Bulldogs will be smaller, but
quicker for 2012-2013 season
Sophomore
Keifer
Dalton
It’s roundball season again and with that
comes a long winter of hoops and sevenyear
head Coach Todd Messer is expecting
nothing shy of a very successful year.
“We have a really challenging schedule
that these kids are going to embark
on this year,” Messer said. “Our
scrimmages will give us a better
idea on player combinations that we
want to use.”
Clinton County has played
Campbellsville and Casey County
in preseason competition and Messer
said the reason he scheduled them was
to have two different types of teams in
terms of what defense his team would
see.
The Clinton County Bulldogs will
kick off its season Monday, November
30 with a road trip to Rockcastle County,
followed by a home game against
the Australian National Team.
“We really jump right into the thick
of things. Over the course of last year,
our kids lived on the road and got some
‘big game’ experience. We are starting
that way this year with the road trip to
Rockcastle County. It a place that is very
difficult to play and against a team with
a lot of experience coming back. It’s going
to be a big challenge for us right off
the bat.”
During the second game of the season,
Clinton County will be at home in the
second game of a double header with
the Lady Dawgs, hosting the Australian
National Team.
Messer said this will be the first test of how his
boys will handle the rebound aspect of the game.
“I thought our rebounding kept us out of the
state tournament last year,” Messer said. “I’m really
looking forward to that game just to see how
we match up with some size.”
Clinton County will then head into the traditional
part of the schedule with a game against
Monroe County followed by the first part of district
play.
GOOD LUCK
LADY BULLDOGS
& BULLDOGS!
From our team to yours!
“The Russell County and
Cumberland County games will
be huge in terms of our standings
at the end of the year,” Messer
said.
Following the first part of
the district competition, Clinton
County will face Somerset,
which, according to Messer, will
be a contender in the 12th Region
this season with a 6’6” post
player who transferred from Mc-
Creary County.
Once again on the schedule
will be the Twin Lakes Holiday
Classic, which Clinton County
has won two years in a row and
will be looking for a third title for
their own tournament.
“We wanted to make sure we
brought in high caliber, athletic
teams who are really going to
be about ball pressure and pressing
in order to get us ready for
the second half of the season,”
Messer said. “Our tournament
will give us a really good idea of
where we are on the state level.
That was the good thing about
our boys last year, being senior
led, they thought they could go
toe to toe with anybody in the
state and that culminated in the
run that got us ranked 12 in the
state.”
After the Twin Lakes Holiday
Classic, Clinton County will
head to northern Kentucky to
compete in the Lloyd Memorial
Classic.
“It will be a great challenge
for us,” Messer said. “We will be
a little diverse in northern Kentucky
because the kids are a little
more physical. I have to see how
our kids respond to where the defence
will test how we play. They
will use a lot of forearms to try
to knock us off our cuts. Whether
we are able to hold our ground
will be big challenge for us. Our
kids have had a great off season
so far. We have gotten stronger in
the weight room.”
Another test for the Bulldogs
will come after the holiday tournament,
with a road trip to Warren
Central, which is ranked
pre-season number one in the 4th
Region.
“I’m sure they will be ready
for us. They return a veteran
ball club and after what we did
to them here last year, we are
going to have a really big challenge,”
Messer said. “The good
thing about moving the game
back to where we did, is it’s going
to springboard us into the All
‘A’ and the type of pressure we
are going to have to overcome to
hopefully win it.”
After the Warren Central
game, Clinton County will play
the second half of district competition.
“We need to find a way to
make sure we are the number one
seed,” Messer said.
This year, Clinton County
will host the All “A” Regional
Tournament, which will give the
Bulldogs a bye into the regional
tournament. The Bulldogs will
play the winner of the Metcalfe/
Monroe County game in the second
round.
“The good thing is whoever
we play, we will know quite well.
We will play Monroe County
early in the year and we will
have played Metcalfe County
Clinton County’s Ryan Beard came off the bench last season as
twice,” Messer said. “Our kids
are going to be prepared and they
will know what we have to do to
hopefully get through that game.
If we can, we will have the finals
right here at home. The last two
times we’ve hosted the finals,
we’ve won the region and went
to the All ‘A’ state and that’s the
goal this year. Any thing less
than winning the All ‘A’ is going
to be a disappointment for me as
a coach and the rest of our coaching
staff. Our expectations are, I
think we are the best team in the
All ‘A’.”
If the Bulldogs have a chance
to participate in the All “A” Classic
State Tournament in Frankfort,
KY, some of the games on
the schedule will be dropped.
Following Jackson County
and Allen County/Scottsville,
Wayne County will travel to “The
Castle” on January 29, 2013.
“They have a great line up and
they were very versatile last year.
They like to get up and down the
floor,” Messer said. “It will be a
big challenge for us. They shoot
the ball really, really well.”
To finish the schedule, Clinton
County will travel to Monroe
County on its senior night, host
South Laurel and host Barren
County on February 14, which
will be the Bulldogs’ and Lady
Bulldogs’ final home game of the
season.
“According to the ratings,
Barren County is either third or
fourth in our region,” Messer
said. “Top to bottom, it’s as difficult
of a schedule as we’ve had
since I’ve been here going on
seven years.”
Messer’s goal for this season
is to make his kids mentally
tough for the post season play.
Everything he has scheduled
during the regular season is to
prepare them for the post season
aspect of this year.
“Not that we didn’t have a difficult
schedule last year, but we
wanted to make it even tougher
for our kids because I feel like
that over the past six years we
have made an improvement. I
wanted to put together a schedule
that was going to challenge
us as much mentally as it does
physically,” Messer said. “There
are very few games where we are
going to walk on the floor and
expect that we have this one in
hand. It’s really diverse. We have
the athletic, quick teams who are
going to press us and we have the
big, grind-it-out, half court teams
to where we are going to have
to do different things to create
space. That will get us to the post
season to where we are going on
the road and in district competi-
See BULLDOGS, page 4
Joe Davis will be one of several outside threats this season for the
Bulldogs.
Frank England is one of this year’s three seniors on the squad. His
ability to move up and down the floor should be an advantage for the
Bulldogs.
Averging almost 15 points per game last season, Colby Langford
will be expected to lead the team this season with leadership and
experience.
tion. If you are not the one seed,
right off the bat you have a difficult
game.”
Messer said there are just as
many similarities as there are
differences in this year’s and last
year’s team. Scoring will be different,
as well as the dynamic of
the team, but Clinton County will
dress the same respectable group
of young men that will give pride
to the spectators in the crowd.
“We lost great players last
season. I’m not saying that los-
ing Wayne (Stearns) Wendell
(Maupin), Sawyer (Stalcup), and
Derek (Albertson) hasn’t put a
void, in some ways, but we are
also returning kids who have experience,”
Messer said. “Keifer
and Colby have to step up their
game even more than they did
last year. Colby a fantastic season
last year. He led us in scoring
with 15 points per game He has
to continue to do that and he has
to work to improve his all-around
game. Now he is going to be one
of the two primary threats that
people have to match up with.”
This year, as in the past two
years, Keifer Dalton will take the
role as point guard for the Bulldogs.
Just a sophomore, his leadership
value is that of a senior
with the previous year’s experience
under his belt.
“He will be turned loose more
to be more offensively aggressive,”
Messer said. “He has to
continue to improve his shooting
to where people have to guard
him head-to-head from the three
point line in.”
Also playing a huge role on
this year’s team will be Senior
Ryan Beard and Sophomore Joe
Davis.
“Last season they played in
every basketball game we had
and played big minutes,” Messer
said. “They are different players
than Sawyer and Wayne, but they
have great value that will make
positive contributions in a differ-
A senior for the Bulldogs,
Frank England has entered the
starting lineup and will provide a
positive aspect to Clinton County’s
game plan this season.
“He has played lights-out this
summer and so far in practice his
confidence level is at the height
that we’ve waited on it to be,”
Messer said. “He is as gifted a
kid as we’ve had. He is athletic,
Lance Claywell came off the bench last season and added a spark
to the Bulldogs’ offense. Claywell is a sophomore this season.
got great spring off the floor and
can cause some mis-matches by
stepping out to the perimeter. I
like the kids that we are replacing
what we lost with.”
Messer said he could go down
the entire lineup on his bench and
feel confident with whoever is on
the floor at any given time.
“As a whole, they are the
most talented group that we’ve
had. Each one of those kids gives
us something,” Messer said.
“Ethan Cook has a heart the size
of Texas. He knows all the things
we expect out of our schemes.
He will be a stabilizing player
on the floor. You know when
he is on the floor, he will do the
right thing and put the basketball
where it needs to be.”
Scoring for this year’s team
will be somewhat different according
to Messer. He said there
probably won’t be one dominate
player scoring as many double
digit points for each game, however,
the accumulation of everybody
scoring will make them a
threat.
“I think we will have seven,
eight, nine kids come into the
game and give us six or seven
points, which adds up just as
quick as one guy getting 14
points,” Messer said. “The sum
of our parts will make us just
as good as we were last year ...
we are just doing it a different
way. We could virtually play
a different-type rotation each
game. I can put a line up on the
floor that is my best against pressure.
I have another line up that
is probably my best offensive
line up ... if somebody wants to
grind us out in the half court or if
someone wants to spread us out
across the floor, I have a line up
for that.”
Messer said the versatility of
his players could make the game
harder on him as a coach, but
once he finds what he needs during
the game, the players will do
the rest.
“What’s going to make us better
is all these kids realize they
are competing for minutes,”
Messer said. “It makes practices
a whole lot more competitive and
by it being competitive it makes
each player better and makes the
team better.”
This season, Messer said he
believes his defense will hold its
opponents to the low 50s during
each game.
“We’ve got great quickness.
We are going to be able to press
a lot,” Messer said. “I think this
year we may even be a passinglane-reading
team. We should be
able to get a few more easy ones
where we pick the pass off and
get a layup.”
The chemistry for this year’s
team is similar to last year’s team
in that each player’s focus is for
the good of the team.
“We still have very unselfish
kids, but to a degree, we may
be too unselfish,” Messer said.
“With this group, the cohesiveness
is just as good as it was last
year, but I haven’t seen the aggressiveness
that I saw last year.”
Bulldog basketball brings in
a good crowd during the winter
months and Messer doesn’t expect
anything less this season.
“I would hope everyone is as
excited as the coaches and players
are,” Messer said. “I think we
are at the point to where we have
elevated expectations to where
there is already a bug of excitement
of what our potential might
possibly be. The culture building
activity that we had at the start
of the year when the whole district
came together, we focused
on school pride, team pride. I
think it was a big asset and made
everyone realize that regardless
whether its a sport or its a classroom
assignment, or a school activity,
we all represent our community.
How we carry ourselves
is the impression we want to give
other counties and teams. The
support we had last season was
incredible.”
“Our cheering section we
had at the home games in the
end zone, have really made an
impression on teams. I’ve heard
several coaches say they wished
they had that at their school,”
Messer said. “I think what has
happened last year we’ll continue
to build upon that. I think one
of the reasons that worked last
year was because we were successful
and our kids were fun to
watch from a peer stand point, as
well as an adult standpoint. Our
kids were such great kids, they
were easy to pull for.”
Messer’s goals for this season
are not in any way a step down
from last year’s 20 plus win season.
He expects to win 20 plus
more for the third season in a
row, win the All “A” for the third
time during his seven years, be
contenders for the district title
and take another step in the regional
tournament.
“It’s time to get over the
hump and find a way mentally
for our program to take out that
big name team,” Messer said. “I
expect for our program to be so
hard-nosed, that one night, when
something is against you, you
find that one extra play that you
are going to go get just because
you want it more than the other
guy. If that happens, I think there
will be an increase in our crowds,
and over the course of the next
couple of years we are going to
win this region. We are going to
do something that everybody in
our community will be proud of
and that’s what it’s all about.”
Clinton County will bring
back some familiar faces on the
bench in 2012-2013 with assistant
coaches, Mike Beard, Leighman
Messer and Nick Irwin.
“My staff is as good as you
will find in the state of Kentucky,”
Messer said. “I can read
them and they can read me. I feel
confident that we can go head to
head with any other staff in the
state.”
A new face on the bench this
season will be Storm Burchett.
Burchett is a former player at
Clinton County High School and
played for Messer all four years
of his high school career.
“We are excited to have Storm
on our staff. He’s played recently
enough that the kids in practice
remember how hard that kid
worked,” Messer said. “When he
was a player, he was hard-nosed,
he was driven, he was team oriented
... he wasn’t the most athletic,
but he got the job done. I
think the thing he will bring to
us is the desire to make the team
better. He will be able to talk in
common language, maybe better
so than myself or the other
coaches. Anytime you can help
former players start in a career its
a thrill for you as a head coach.”
Seniors:
Ryan Beard
During the past couple seasons, he has
consistently given us quality minutes
both at the guard and post positions
becoming our best post defender. He
is the type of player good teams have,
who understands you don’t have to
score points or take a lot of shots to be
important to your basketball team. This
season he needs to be able to consistently
make outside shots to space the floor. He
is an excellent passer and must continue
to improve his ability to beat defenders
off the dribble. He must also continue to
improve his position defense to become a
better on the ball defender.
Ethan Cook
He is a very knowledgeable player
and plays the game with tremendous
determination. Thus, he does all the little
things right to make his team better.
He has made himself a good outside
shooter and possesses a tremendous
desire to improve as a player off the
dribble. He works exceptionally hard
in practice and must continue to use his
knowledge of the game to offset his size.
He has steadily improved his overall ball
handling and passing which He must do
to continue to become a better position
defender to offset the quickness of
opposing guards.
Frank England
He is very athletically gifted with great
spring in his legs. He has had a terrific
summer and fall offensively. He does
a good job of creating his own shot
off the dribble and has improved his
range, which will allow us to create
some mismatches for him offensively.
Defensively, he needs to continue to
become more physical when defending
the ball and become a defensive stopper
for this team. Likewise, we must be able
to consistently count on his ability to be
close to a double digit rebounder.
Juniors:
Clay Choate
He gives us another change of pace,
combo-type player. He is very hardnosed
and will always make the hustle plays.
He has a very good first step off the
dribble when facing the basket, but has to
continue to develop his range to pull the
defense out to use his quickness. With
continued development of his back to the
basket footwork, he could give bigger
defenders trouble in trying to match his
quickness. Defensively, we need him to
become a better
defender on the perimeter.
Colby Langford
He had a terrific year offensively last
season and must continue to work to give
us even more production this season.
Offensively around the basket he is very
crafty and does a terrific job of using
the ball to gain an advantage over taller
opponents. His ability to consistently
make the three makes him a tough
match-up for opposing teams. He needs
to take on a more active leadership role
for this team both by example and being
vocal. Defensively, he needs to continue
working on being more physical and
aggressive without fouling in the post
and continue working on his positioning
out on the floor to guard quicker
opponents.
Parker Means
He plays exceptionally hard and doesn’t
care to mix it up in the post area.
Offensively, he needs to finish stronger
at the rim and continue to develop post
moves to offset his size disadvantage.
He works extremely hard in practice and
has the strength to be successful in our
offense. Defensively, he must become a
better position defender in the post and
improve his ability to defend out on the
floor.
Travis Starns
He plays exceptionally hard as well
and will make all the hustle plays. He
is very hard nosed and always seems to
be around the ball. He must continue
working to improve his footwork
offensively and finishing at the rim,
while making a conscientious effort to
becoming a more physical post defender.
Josh Tallent
He has terrific quickness and athletic
ability. He needs to become more
aggressive and physical on both ends
of the floor. He has shown the ability to
score in multiple ways offensively. He
needs to continue to improve his overall
ball handling and passing. Defensively,
he needs to become a more physical
defender and use his athleticism to
become a lock down defender.
Sophomores:
Chase Anderson
He possesses very crisp post moves
around the basket and finishes very well.
He has gotten stronger and is becoming
a very good post defender and a chargetaking
machine. Within our offensive
system, he does a great job of creating
lanes to the basket but must continue
to improve his outside shooting range.
Defensively, he must improve his lateral
quickness to defend the dribble.
Lance Claywell
He is a terrific offensive player.
Comments from page 7
He shoots the three extremely well and has
developed into a very good scorer off the dribble.
He is a good ball handler but must continue to get
stronger to really utilize it to play through contact
and create the ability to play multiple positions.
He must continue to work to become a more
complete defender and more physical on the floor.
Keifer Dalton
He has been outstanding at point guard the last
two seasons and one of the tops in the state. He
is a great decision maker and very explosive
off the dribble. He has worked diligently to
become a consistent shooter and must have a
very productive season offensively for us to
accomplish our goals. He does an exceptional
job of running our offense and will give us the
ability to push the ball even more this season.
Defensively, has terrific footwork in guarding the
dribble, but has to continue to improve off the
ball tendencies to alleviate fouls.
Joe Davis
He shoots the basketball extremely well and
gets off the floor very well with his pull-up. He
has improved steadily his ability to get to the
rim and become a better entry passer. He must
be a consistent scorer for us this season every
game Defensively with his quickness, he must
challenge himself daily to become a lockdown
defender versus the dribble and want the
challenge of guarding the
other team’s best player.
Glen England
He is a good ball handler and possesses excellent
quickness. He does an exceptional job of
breaking defenses down off the dribble. He
will play minutes at the point this season and
provide even more depth for this team. He must
continue to develop his mid-range and three point
shot to fully utilize his abilities off the dribble.
Defensively, he has a great motor and is a very
good on the ball defender.
Lucas Gibson
He has excellent quickness, jumping ability,
and strength. His understanding of the game has
improved greatly. He must continue to become a
better shooter and ball handler. Defensively, he
has the quickness to be a very good defender with
continued work on his footwork.
Chance McWhorter
He has excellent athletic ability, length, and
strength. He shoots the ball well off the dribble
and has the ability to be a terrific penetrator with
hard work. He needs to continue to improve his
outside shooting touch. Defensively, he needs to
play more physical versus the dribble and play
more relaxed at all times on the floor.
Cole Nelson
He has terrific size and strength around the
basket. We need him to provide a physical
presence for this team in the post area.
Offensively, he has great hands and touch in the
post. He needs to focus on consistently making
stronger moves to the rim instead of finesse
to take advantage of his size. Defensively, he
needs to establish position quicker to better use
his strength to move players off the block and
become more active on the boards.
Freshmen:
Eli Brown
He possesses very good strength and quickness.
He needs to continue to develop his range
offensively and overall ball handling off the
dribble to better utilize his game. Defensively,
he has the tools to become a very good defender
with proper positioning.
Michael Collins
He is extremely quick and shoots the basketball
well outside. He needs to continue to develop
his ability to go both ways off the dribble.
Defensively, he has the quickness to be a very
good on the ball defender.
Chad Smith
He has good length in the post area. He must
continue to get stronger and understand offensive
and defensive assignments, while working harder
each day.
Caleb York
He is a hard worker and shoots the mid-range
shot well. He must continue to become more
physical in the post and get quicker off the
dribble. Defensively, he must do a better job with
spacing and footwork to defend the dribble.
8th Grader:
Colin Langford
He is very athletic and physical on the floor. He
shoots the ball well outside and has the ability to
become very good off the dribble to the rim. He
needs to continue to develop his ball handling
and passing on the perimeter. Defensively, he is a
very good on the ball defender and doesn’t mind
to mix it up in the post.
Josh Tallent will come off the bench this season as
one of the team’s premier juniors.
Thompson ready for second year as head coach
Hannah Campbell will be one of two seniors on this year’s Lady
Bulldogs basketball team. Her outside shooting will make her a
threat to opponents in the coming season.
The Clinton County Lady
Bulldogs had somewhat of a
disappointing year last season,
finishing with a 6-25 record,
but this year, second year Head
Coach Darrell Thompson expects
a much better ball team
with the veteran players he has
on the roster.
The 2012-2013 season officially
began for Clinton County
on October 15, 2012, with the
official beginning of practice.
Since then, the Lady Dawgs have
been hitting the hardwood and
practicing to take their skill set to
the next level.
For fans, the season began
with the “Meet the Bulldogs”
night on Saturday, November 10
and at that point, basketball enthusiasts
saw the first look at the
Lady Dawgs.
Thompson said he hopes his
team will “perform under the
lights” the way he expects them
to based on the progress he has
seen in practice.
“I feel that last year, against
Russell, was our best game,”
Thompson said. “Even though
we lost, I thought it was the best
game all year. This summer, it
carried over. We are still trying to
figure out roles among the players,
but we will get to that point.”
This year, the Lady Dawgs
have two seniors on the squad
with Justice Boils and Hannah
Campbell. Thompson said their
leadership role is of great value
to the team.
“It’s unbelievable. I couldn’t
ask for anymore as far as their
leadership is concerned,”
Thompson said. “They are two
individuals I think the girls look
up to. If there is any intensity that
we need, we will usually call on
one of the two and they will respond.”
During the past several years,
Clinton County has had several
different coaches with different
styles to teach to the Lady
Dawgs. Now, Clinton County
has picked a coach that is in it for
the long haul and team chemisty
is becoming a staple in the foundation
of Lady Dawg basketball.
“It’s very important,” Thompson
said. “Experience is very
important. If you count playing
experience, they probably
don’t have as much as some of
the other girls, but as far as their
maturity is concerned, it is very
valuable to us. They understand
you have to come out and play
hard everyday.”
This year the Lady Dawgs
will begin its season on November
26, at Franklin-Simpson.
Even though the first game is
an away game, the Lady Dawgs
have plenty of home game this
season and according to Thompson,
he scheduled it that way to
cut down on traveling time during
the season.
“Franklin-Simpson is usually
a good team and they will be
experienced,” Thompson said.
“With a group of young ladies, I
guess we will grow up fast.”
After the Monday season
opener, Clinton County will be
home on November 30 against
the Australian National Team.
“I think the girls are looking
forward to that game,” Thompson
said. “I hope the fans get behind
it too. With it being the first
home game, I think we will have
a good crowd.”
Clinton County will dive right
into the first half of district play
with home games against Metcalfe
County and Cumberland
County on December 7 and December
11 respectively. The first
half of district play will wrap
up on December 14 at Russell
County.
“You only get better by play-
ing good teams. It gives you kind
of a gauge to go by,” Thompson
said. “You get to see what you
need to work on early in the year,
plus, out of our first eight games,
five of them are at home and it
continues that trend throughout
the schedule.”
On December 20, the Lady
Dawgs will travel to Caverna
to participate
Alex Beard - Junior
in the Caverna Holiday Classic,
which will be the first of two
holiday tournaments for Clinton
County.
Following Christmas, Clinton
County will host the Best of the
Lakes Classic and according to
Thompson, it is something the
Lady Dawgs hope to do every
year.
“We got worn down last
year simply
because
we
traveled
so
much.
Every
night
was
going
somewhere
on a
bus and some
nights it was consecutive
nights on long trips.
We went in this year and tried
to get the schedule to benefit
us,” Thompson said. “Our pre-
Christmas tournament, we are
traveling to Cave City. We can
drive back and forth and spend
the night in our own beds. After
Christmas (Best of the Lakes
Holiday Classic) is something
we are really looking forward to.
We are hoping it’s a huge success
and its something we can build
on. The other thing that the fans
are going to like about it, is it is
made up of local teams.”
Thompson said there are five
teams in the Best of the Lakes
Holiday Classic including Cumberland
County, Pickett County,
Clay County, TN, and McCreary
Central.
“Our marquee game will be
During the tournament, teams
will play a “round robin” style
of tournament and according to
Thompson, the games won’t have
to start early in the afternoon, allowing
more fans to come out
and watch each team play.
“I think the earliest game is at
5 p.m.,” Thompson said. “It will
be on December 27, 28 and 29.
On that Saturday, I think there
are some earlier games, but most
people are off of work and can
come out and watch some basketball.”
After New Year’s Day, Clinton
County will move into the
second half of district play, followed
by the 4th Regional All
“A” Classic Tournament, which
will be held at Lindle Castle
Gymnasium.
With the Bulldogs and Lady
Bulldogs being the host team,
Clinton County will get the first
round bye and play the winner
of Metcalfe County and Monroe
County game on both the girls’
and boys’ sides of the tournament.
“That’s an interesting first
round game, Monroe and Metcalfe,”
Thompson said. “Those
are two nice teams going at it.
In pre-season rankings, Monroe
girls were the top rated team in
the All ‘A’ in our region. I would
say they are going to be one of
the top rated teams in the All ‘A’
state.”
Thompson said the Lady
Dawgs’ longest road trip of the
season will come after the All
“A” when the team travels to
Russellville to take on the Panthers
on January 21, which is
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
“I think we are going to make
this game an annual game,”
Thompson said. “It’s my understanding
that we are going to try
to keep it every year on Martin
Luther King Day.”
Adding Russellville to this
year’s schedule will give the
Lady Dawgs a chance to see another
4th Region opponent during
the season.
“There are a lot of teams that
we just didn’t see last year,”
Thompson said. “I’ve tried to get
Warren East and South Warren,
but I get tired of driving to Bowling
Green every year when they
don’t want to return the favor.”
Clinton County also added
Taylor County to its schedule
this season, with both a home
Macy Campbell started several games last season as an seventh
grader. She will be expected to provide quality minutes this season
after suffering from a torn ACL at the end of last season.
the regular season.
“That’s what everybody plays
for,” Thompson said. “You can
look at college coaches ... They
divide their schedules up. We
are the same way. The way our
schedule works out, we have
a few games, then we play the
district schedule, we play a few
more, then we play the second
half of the district schedule. All
of that is geared up for the end
of the year. That’s what I told
the girls. When it comes district
tournament time you can be 20-0
or 0-20 ... it doesn’t matter. With
losing two key seniors last year
with Breonia (Thurman) and Veronica
(Lowhorn), we have lost
significant scoring, but I think
we have players who will step up
and take up the slack.”
During last season’s final
game against Russell County, the
Lady Bulldogs pulled together
and gave the Lady Lakers a scare
late in the fourth quarter. Eventually
losing 62-48, Russell County
extended its lead from the foul
line and not from the field.
“I told the girls, you are only
as good as your last game. If
they had went out there and laid
an egg then I don’t think people
would be excited to see them
play this year. I hear a lot of comments
that people are excited to
watch us play. That’s what we
are trying for.”
Thompson said this season
will look a lot different as far as
from the fan’s perspective.
“Last year, we were a little
conservative,” Thompson said.
“This year we are going to open
it up a little ... see what we can
do. These girls have worked
to get better. I don’t know how
many coaches could have won
six games and been pleased with
the effort ... I never have to question
these kids’ efforts. We’ve
had about three good practices in
a row and I don’t see any letting
up.”
Thompson will have the same
look on the bench with his assistant
coaches, except for the addition
of a new face or two.
Jessica (Cummings) Conner,
was a Lady Bulldog during
what many have considered the
best years of Lady Bulldog Bas-
ketball. On her playing resume,
she was a starter on the team that
picked up runners-up honors in
the KHSAA State finals against
Lexington Catholic, as well
as having two All “A” Classic
Championship rings.
“I think it’s a necessity to
have a female around the girls.
It’s nothing against Tim (Hicks)
and Patrick (Stalcup), but one
of the girls came up to me after
practice one day and said she felt
more comfortable having a female
on staff,” Thompson said.
“We will still have Tim and Patrick
and Bozie York. Bozie does
a lot of things that people don’t
see. He goes out and helps us
get sponsors for the Christmas
tournament, scouting tapes and
stuff like that. Any night I go on
a scouting trip, all I have to do is
pick up the phone and he is ready
to roll.”
At the beginning of the school
year, Superintendant Charlotte
Bernard brought the entire
school district together and hosted
a “pep rally” of sorts at the
high school. Thompson believes
that day will play a huge factor
in attendance this winter.
“The message wasn’t that
it is just Clinton County High
School’s team, it’s the whole
county’s team,” Thompson said.
“That’s what we emphasize everyday
with our young girls and
the older girls as well. We told
them this year that they have to
be ambassadors for the basketball
team. Not only at the high
school, but out in the public as
well. Get out and you represent
us. We are hoping that if people
see a positive influence from the
players, how they act, how they
behave, how they interact with
everyone, that they say ‘I’m
going to go and support those
kids.’”
Looking ahead to the future,
Thompson is in direct contact
with the feeder program for the
Lady Dawgs’ Basketball team.
He believes it is essential for
every great team to have a great
beginning.
“It’s a necessity. I wish we
had the facilities and opportunity
to where the younger girls
could come in everyday and
not let their seasons end in November,”
Thompson said. “I am
well pleased with what’s going
on with our feeder system. Can
we do more? Absolutely. I was
informed the other night that I
have a group of parent volunteers
who are taking first and second
graders to Somerset to play in a
rec league. It goes back to ‘WE
ARE BULLDOGS’ and we are
not just the high school team.
It’s everybody’s team and those
parents who are taking the time
to take their kids there or taking
them to various camps, that’s all
a part of it.”
As the season gets underway
next Monday at Franklin-Simpson,
Thompson is ready and eager
to get this season started.
“I’m very excited. It’s a new
year and when you see the girls
and how enthusiastic they are to
show up for a practice, you just
want them to succeed,” Thompson
said. “You can’t wait for it to
start so they can see if their hard
work has paid off. I really think
we will be making steps in the
right direction.
The Lady Dawgs’ first home
game will be Friday, November
30, against the Australian National
Team. That game will be
a double-header with the Bulldogs.
Seniors:
Hannah Campbell
Hannah is the other half of our senior duo, who provides us
with valuable experience. She is one of our better outside shooters
and is starting to gain confidence in her abilities. To become
a complete player Hannah needs to improve her ball handling
skills and defensive toughness.
Justice Boils
Justice is one of our two seniors and has shown great improvement
over the past year of playing. She gives us a strong post
presence, is an excellent passer and shots the ball well from 15
feet. Another quality that Justice has is her leadership qualities,
and with such a young team this is an absolute must. One area
that she needs to improve on is her footwork in the post, which
last year caused her to commit several turnovers.
Juniors:
Alex Beard
Alex is a player that gives us a lot of flexibility in our lineup
since she has the ability to play multiple positions. She has proven
to be our most consistent and effective outside shooter and we
expect her offensive numbers to increase this season as her physical
stamina has improved since last year. We need Alex to stay
aggressive on the floor at all times. She sometimes gets caught
watching the game.
Whitney Bookout
She is one of the best athletes on the team, who really excels
in an open court game. Whitney has the ability to get to the rim
and the free throw line with ease. She needs to work on her ball
handling skills as well as playing every second hard.
Tara Elmore
Tara finished last year on a high note with her best game coming
in the district tournament. If she picks up where she left off
Tara could be a player who enables us to enjoy team success. Her
strongest asset is offensive rebounding but also her biggest weakness
is her consistent work ethic.
Sophomores:
Shyanne McWhorter
She is one of the hardest workers on the team who always
guards our opponents best offensive player. Shyanne has improved
her overall guard skills which will allow her to play some
minutes at the PG position. Her biggest area for improvement is
to develop a reliable jump shot.
Ansley Stalcup
Played mostly PG last year and led the team in assists per
game as well as doing a nice job scoring-wise for us. Would like
to play Ansley some this year at the 2 guard spot to take advantage
of her well-rounded offensive skills. For her to become the
best player she possibly can be, her decision making skills must
improve.
Freshmen:
Kayla Dicken
She went from seldom playing to having a breakout game
against Pulaski County where she earned double figures in points
and rebounds. She is a player that will be counted on to provide
depth to our front court. Look for Kayla to have a big year if she
continues to work hard and improve on her shooting percentage.
Cori Langford
Another versatile player who is capable of playing many different
positions on the floor. With her size, she can create matchup
problems for opposing guards and when playing the post her
quickness and ball handling skills allows her to take advantage
of other teams post players. Cori must start trusting her abilities
and gain confidence in herself.
Eighth Grade:
Bree Boils
One of many of our talented 8th grade class who will be expected
to give the team valuable minutes at the PG position.
Bree is a strong physical guard who can get to the basket with
ease, her main point of improvement is using her weak hand with
greater proficiency which will lead to her having more scoring
opportunities and reducing her turnovers.
Macy Campbell
Also a talented young guard who worked her way into the
starting lineup last season providing us with another scoring option.
She was beginning to play with more confidence last season
when she suffered an unfortunate knee injury. Came back
and played well this summer but showed signs of early fatigue.
That is something that we can correct, but Macy must now work
on regaining confidence in her own abilities and hopefully stay
healthy.
Makenzie Polston
Another young inside player who works extremely hard to
make herself the complete basketball player. She has a high
basketball IQ and always finds herself around the basketball.
Makenzie is one of the best rebounders on the team, but must
work on her outside shooting range.
Allee Hopper
A young post player who, if she continues to work hard, could
see some valuable minutes this season. Plays with a strong physical
presence but must work on her footwork and post skills to
reach her full potential. If she does that, it will not only make her
better but the team better as well.
Sixth Grade:
Joelie Hicks
At only a 6th grader, Joelie will be the youngest member of
the varsity team this year.. Her biggest asset is her confidence
in herself and her own abilities, however, she needs to work on
getting her shot off quicker and becoming more comfortable with
her left hand.
