It gives you kind of a gauge to go by,” Thompson said. “You get to see what you need to work on early in the year, plus, out of our first eight games, five of them are at home and it continues that trend throughout the schedule.” On December 20, the Lady Dawgs will travel to Caverna to participate Alex Beard - Junior in the Caverna Holiday Classic, which will be the first of two holiday tournaments for Clinton County. Following Christmas, Clinton County will host the Best of the Lakes Classic and according to Thompson, it is something the Lady Dawgs hope to do every year. “We got worn down last year simply because we traveled so much. Every night was going somewhere on a bus and some nights it was consecutive nights on long trips. We went in this year and tried to get the schedule to benefit us,” Thompson said. “Our pre- Christmas tournament, we are traveling to Cave City. We can drive back and forth and spend the night in our own beds. After Christmas (Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic) is something we are really looking forward to. We are hoping it’s a huge success and its something we can build on. The other thing that the fans are going to like about it, is it is made up of local teams.” Thompson said there are five teams in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic including Cumberland County, Pickett County, Clay County, TN, and McCreary Central. “Our marquee game will be on that Friday night against Pickett County,” Thompson said. “A City Florist 201 E. During the tournament, teams will play a “round robin” style of tournament and according to Thompson, the games won’t have to start early in the afternoon, allowing more fans to come out and watch each team play. “I think the earliest game is at 5 p.m.,” Thompson said. “It will be on December 27, 28 and 29. On that Saturday, I think there are some earlier games, but most people are off of work and can come out and watch some basketball.” After New Year’s Day, Clinton County will move into the second half of district play, followed by the 4th Regional All “A” Classic Tournament, which will be held at Lindle Castle Gymnasium. With the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs being the host team, Clinton County will get the first round bye and play the winner of Metcalfe County and Monroe County game on both the girls’ and boys’ sides of the tournament. “That’s an interesting first round game, Monroe and Metcalfe,” Thompson said. “Those are two nice teams going at it. In pre-season rankings, Monroe girls were the top rated team in the All ‘A’ in our region. I would say they are going to be one of the top rated teams in the All ‘A’ state.” Thompson said the Lady Dawgs’ longest road trip of the season will come after the All “A” when the team travels to Russellville to take on the Panthers on January 21, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. “I think we are going to make this game an annual game,” Thompson said. “It’s my understanding that we are going to try to keep it every year on Martin Luther King Day.” Adding Russellville to this year’s schedule will give the Lady Dawgs a chance to see another 4th Region opponent during the season. “There are a lot of teams that we just didn’t see last year,” Thompson said. “I’ve tried to get Warren East and South Warren, but I get tired of driving to Bowling Green every year when they don’t want to return the favor.” Clinton County also added Taylor County to its schedule this season, with both a home Macy Campbell started several games last season as an seventh grader. They divide their schedules up. We are the same way. The way our schedule works out, we have a few games, then we play the district schedule, we play a few more, then we play the second half of the district schedule. All of that is geared up for the end of the year. That’s what I told the girls. When it comes district tournament time you can be 20-0 or 0-20 ... it doesn’t matter. With losing two key seniors last year with Breonia (Thurman) and Veronica (Lowhorn), we have lost significant scoring, but I think we have players who will step up and take up the slack.” During last season’s final game against Russell County, the Lady Bulldogs pulled together and gave the Lady Lakers a scare late in the fourth quarter. Eventually losing 62-48, Russell County extended its lead from the foul line and not from the field. “I told the girls, you are only as good as your last game. If they had went out there and laid an egg then I don’t think people would be excited to see them play this year. I hear a lot of comments that people are excited to watch us play. That’s what we are trying for.” Thompson said this season will look a lot different as far as from the fan’s perspective. “Last year, we were a little conservative,” Thompson said. “This year we are going to open it up a little ... see what we can do. These girls have worked to get better. I don’t know how many coaches could have won six games and been pleased with the effort ... I never have to question these kids’ efforts. We’ve had about three good practices in a row and I don’t see any letting up.” Thompson will have the same look on the bench with his assistant coaches, except for the addition of a new face or two. Jessica (Cummings) Conner, was a Lady Bulldog during what many have considered the best years of Lady Bulldog Bas- ketball. On her playing resume, she was a starter on the team that picked up runners-up honors in the KHSAA State finals against Lexington Catholic, as well as having two All “A” Classic Championship rings. “I think it’s a necessity to have a female around the girls. It’s nothing against Tim (Hicks) and Patrick (Stalcup), but one of the girls came up to me after practice one day and said she felt more comfortable having a female on staff,” Thompson said. “We will still have Tim and Patrick and Bozie York. Bozie does a lot of things that people don’t see. He goes out and helps us get sponsors for the Christmas tournament, scouting tapes and stuff like that. Any night I go on a scouting trip, all I have to do is pick up the phone and he is ready to roll.” At the beginning of the school year, Superintendant Charlotte Bernard brought the entire school district together and hosted a “pep rally” of sorts at the high school. Thompson believes that day will play a huge factor in attendance this winter. “The message wasn’t that it is just Clinton County High School’s team, it’s the whole county’s team,” Thompson said. “That’s what we emphasize everyday with our young girls and the older girls as well. We told them this year that they have to be ambassadors for the basketball team. Not only at the high school, but out in the public as well. Get out and you represent us. We are hoping that if people see a positive influence from the players, how they act, how they behave, how they interact with everyone, that they say ‘I’m going to go and support those kids.’” Looking ahead to the future, Thompson is in direct contact with the feeder program for the Lady Dawgs’ Basketball team. He believes it is essential for every great team to have a great beginning. “It’s a necessity. I wish we had the facilities and opportunity to where the younger girls could come in everyday and not let their seasons end in November,” Thompson said. “I am well pleased with what’s going on with our feeder system. Can we do more? Absolutely. I was informed the other night that I have a group of parent volunteers who are taking first and second graders to Somerset to play in a rec league. It goes back to ‘WE ARE BULLDOGS’ and we are not just the high school team. It’s everybody’s team and those parents who are taking the time to take their kids there or taking them to various camps, that’s all a part of it.” As the season gets underway next Monday at Franklin-Simpson, Thompson is ready and eager to get this season started. “I’m very excited. It’s a new year and when you see the girls and how enthusiastic they are to show up for a practice, you just want them to succeed,” Thompson said. “You can’t wait for it to start so they can see if their hard work has paid off. I really think we will be making steps in the right direction. The Lady Dawgs’ first home game will be Friday, November 30, against the Australian National Team. That game will be a double-header with the Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. A complete schedule can be found elsewhere in this special section.
