Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association Incorporated Advancing and Protecting the Interests of Cattle Producers in the Northern Territory Grazing Land Management MLA Beef Up Forum – NTCA Annual Conference 2007 Key Messages • Monitor paddock land condition with ‘ABCD’ framework – land condition is a key profit driver in the short and long term • Monitor liveweight performance from paddocks (kg per km 2 and kg per head-1) to provide an indicator of animal and land productivity • Manage paddock stocking rates to achieve 20-25% utilisation over the long term • Manage paddock stocking rates to maintain ground cover levels above 40% going into the early wet season • Maximise use of feed across the landscape by having no more than 5-6 km between water points and paddocks no larger than about 40 km 2 • Implement wet season spelling using paddock subdivision, paddock rotation or strategic burning to maintain pasture condition • Use rainfall and pasture growth probabilities to assist stocking decisions prior to the start and at the end of the growing season • Use prescribed burning where and when appropriate to manage tree-grass balance, reduce wildfire hazard, improve pasture quality and manage grazing distribution • Leave some high value areas remote from water as biodiversity refuges and monitor use of preferred patches, riparian areas and sensitive land within grazing distance of water • Focus on weeds prevention through strict property hygiene, and treat new infestations early and strategically Best practice indicators • At least 80% of paddock maintained in A (good) or B (fair) condition in most years • Paddock liveweight turnoff (kg per km 2 and kg per head monitored annually in relation to paddock condition • Dry season stocking rates guided by forage cover and standing dry matter targets calculated at the end of growing season budget • Over 80% of paddocks maintained with ground cover above 40% at all times (for most land types). • At least 10-20% of property spelled during the wet season each year • At least 80% of paddocks within 2.5-3km of water • At least 10-20% of the property managed with prescribed fire each year (dependent on land type, burning objective and average rainfall) • Infrastructure plan developed with current and optimal water placement and paddock sizes • Paddock level management plans describing stocking, spelling, burning and weed management completed in early growing season • Weed hygiene protocol implemented for vehicles, hay and cattle entering property Use prescribed burning where and when appropriate to manage tree-grass balance, reduce wildfire hazard, improve pasture quality and manage grazing distribution.
