WATERCOLOUR Watercolour is both an artistic medium and a stylistic approach. Arguably seen as one of the simplest and earliest forms of artistic MEDIA, watercolour can be traced back to Palaeolithic age wall paintings. In a modern context, watercolour is still used to describe the suspension of pigment in water, primarily on paper. It’s this tactile, hands on quality that is drawing a new generation of contemporary focus. Watercolour is particularly effective in expressive subtle effects of light and atmosphere. Its softness and delicacy make it particularly well suited for illustration. Recent appearances have seen the effect being used by cutting edge designers Acne Studios as well as in the Spring/Summer 2014 collection of Chanel. The delicacy of the medium and its ability to portray subtle tonal variations mark it out against the harder-edged futurism and monochromatic palette of many of the other key trends.
