciences.<br />

The award was established in 1962 as the Stimulation <strong>of</strong> Research Award<br />

<strong>and</strong> was renamed the Tyler Prize for Stimulation <strong>of</strong> Research Award in<br />

2001 in recognition <strong>of</strong> the distinguished scientific <strong>and</strong> administrative<br />

career or Dr. Varro “Tip” Tyler.<br />

Ebert Prize<br />

“N-(3,4-dimethoxyphenethyl)-4-(6,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-2[1H]-yl)-6,7-dimethoxyquinazolin-2-amine<br />

(CP-100,356) as a<br />

‘chemical knock-out equivalent’ to assess the impact <strong>of</strong> efflux transporters<br />

on oral drug absorption in the rat.”<br />

The Ebert Prize, administered by <strong>APhA</strong>–APRS, was established in 1873.<br />

It recognizes the author(s) <strong>of</strong> the best report <strong>of</strong> original investigation <strong>of</strong><br />

a medicinal substance published in the <strong>APhA</strong> <strong>Journal</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pharmaceutical<br />

Sciences in the past year. Both the Editorial Advisory Board <strong>of</strong> the journal<br />

<strong>and</strong> the <strong>APhA</strong>–APRS Awards Committee participate in the selection<br />

process.<br />

Wiederholt Prize<br />

Beth A. Martin, BSPharm, PhD; Ruth H. Bruskiewitz, BSPharm, MS;<br />

<strong>and</strong> Betty A. Chewning, PhD, F<strong>APhA</strong>, for the presentation “Effect <strong>of</strong><br />

a tobacco cessation continuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional education program on<br />

pharmacists’ confidence, skills <strong>and</strong> practice-change behaviors.”<br />

This award was established in 1996 as the <strong>APhA</strong> Best Published Paper<br />

Award for Economic, Social, <strong>and</strong> Administrative Sciences. In 2002, it<br />

was renamed the Wiederholt Prize in honor <strong>of</strong> Joseph B. Wiederholt,<br />

PhD (1949–2001), the first recipient <strong>of</strong> the award <strong>and</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin–Madison. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the award is to<br />

recognize the best paper published in the <strong>Journal</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong><br />

<strong>Pharmacists</strong> Association (J<strong>APhA</strong>), describing original investigation in<br />

the areas <strong>of</strong> economic, social, or administrative sciences.<br />

Clinical Research Paper Award<br />

Borrego, PhD; Dennis W. Raisch, PhD; <strong>and</strong> Katherine K. Knapp, PhD,<br />

for the presentation “Depressive symptoms in patients with type 2<br />

diabetes in the ambulatory care setting: Opportunities to improve<br />

outcomes in the course <strong>of</strong> routine care.”<br />

The award, established in 2006, is intended to promote <strong>and</strong> encourage<br />

high-quality clinical research or practice based research in the clinical<br />

sciences by recognizing an original research article in this area that<br />

has been published in J<strong>APhA</strong>.<br />

Postgraduate Best Paper Award<br />

<strong>APhA</strong>–APRS Economic, Social <strong>and</strong> Administrative Section—<br />

Poster: Haesuk Park, Kim Yoona, <strong>and</strong> Karen Rascati for the presentation<br />

“Efficacy <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> dipeptidyl peptidase-4 [DPP-4] inhibitors<br />

in type 2 diabetes: Meta-analysis.”<br />

<strong>APhA</strong>–APRS Economic, Social <strong>and</strong> Administrative Section—<br />

for the presentation “Stability studies on compounded topical steroid<br />

preparations.”<br />

The award recognizes the author <strong>of</strong> the best contributed paper<br />

(podium or poster session) presented at each <strong>APhA</strong> Annual Meeting<br />

by a postgraduate. Each <strong>APhA</strong>–APRS Section is eligible to identify a<br />

recipient for the Postgraduate Best Paper Award. <strong>APhA</strong>–APRS ESAS<br />

may also award the <strong>APhA</strong>–APRS ESAS Postgraduate Best Paper<br />

Podium Award. In addition, up to two honorable mention recognitions<br />

<strong>APhA</strong> Past President Dr. Linwood F. Tice who, in his capacity as Chair <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>APhA</strong> Committee on Student Branches in 1952–1955, was instrumental<br />

in the formation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>APhA</strong> organizational unit that evolved into <strong>APhA</strong>–ASP.<br />

to the <strong>APhA</strong>–ASP Chapters for their exceptional efforts in increasing<br />

<strong>APhA</strong> student membership on their campuses in 2009–2010 over the<br />

2010 <strong>APhA</strong> Treasurer’s Report<br />

I am pleased to report that in 2010, <strong>APhA</strong> posted its fourteenth consecutive annual operating<br />

surplus. For the year ending December 31, 2010, the Association recorded an operating<br />

surplus <strong>of</strong> $1,869,785. This compares with a surplus <strong>of</strong> $486,668 in 2009. Association<br />

revenues increased 9%, with the largest increases in grants <strong>and</strong> sponsorship (up 17%)<br />

<strong>and</strong> meeting <strong>and</strong> educational programs (up 16%). Expenses increased by 5% compared<br />

to 2009—primarily contract services associated with the fulfillment <strong>of</strong> increased revenueproducing<br />

programs <strong>and</strong> occupancy costs resulting from the first full year <strong>of</strong> occupancy in<br />

the new headquarters building. The Association terminated its pension plan during 2010 <strong>and</strong><br />

incurred approximately $2 million in nonrecurring expenses. Overall, the Association’s net<br />

assets decreased $491,462 to a total level <strong>of</strong> $14,729,490.<br />

Clark Gustafson, BSPharm, is the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Optimal Health Services in<br />

Bakersfield, CA, <strong>and</strong> currently serves as Association treasurer.<br />
