E/N/C/V June 6-12, 2012 ROAD TRIP Blast off into 51st year BY KIM COOL FEATURES EDITOR Fifty years and counting — the Kennedy Space Center welcomes visitors to its yearlong anniversary event. My favorite space ride anywhere is the center’s Shuttle Launch Experience, which takes visitors on a joyride into space. The final reward is an incredible view of the “final frontier.” Before and after the ride of rides, there are plenty of rockets to see, opportunities to view rocket launches from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and the chance to tour the 525-foot tall Vehicle Assembly Building. Apollo rockets and the Space Shuttle ships were assembled in what is considered to be one of the world’s largest buildings. Get up close to an authentic Saturn rocket and learn all about America’s space program. This summer there are several opportunities to view rocket launches. The center’s “Up-Close Tour” is being extended to the end of the year because of the 50th anniversary celebration. Until this tour was created last year, visitors could only view the Vehicle Assembly Building from the bus tour that takes visitors around the center. Even from a distance, that building is enormous. In addition to the “Up-Close Tour,” Delaware North Companies (Space Center operator) is working out plans with the national space agency to operate several other unique tours of the facility — especially those aspects not open to the public in the heyday of the agency. The switch from government space flights to a commercial program run by private sector companies is under way. An Atlas V rocket with an onboard satellite was launched May 4. Next was a “demonstration launch” of a Falcon 9 rocket by SpaceX, a commercial venture. That rocket docked with the International Space Station and was the first mission to the station by a commercial company. It recently returned to Earth after delivering more than 1,000 pounds of food and other supplies to the space station. “There’s an opportunity to see fascinating aspects of the space program that few people have seen," visitor complex chief Bill Moore said. As things change over from a government-run program to one run by private companies, this could be an excellent time to visit. With a little luck, visitors might even manage to be there at the right time to catch a launch. It is the 50th anniversary year of the Launch Operations Center. The name was later changed to honor President John F. Kennedy, who pushed for America to be the first to land a man on the moon. As visitors will learn while there, the enormous piece of land used for the facility has also become what is most likely the country’s largest Audubon sanctuary within the 140,000-acre Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. There are five hiking trails and a seven-mile driving tour of the refuge. Adjacent to the space center is the Astronaut Hall of Fame, which has its own hours and separate admission fee, Tied to the anniversary celebration are some special deals such as a $50 annual pass and a 50th anniversary admission package. Two special offers allow guests to save up to 30 percent on admission, food and merchandise plus secure viewing access for launches. Plan a day for a typical tour but spend time at the Web site to plan what is best for you and your family. There is plenty to see and do, including occasional overnight camping opportunities and launches. The Kennedy Space Center is located at S.R. 405, Kennedy Space Center. Directions: Allow approximately three hours from Sun papers’ area via Interstates 75 (exit 261) and 4 (exit 72) to S.R. 528 (Beeline Expressway) to S.R. 407 at the space center and Titusville. Follow S.R. 407 to S.R. 405. Turn right and follow signs to center about 9 miles ahead. More than 150 artisans and craftspeople from some 30 states will gather there for the 11th annual St. Armands Circle Craft Festival. The juried show will feature handmade items made in America. Many are one-of-a-kind. Crafters will be on-site during the entire show to talk with customers about their pottery, jewelry, paintings, handmade clothing, and folk art. Items are priced from $3 to $3,000, according to the announcement from show organizer American Craft Endeavors. Denny Pezzin brings one-man show to Southwest Florida BY SHIRLEY GEORGE SUN CORRESPONDENT Denny Pezzin’s one-man show wowed audiences in Los Angeles, and Orange and San Diego counties in California for 30 years. For two years, he had gigs at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. Since moving to Southwest Florida in 2011, the versatile singer and musician is rockin’ at various local venues. “My wife Virginia and I started making plans to relocate to Florida in 2008, when my mother passed away,” Pezzin said. “We love living near my father. Life is truly too short to let time pass without being with your family.” Pezzin started his professional career in Toledo, Ohio, in 1977, and then moved to California. Pezzin performed five nights a week for 50 weeks a year at Capistrano’s Lounge in the Embassy Suites in Santa Ana, Calif., from 1993 to 2009. Pezzin’s guitar playing, keyboard abilities, singing and humor entitled him to be voted “The Orange County Register’s Lounge Entertainer of the Year” for three years in a row. Besides singing the songs of Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder and many others, Pezzin utilizes props and costumes that enhance his performances.
