The feature story in this edition of Happenings focuses on emeritus faculty and honors the memory of those colleagues who are now deceased. It’s obvious to those of us who have followed these individuals as faculty in the College of Education that we are clearly standing on their shoulders. They’ve enabled us to continue the legacy of a college that places students at the center, focuses on academic excellence, and stays connected to the metropolitan community. Dr. John T. Langan I had the pleasure just this month of having lunch with a large group of these emeritus faculty; I wish you could have had the opportunity to be there to feel the energy in that room. We shared stories from the past, reminisced about those friends who have left us, and felt reassured about the future of the college as we discussed the new breed of young faculty joining our ranks. We have lots of heroes today— sportsmen, supermodels, media personalities. They come, they have their 15 minutes of fame, and they go. But the influence of good teachers stays with us. Multi-Faceted Program Serves Campus and Community The graduate program in the Department of Counseling offers a vibrant curriculum combined with innovative teaching methods to meet the high demand for mental health professionals. Candidates may pursue a degree from any of four specialty areas, including Elementary School Counseling, Secondary School Counseling, Agency/Community Counseling, and Student Affairs in Higher Education. The Department’s school counseling and community counseling programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), an independent agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Closing the Achievement Gap In June, the program hosted 230 school counselors from 65 Nebraska communities at the 3rd Annual School Counselor Academy, a partnership with the Nebraska Department of Education. As educators essential to the success of all students and critical to individual student plans, school counselors focused on the use of data to address performance gaps in student achievement. The event stirred a sense of excitement as counselors designed plans for their schools to collect, interpret and share data that will make a direct impact on daily practice in their schools. Other community service includes the Fall 2005 placement of more than 30 school counseling candidates in area K- 12 schools. These candidates completed a 700-hour practicum sequence at each of their sites. While working with youth in their respective schools, UNO candidates offer small group counseling, classroom group guidance lessons and individual counseling, supporting the overall academic success of every child. A Clinic in the Community The Department continues to deliver innovative teaching approaches through its Community Counseling Clinic, offering low-cost services Counselors engaged in discussion at the 3rd Annual School Counselor Academy including individual, marriage, family and group counseling. Assistance is available at no cost to UNO students, and for a small fee to Omaha-area citizens. Professors and licensed mental health practitioners supervise and support students in their beginning TAP Prepares Professionals to Be Teachers The participants in the Teacher Academy Project (TAP) bring a unique point of view to the classroom. As seasoned professionals—many who have made a career in the business world— they offer students special insight. Julie Kemp worked in accounting for 20 years, but never forgot about the notion of becoming a teacher. Reading an article about TAP in the newspaper was the nudge she needed to go back to school. “I was at a crossroads in my job,” she says. “I loved the firm I worked for, but I was working seasonally and my kids were getting older. I knew I needed something that was mine.” Kemp became a member of the 2001-2002 TAP class. After completing the program, she was offered a position at Millard North High School in Omaha. Today, she teaches five classes in business, accounting and marketing. “I work far more hours as a teacher than I did as a CPA,” she notes. But the rewards are worth it. “The students love to hear real-world experience and I get to see how incredible these teenagers are every day.” experience in the clinic. UNO Community Counseling candidates later complete advanced practicum and internship that serves dozens of metro area mental health facilities. Bringing Aid to Those in Need In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Jeannette Seaberry and Dr. Paul Barnes represented the College of Education’s effort to support the American Red Cross disaster relief effort. The professors served for two weeks as volunteer crisis counselors, working in the affected Alabama and Mississippi areas. Dr. Barnes worked in a shelter in the Biloxi-Gulfport area as one of two mental health workers providing support to 150 survivors. Dr. Seaberry’s work (see article, page 4) included providing basic essentials to evacuees in Alabama and Mississippi. Thinking About a Second Career in the Classroom? The Teacher Academy Project (TAP) is a secondary education certification program for individuals who have earned an undergraduate degree and want to be teachers. Candidates must hold a degree in a major related to a secondary (grades 7-12) teaching subject areas (such as mathematics, business, foreign language or science). This one-year, fast-track experience was established between UNO and the Metropolitan Omaha Educational Consortium (MOEC). Since TAP began, more than 100 candidates have participated in the program.
