In April she got a kidney transplant.“My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!” she told Seventeen, which features her on its June/July cover. Shesaid she knew she could always count on her family forsupport, but “it’s also the families that you create outsideof your family. And you really find out what kind of peopleyou’re friends with.” It was, she said, an eye-openingexperience.Though she was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia atage 9, Hyland had to wait for her painful, fatigue-inducingcondition to deteriorate before a kidney transplant was anoption, according to Monday’s “GMA” report. That meantsome rough times on the job for the child of two actors whohas been working since she debuted as Howard Stern’sdaughter in “Private Parts,” filmed when she was 5.“If you’re sick you still go to work and in between takesyou sit down or you lay your head down or something,”Hyland told “GMA,” explaining that she had dealt with herhealth needs in character.“I try to make it so that Haley’s always sitting down. Ifyou notice she’s sitting down a lot, texting, or like leaningon something, texting.” After surgery, she said, she alsowas able to lean on Julie Bowen, her on-screen mom, whoswung by to help with things like cleaning her apartment. The show is on hiatus now, giving Hyland months torecover.Marie MerchantLet’s Go!Features EditorWhat’s going onThe 18th Annual Peace River Cleanup will be held from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the The Nav-A-Gator Grill& Marina, 9700 Southwest Riverview Circle, Arcadia. 6 Let’s Go! E/N/C/V May 30-June 5, 2012ROAD TRIPExperience hurricanes and more at ImaginariumBY KIM COOLFEATURES EDITORWith the potential for experiencinga real hurricane in this areasometime in the coming months,a visit to the Imaginarium Science Museumin Fort Myers could be a good idea.Although the museum is geared to the 2to 12-year-old crowd, its hurricane experienceand related exhibits should be mustseesfor anyone living in Florida, whichfrom now through the end of Novembermight also be called “Hurricane Country.”Begin with the museum‘s hurricanesimulator. Children and adults sit in thesimulator and hang on to their hats aswinds almost reach the level of a CategoryI hurricane, about 30 to 40 miles per hour.At that speed, unsecured trailer homescan be moved off foundations, loose roofshingles can go flying and there could bepower outages. Few people other thanhurricane hunters would want to be outsidein a real storm with winds higher than that.Back in 2004, I interviewed a man whowas in a house in Punta Gorda that wasdestroyed during Hurricane Charley. Hewalked out of the house during the lull thatcomes halfway through the storm and asthe winds kicked up in the other directionwithin less than 10 minutes, he managed tomake his way to a neighbor’s house. Thatsaved his life during what turned out to be aCategory 4 storm in that area. The neighbor’shouse was newer and better able towithstand the wind.In the museum’s hurricane experienceexhibit area, visitors can learn ways toincrease the strength and safety of theirhomes thanks to a partnership betweenthe museum and Storm Smart Industries. For those who need some extra encouragement, the exhibit includes informationabout the “pre- and post-effects of a hurricane”as well as how to track such stormsby using their home computers.Included in the display are samples ofimpact-resistant doors and windows, clearstorm panels and a “storm-catcher rollingscreen. While at the Imaginarium visitors arelikely to enjoy the touch tank area andsome 60 additional exhibits and live animalencounters.Opening on June 8 is “Be the Dinosaur,”449850HARD ROCK - $20 PER PERSON$25 Free Play - $5 Food VoucherThursdays & Sundays in M ay6/3, 6/7, 6/10, 6/14, 6/17, 6/21, 6/24, 6/28IMMOKALEE - $20 PER PERSON$30 Free Play - $5 Food VoucherM onday & Tuesdays in April & M ay6/4,6/5,6/11,6/12,6/18,6/19,6/25,6/26SUN PHOTO BY MARIE MERCHANTExhibits display live fish, sharks, turtles, swans, and iguanas.PHOTO COURTESY OF THE IMAGINARIUMAfter experiencing a hurricane at the Imaginariumhead upstairs to the Hurricane desk to learnhow to prepare your home for the big one.a traveling exhibit that will remain on viewthrough Sept. 3. Cloistered in quiet out of respectfor the dead, the mummies and other funeraryobjects are shown encased in glass which givesthe observer an amazing and close-up look at thelong-preserved dead.Leading the list of exhibits is the Detmoldchild, a Peruvian mummy that predates Egypt’spharaoh King Tut by more than 3,000 years. Oneof the more unusual objects that greets visitorsas they enter the exhibit is a howler monkey fromArgentina with a fierce expression and a peculiarfeather skirt and headdress. Also on display are some unusually recentmummies, dating back only to the 17th and 18thcenturies. One is the remains of a HungarianBaron Von Holz, a German soldier who died inthe 1600s, who was buried in his best boots; anda trio called the Vac mummies who were a familyfrom Hungary who died in the 1700s. Tests haveshown that the man, woman and infant child diedof tuberculosis. They were found in a long-forgottenchurch crypt in 1994.One of the highlights of the exhibit is a remarkablypreserved pre-Columbian mummy of a tattooedwoman who was locked in time in a seatedposition. She has long, flowing hair and stillwears an amazingly preserved multicolored robe. She was found in the Peruvian desert, believedto be the driest on earth. Scientists have yet todetermine the meaning of the tattoos on her faceor on her chest. The exhibit is arranged in a series of chambersdraped in fabric that bring the exhibit an etherealfeeling. An 18-hole, par-60 executivecourse, Blue Heron Pines is semi-private, offering both memberships and pay-as-you-go daily fees. B oth walkers and carts are permitted at all times of the day.“It’s an exciting, fun track to play, yet it’s easy to walk it,” said Bill Itschner, manager of the course and surrounding community. An abundance of water throughout thecourse makes it both challenging and beautiful. Maintaining the course’s rustic, natural beauty is something Itschner has worked hard to achieve.Like other area courses, Blue Heron Pines was hit hard by Hurricane Charley in 2004. But unlike oth er courses that had all the damaged trees removed, Itschner insisted onkeeping the bent and downed trees that were still living. The result is a course with trees that are natural wonders in their own right. Some are so bent you can’t help but know which way the hurricane blew. Others stretch acrossthe ground, determined trees with winding trunks exploding into robust foliage.Purple jacarandas surround creeks and ravines, while several stone formations add to the eclectic mi x.Blue Heron Pines sits in the midst of a community by the same name. The original, nine-hole course was called Emu Lakes, and the community Casa del Mar. While manycourses have alligators on their grounds, Emu Lakes actually had emus.Thirteen years ago, American Land Lease bought the community and golf course, renamed it, and added the front nine holes. Three greens have been rebuilt since HurricaneCharley hit, and two more will be rebuilt this year.“It’s an ongoing process that will continue until all the greens have been rebuilt,” said Itschner. The clubhouse was also rebuilt and expanded to 9,000 square feet, with a commercial kitchen, deck, g ame rooms and meeting rooms added around the original centerclubhouse. In addition to the golf course, the community includes shuffleboard, horse shoes and an aqua driving range that utilizes floater golf balls. Lessons are alsoavailable.Blue Heron Pines golf course is located at 29225 S. Jones Loop Road in Punta Gorda. For information or tee times call 941-637-6191.446913
