Fulfilling our Pledge
Successes
In 2007, the Foundation made a 10-year pledge to invest
$400 million to build 100,000 homes.
With the help of our associate-led volunteer program, Team Depot, and our
partners, we met and exceeded that goal, six years ahead of schedule. At the
end of 2010, the Foundation had supported the building of 150,000 homes in
just four years.
We are proud of the work we’ve done, but more importantly, we are thrilled
that 150,000 families now have an affordable place to call home – and the
resulting impact will last for years and even generations to come.
We capped an incredible four years with a number of noteworthy
accomplishments in 2010 alone:
• Provided cash and in-kind donations exceeding $79.5 million
($36.3 million cash; $43.3 million in-kind) to more than 5,600 nonprofit
organizations nationwide.
• Supported housing development organizations with grants for the creation
and preservation of more than 7,500 affordable housing units.
• Planted or restored more than 250,000 trees.
• Donated more than $43 million in products from the 1,100 Home Depot
stores to nonprofit partners impacting over 78,000 homes resulting in the
diversion of 14,433 tons from landfills.
• Matched more than $5 million in charitable contributions.
• Built 33 KaBOOM! Playgrounds
Fulfilling our Pledge
Nonprofit Partners
The Home Depot Foundation’s success in building 150,000
homes since 2007 is due largely to the strength and
commitment of our nonprofit partners.
We’ve had the privilege of working with many of the country’s leading housing
non-profit organizations – Enterprise Community Partners, Habitat for Humanity
International, Housing Assistance Council (HAC), NeighborWorks America and
Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) – to make a real difference for
people, neighborhoods and communities – with a focus on building affordable
homes that are healthy and energy efficient.
When we first started, green building was not really part of the affordable
building equation. Through our work with these incredible nonprofits, however,
we’ve shown that making affordable housing healthy and environmentally
friendly is a good near-term and long-term financial option.
> Click to take a closer look at our partnership with Habitat for
Humanity International.
But we haven’t stopped at the lot line of the homes we’ve built with our
partners. We’ve also invested in supporting the creation of sustainable cities
through the Sustainable Cities Institute (SCI). SCI is proving that cities can
successfully deal with financial, social and environmental issues facing them
through thoughtful design, land use and construction.
We wish our national partners continued success in their missions – building
healthy homes for working families.
Fulfilling our Pledge
Featured Partner: Habitat for Humanity
The Home Depot Foundation and Habitat for Humanity have worked
together in many ways over the years, from coordinating volunteers to
build homes to responding to natural disasters together.
For instance, the Foundation and Home Depot suppliers worked with Habitat to produce 10,000 shelter kits for
those affected by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and we sponsored the 25th Annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter
Work Project, framing 48 homes along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In addition, in just the last two years, we’ve
worked closely with hundreds of local Habitat affiliates to fulfill their needs:
• 115 affiliates have received $1 million in grants and gift cards from The Home Depot and
The Home Depot Foundation.
• More than 150 affiliates have received $8.5 million in donated product through our
Framing Hope Product Donation Program.
On a broader scale, The Home Depot Foundation and Habitat for Humanity International joined forces in 2008 to
launch Partners in Sustainable Building, a five-year $30 million green building initiative aimed at helping Habitat
affiliates in the United States incorporate sustainable building practices in 5,000 green homes. Selected Habitat
affiliates are granted $3,000 for each home built to Energy Star standards and up to $5,000 for each home built
to a higher green standard.
During the partnership thus far, The Home Depot Foundation has worked with more than 175 Habitat affiliates to
build 2,500 energy efficient, affordable homes. Behind these impressive numbers are the families whose lives have
been changed by living in a healthy home that actually saves them money. It’s the experience of the families that
motivates us:
• A homeowner in Rushford, Minnesota reported that her heating bill averaged only $2.50 per day during January.
• After months of 100+ degree summer temperatures, a homeowner in Grayson County, Texas reported that her
highest electric bill was only $100.
• In St. Louis, a homeowner saved so much in utility bills that she was able to purchase everything her children
needed for the new school year, an annual expense she could not previously afford.
Through Partners in Sustainable Building, The Home Depot Foundation and Habitat for Humanity have together
proven that building homes that are efficient and healthy – homes that are “green” – makes financial sense, even
for very low income families. In fact, we’ve shown that they are the families for whom it makes the most sense.
It’s just common sense, good economics and good construction.
Framing Hope
The Framing Hope Product Donation Program, a collaborative
effort of The Home Depot, The Home Depot Foundation and
Gifts In Kind International, distributes unsold products and
excess retail inventory to nonprofit organizations.
Framing Hope matches The Home Depot stores with local nonprofit
organizations that receive much needed home improvement supplies to support
their charitable efforts. Many nonprofits use the donated materials to address
housing needs of low-to-moderate income homeowners, veterans, seniors and
others in need. An added benefit: these products are spared from landfills.
Since the program began in 2008, we’ve donated $100 million of product,
impacting 178,000 homes and diverting 35,000 tons of waste from landfills.
> Click to read the press release.
While the numbers are eye-opening, the nonprofits and the families helped tell
the story best.
Team Depot
If you’ve ever been in a Home Depot store, you know that our
associates wear orange aprons. It’s become the iconic symbol
of home improvement know how. But our associates aren’t just
using their skills in our stores. They are volunteering their time
and talents every day through Team Depot, our associate-led
volunteer force.
Centered around company store locations, Team Depot partners with local
nonprofits to provide volunteer support and home improvement supplies to
hundreds of community building projects annually. In 2010, Team Depot
completed nearly 1,600 projects nationwide.
Celebration of Service
For over 30 years, our associates have worked alongside their
neighbors to make their communities a better place. From the
time The Home Depot’s very first store opened in 1979, giving
back to communities has been one of our core values.
September is Celebration of Service month at The Home Depot, and last
year’s theme was “30 Days of Green.” Team Depot volunteers completed
more than 100 volunteer projects nationwide during the month. From building
playgrounds to planting trees to refurbishing homes and community centers,
Home Depot associates used their DIY talents to make a lasting physical impact
in their communities.
Each project followed simple green guidelines to reduce waste, use
environmentally-friendly materials, use less water and reduce energy use on the
day of the project and into the future. The goal was to ensure that what was left
behind would continue to make a positive contribution to the local community
for years to come.
Supplier Events
Each year, The Home Depot Foundation hosts several
Community Building Invitationals, events designed specifically
to allow the Company’s suppliers to volunteer alongside
Home Depot associates to renovate and build homes.
It’s a fun, yet truly meaningful, opportunity for suppliers and vendors to support
the work of The Home Depot Foundation. In 2010, our Community Building
Invitationals produced significant results: more than 40 homes were built,
over three acres of yard were landscaped and entire neighborhoods were
transformed. From Glidden, Bali and Cooper Lighting to Scotts, Weber
and Coca Cola, our vendors are a very important part of the success of
The Home Depot Foundation.
In addition to rolling up their sleeves to help, more than 1,000 suppliers also
contribute financially to the Foundation. Whether through a financial donation
or time spent volunteering at a community project, their contributions are
essential to our ability to accomplish our goals.
New Challenges
New Focus
The Home Depot has always supported the men and women
who have fought for our country. In fact, we have almost
36,000 veterans working for us and an estimated 1,500
associates on military leave as they serve on active duty in
our nation’s armed forces.
That’s why it’s a natural fit for The Home Depot Foundation to
focus on giving back to those who have given of themselves
for our country.
And we’ve decided to do it in a big way: over the next three
years, we will donate $30 million to improve the homes and
facilities that serve our nation’s veterans.
New Challenges
Veterans at Risk
The number of veterans who face critical housing needs is
staggering. The statistics paint a compelling picture:
• An estimated 136,334 veterans spent at least one night in a homeless
shelter or transition housing program during 2009.
(U.S. Dept. of H.U.D. / U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs)
• Almost 43,000 military personnel have been wounded in Operations
Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. (Department of Defense)
• Over half (52%) of homeless veterans are disabled.
(U.S. Dept. of H.U.D. / U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs)
• January 2011, the jobless rate was 15.2% among young veterans of the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
• In 2010, over 20,000 military members and veterans faced foreclosure,
the highest number since 2003. (U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs)
