New Miss USA cites Audrey
Hepburn as role model
(AP) — The nation’s newest Miss USA
winner is a Rhode Island cellist who
describes herself as a nerd and aspires
to be more like Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn.
Olivia Culpo shares Hepburn’s European heritage
and dark brown hair and soon they will share something
else. Culpo said after winning her crown Sunday night that
she plans to go to Tiffany & Co. in New York and recreate
Hepburn’s iconic opening scene from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
Culpo, a Boston University sophomore, will take a year
off from her studies to tackle her duties as Miss USA and
represent the nation in the 61st Miss Universe contest in
December.
Culpo strutted across the stage in a lilac bikini, then
donned a flowing fuchsia gown with sparkly trim around
her waist and décolletage. After making it to the final five,
Culpo voiced her support for transgender beauty queens
during the make-or-break interview round.
Culpo said she was short and chubby as a girl, but
blossomed after a growth spurt. She spent her summers
at band camp after learning to play the cello in second
grade. Her parents are also musicians, and her love for
music saw her perform at Symphony Hall in Boston and
Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Culpo is a 2010 graduate of St. Mary Academy Bay
View, an all-girls Catholic school in Riverside, where she
was a member of the National Honor Society. She said
she comes from a big, Italian family and speaks some
Italian. On her Twitter account, she describes herself as a
nerd and model.
“I was just so surprised, so shocked, so honored to be
there,” she said of her win.
ROAD TRIP
Blast off into 51st year
BY KIM COOL
FEATURES EDITOR
Fifty years and counting — the Kennedy
Space Center welcomes visitors to its yearlong
anniversary event.
My favorite space ride anywhere is the center’s
Shuttle Launch Experience, which takes visitors
on a joyride into space. The final reward is an
incredible view of the “final frontier.”
Before and after the ride of rides, there are plenty
of rockets to see, opportunities to view
rocket launches from the Cape Canaveral Air
Force Station, and the chance to tour the 525-foot
tall Vehicle Assembly Building. Apollo rockets
and the Space Shuttle ships were assembled in
what is considered to be one of the world’s largest
buildings.
Get up close to an authentic Saturn rocket and
learn all about America’s space program. This
summer there are several opportunities to view
rocket launches.
The center’s “Up-Close Tour” is being extended
to the end of the year because of the 50th anniversary
celebration. Until this tour was created
last year, visitors could only view the Vehicle
Assembly Building from the bus tour that takes
visitors around the center. Even from a distance,
that building is enormous.
In addition to the “Up-Close Tour,” Delaware
North Companies (Space Center operator) is
working out plans with the national space agency
to operate several other unique tours of the facility
— especially those aspects not open to the
public in the heyday of the agency.
The switch from government space flights to
a commercial program run by private sector
companies is under way. An Atlas V rocket
with an onboard satellite was launched May 4.
Next was a “demonstration launch” of a Falcon
9 rocket by SpaceX, a commercial venture.
That rocket docked with the International
Space Station and was the first mission to the
station by a commercial company. It recently
returned to Earth after delivering more than
1,000 pounds of food and other supplies to the
space station.
“There’s an opportunity to see fascinating aspects
of the space program that few people have
seen," visitor complex chief Bill Moore said.
As things change over from a government-run
program to one run by private companies, this
could be an excellent time to visit. With a little
luck, visitors might even manage to be there at
the right time to catch a launch.
It is the 50th anniversary year of the Launch
Operations Center. The name was later changed
to honor President John F. Kennedy, who pushed
for America to be the first to land a man on the
moon.
As visitors will learn while there, the enormous
piece of land used for the facility has also
become what is most likely the country’s largest
Audubon sanctuary within the 140,000-acre
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. There are
five hiking trails and a seven-mile driving tour of
the refuge.
Adjacent to the space center is the Astronaut
Hall of Fame, which has its own hours and separate
admission fee,
Tied to the anniversary celebration are some
special deals such as a $50 annual pass and
a 50th anniversary admission package. Two
special offers allow guests to save up to 30
percent on admission, food and merchandise
plus secure viewing access for launches. For
the details, visit http://kennedyspacecenter.
com/annual-pass-offer.aspx and look for the
50th anniversary admission package and the
$50 annual pass information.
Plan a day for a typical tour but spend time
at the Web site to plan what is best for you and
your family. There is plenty to see and do, including
occasional overnight camping opportunities
and launches.
The Kennedy Space Center is located at
S.R. 405, Kennedy Space Center. Directions: Allow
approximately three hours from Sun papers’
area via Interstates 75 (exit 261) and 4 (exit 72)
to S.R. 528 (Beeline Expressway) to S.R. 407 at
the space center and Titusville. Follow S.R. 407
to S.R. 405. Turn right and follow signs to center
about 9 miles ahead.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
TASTEBUDS
Amigo’s Restaurant & Cantina
BY DEBBIE FLESSNER
SUN CORRESPONDENT
When Bob and Peggy Laigle moved down
to the Rotonda area from Connecticut
two years ago, they envisioned a true
retirement in their future. But it was not to be.
“I was retired and going stir crazy,” Bob Laigle
said. Starting a restaurant “seemed like a good
thing to do at the time.”
The Laigles began renting the space on
Cape Haze Drive that was formerly occupied by
Daniels Steak and Seafood. They called their new
place Amigo’s Restaurant & Cantina. Though the
Laigles do have a cook, Bob Laigle does quite a
bit of the cooking himself.
“Chiles Rellenos are my specialty,” he said.
“I learned to make it from a friend (restaurant
owner) up north. Some of my best recipes I have
to attribute to him.”
Because Amigo’s is fairly new and a bit off
the beaten path, it is still a well-kept secret. The
tourists had no problem finding it during its first
season, but since the snowbirds have now flown
back home, Laigle is hoping more locals will
discover his restaurant and love it, too.
“When we got to December, January and
February, we really began to boom,” he said.
“The snowbirds were fantastic, and now we’re
drawing more and more local people in.”
One of the ways he has been achieving
that is by running a variety of weeknight
specials. Monday nights, he sells wings for 35
cents each and pitchers of BudLite for
$4.95. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, he
features “T&T Night,” which consists of $1.50 tacos
and $2.50 margaritas all day and evening. Wednesdays,
he offers fajitas at $3 off the regular price.
Amigo’s has a full bar and a full liquor license,
and because of that it offers a daily two-for-one
Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Absolutely everything
served at the bar is eligible for the discount.
Still, the true star of the restaurant is the food.
“Our biggest sellers are the Chiles Rellenos
— we have had numerous people saying how
excellent it is,” Laigle said. “The seafood burritos,
enchiladas and fajitas are all very popular, too.”
Laigle said that everything he serves at
Amigo’s is made fresh daily and cooked to order.
“That way, if anyone wants a specialty or a
recipe altered, we can do it,” he said. “We make
all of our food with mild spice, then we can spice
it up if you want.”
The free tortilla chips and salsa arrive at your
table soon after you do. Both are homemade and
freshly created at the restaurant. Laigle said that
both are very popular menu items, and that he
probably goes through three to four gallons of
salsa a day.
One of the things Laigle takes special pride in
is his developing relationship with the local community.
For example, though he is not open on
Sundays, he is opening up Amigo’s this Sunday
for free for a group of women who want to host
a baby shower for their friend. They couldn’t find
any affordable space in town and asked him to let
them have the shower in his restaurant. They are
even bringing in their own food, and also asking
him to make a couple of platters of his own food
Amigo’s has been open in Rotonda West since October, 2011
SUN PHOTOS BY DEBBIE FLESSNER
Amigo’s Restaurant & Cantina seats about 152 people, with plenty of space for special events.
for them.
phone number is 941-698-2446, and the website
“I’m really trying to build a rapport with the address is www.amigosrestaurantrotonda.yolasite.com.
It is open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday
local people here,” Laigle said. “We are really a
family type of restaurant.”
IN THE KITCHEN
Chef Mike Elmore
delights at Gulf View Grill
BY DEBBIE FLESSNER
SUN CORRESPONDENT
If there was ever a restaurant that had a
fitting name, it is the Gulf View Grill. Right
across the street from Englewood Beach, the
restaurant has stunning views for diners, both
inside behind the expansive glass and out on the
front deck.
Chef Mike Elmore, along with his father and
stepmother, Keyes and Marge, and his brother,
Chef Dave, owns the restaurant. It is truly a family
business.
“I have 30 years in the restaurant business,”
Chef Mike said. “Between my brother and myself,
we have over 70 years.”
Originally from New Jersey, the family moved
to the Englewood area in 1984, except for Dave,
who followed in 2005. The Gulf View Grill was
not the first Englewood restaurant they owned
together.
“My folks came down on vacation in 1984, and
saw potential in the Lock and Key (also on Englewood
Beach),” Chef Mike said. “I came down and
opened that restaurant with them.”
Later on, the Elmores sold that restaurant
and bought the former Beach’s nightclub,
changing the name and space to the Gulf View
Grill.
When he was in high school in New Jersey,
Chef Mike gained restaurant experience in the
back of the house, working in three different
establishments. By the time he moved to
Florida, he was just a couple of years out of
high school and eager to learn all aspects of
the business.
“A lot of people that come through your restaurant,
I don’t care who they are, you
learn something from everybody,” he said.
“And with today’s technology, if you have the
raw (culinary) skills, it’s amazing what you
can learn on the Internet and on TV. The most
important part of the recipe is the method of
the process.”
Although its menu does offer steak and poultry
dishes, because of its proximity to the source, the
restaurant specializes in fresh seafood.
“People come to Englewood and they expect
good, fresh local seafood,” Chef Mike said. “I
always buy fresh Florida produce and local fish,
when they are available.”
Of the different types of fish that he serves, the
one people most request at the Gulf View Grill is
not one you would find swimming in local waters.
“The Chilean Sea Bass is very popular,” Chef
Mike said. “We’ve gotten rave reviews and magazine
articles written about it.”
In their recipe for the dish, Chef Mike and Chef
Dave encrust the fish with parmesan and garlic,
sauté it, and serve it with a tomato and caper
lemon-butter sauce.
The Gulf View Grill seats 175 people in its
dining room, and an additional 175 in a banquet
room. Because it has all of that water-view space
available, the restaurant plays host to quite a
few functions, from weddings and receptions to
corporate meetings.
Mike Kenny is the event coordinator, who takes
care of whatever the function may require, from
start to finish.
“He does a fantastic job of accommodating
people’s needs,” Chef Mike said. “He is really
good at it.”
For Father’s Day, on June 17, Chef Mike
suggests making reservations at the Gulf View
Grill for your special lunch or dinner. He plans to
grill some delicious steaks for the occasion, so
you can sit with your dad or grandfather, enjoy
a wonderful meal and admire the breathtaking
scenery.
Come by Bobcat Trail Golf Course in North Port and you’ll understand why they say, “It’s a BEAUTIFUL day at Bobcat Trail.”
The 6,748-yard, par 71 course was originally designed by architect Lee Singletary and former PGA cha mpion Bob Tway. It’s one of the few courses in Sarasota County to
have been given a 4.5 star rating by Golf Digest. The facility has been fully renovated, from the gr eens and bunkers to the enlarged clubhouse. Even the golf cars were updated
and outfitted with GPS. So while your ball may get lost, you’ll always know where you are at Bobcat Trail.
“Our course layout is one of the best you’ll find,” said Bruce Harris, General Manager and one of th e golf pros at Bobcat Trail. “It has very large, undulating greens with
hybrid Bermuda grass and plenty of wildlife.” On any given day, while playing “The Cat,” golfers mig ht be treated to the sight of osprey, eagles, otters, bobcats, all kinds of
bird life as well as alligators sunning themselves on the banks near the water spots, said Harris.
Bobcat Trail is a semi-private club, which means it has both memberships and open tee times availabl e to the public. Many of its 220 members live in the beautiful, gated
Bobcat Trail community that surrounds the course.
PGA instructors are happy to give lessons to beginners who want to start the game or more advanced p layers who want to improve a part of their game.
The club actively welcomes younger players, too. Their Junior Golf program, for kids aged six and up , starts June 7 and goes for eight weeks, on Thursdays. Several pro
instructors will help the Juniors learn the game.
Before or after play, The Grill Room has snacks, sandwiches, soups and salads. For a quick bite, try spicy wings, Famous Nachos or fried green beans. For lunch, the soup and
sandwich special and the chopped salad – you choose your ingredients and have it chopped for you -- are hugely popular.
Bobcat Trail offers special pricing depending on the time of day. Morning play is $45, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. is $35, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. is $27 and after 4 p.m. rates drop to $20.
Prices are reviewed monthly and are subject to change.
Tee times can be made up to seven days in advance, and can be booked 24 hours a day at http://www.bo bcattrailgc.com . For questions, to register for the Junior Golf summer
program or for other information, see the website or call 941-429-0500. Bobcat Trail is located at 1 350 Bobcat Trail in North Port.
