Doing The Most Good
Reaping What We Sow
Annual Report 2012
Mission Statement:
The Salvation Army, an
international movement, is an
evangelical part of the universal
Christian Church. Its message is
based on the Bible. Its ministry
is motivated by the love of God.
Its mission is to preach the
gospel of Jesus Christ and to
meet human needs in His name
without discrimination.
Planting The
Seeds…
It takes skill and compassion to plant a garden of hopes and dreams for people to
grow. Together, our donors, board members, volunteers and staff have created a
garden by giving their time and donations for the continued success of our many
proven programs and services.
Dear Board Members, Friends, Supporters, Volunteers, Community
Leaders, Partners and Neighbors:
We are humbled and touched by the community’s continued support
of The Salvation Army programs. Moreover, we thank you – our donors,
volunteers, and advisory board members – for helping plant the seeds and
make miracles possible with your generous contributions of money, time,
and energy.
We are privileged to share with you the 2012 Annual Report for The Salvation
Army in Broward County. We are certain that as you review the past year,
you will be impressed with the scope and quality of the Army’s programs
and services. Our goal is simple: We will continue to provide services with
your support. Whether it’s a night of shelter, a hot meal, or a guiding hand,
someone’s life will be changed. We would never be able to tell you about
all of them, but we hope that we can give you a glimpse into our garden
of accomplishments through our annual report. Imagine all of the stories
behind the numbers as you read this report, and you will see that it really
has been a good year for our community.
When Ashlen came to The Salvation Army, it was because she and
her two young children had no place to call home. She had been
living with an acquaintance and when she became pregnant with her third
child, Ashlen was told she had to leave. She was working and determined
to care for her children, but she needed a place to temporarily call home.
“I had never lived in a shelter before.”
Ashlen was referred to The Salvation Army’s transitional housing program
in July 2012, where she received the tools and resources necessary to rebuild
her life. The Salvation Army helped her find child care for Sarai and
Donald Jr., provided the family with their own room, comfortable beds,
and healthy meals. Ashlen attended life skills and budgeting classes with
experienced and trained case managers.
Unfortunately, as Ashlen worked hard at becoming independent she was
faced with even more of life’s obstacles. She lost her baby at birth and a few
weeks later her job ended, but Ashlen was determined to overcome these
barriers. In a few short months, she found employment again and married
the father of her children. Donald moved into the shelter and they began
working on a plan, together, as a family. Today, through the support and
services at The Salvation Army, Ashlen and Donald have maintained
employment and continue to save money to better their lives. They
are looking forward to moving into their own place by July 2013.
“Temporary housing basically gave us
a place to live and allowed us to find
jobs and move forward.”
Transitional Housing:
The Salvation Army in Broward County houses 50 families and 60 single men and women.
Clients receive training and guidance while they work to overcome the barriers that led them
into homelessness. The goal is permanent housing and economic self-sufficiency. Services
provided include intensive case management to help clients set and achieve goals, day care
for children and classes that teach budgeting, parenting, anger management and other life skills.
The Salvation Amy is one of the few shelters in Broward that provides housing and supportive
services to homeless pregnant women. Plymouth Colony, our transitional housing facility in
Hollywood, is an apartment complex that was fully renovated in 2009. Families at Plymouth
Colony have their own 1 or 2 bedroom apartments, cook their own meals and pay for their
utilities. This is the final step to independence.
Meeting Emergency Needs:
In Broward County we provide rent/mortgage assistance to families in crisis. A food pantry
supplies weekly groceries to hungry families and our Compassion Café is open five days a week
to serve hot meals to the chronic homeless.
Children Services:
Through our two Summer Camp programs children in our community make new friends and
lasting memories. Children from the shelter, the community and the church have an opportunity
to attend The Salvation Army’s Camp Keystone in north east FL and The Salvation Army’s day
camp provides fun enriching experiences each summer. The Yes Kids Can! program serves 60
homeless children and teens living in Salvation Army facilities. This program offers creative,
social and academic activities that teach important life skills. Students are encouraged to see
beyond their current circumstances and aspire to a positive and successful future.
Holidays:
On Thanksgiving Day The Salvation Army opens its doors to 500 needy people for a wonderful
Thanksgiving dinner sponsored by The Cheesecake Factory. At Christmas time, through the
Angel Tree program, Christmas gifts are provided to 3100 children. Gifts are collected from
Angel trees set up in malls, businesses, churches and schools.
Disaster Services:
The Salvation Army is a first responder in times of man-made and natural disasters. Food, water
and spiritual care are provided to workers and victims.
The Salvation Army is a Place of Worship:
Services are held every Sunday. Character building youth programs take place during the week.
While our homeless residents are welcome at church services, they are not required to attend.
In addition, special recreational and educational programs are provided each Thursday for
100 seniors.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at
the proper time we will
Reap a Harvest if we do not give up.”
- Galatians 6:9
Myrtle’s foundation had always been her husband and
when he left her and their three young children, she
had no idea where to begin. At the time she was living in
Georgia and the only place to be with family was in Florida.
Myrtle packed her things and headed south in November
2011. She knew there was little room for her and her children
at her relative’s home, so she immediately began looking for
work and a place to temporarily call home. Myrtle and her
three children, Dezuray, Travis and Tremaine, came to The
Salvation Army Level One transitional housing program in
March 2012.
“My kids were my motivation to keep going.”
In just a few short weeks, Myrtle was working, saving money
and ready to move into Plymouth Colony, our Level Two
transitional housing program. There she would have her own
apartment and be one step closer to self-sufficiency.
“The Salvation Army staff was so helpful, I had my
independence back and I felt better about our situation.”
Today, Myrtle says her biggest accomplishment is having a
place to call her own for her and her children. She moved out
of The Salvation Army in April 2013 and is in the process of
divorce. Myrtle carries her independence with her every day
and smiles because she feels so accomplished.
“For me, it is a testimony that there is no limitation on anything.
This was just a stepping stone to get where I am today.”
The Salvation Army Family Stores
&
Adult Rehabilitation Center
The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in Broward County provides an in-residence rehabilitation
program with spiritual, social and emotional assistance for men who have lost the ability to cope with their problems
and provide for themselves.
Adult Rehabilitation Center
The ARC program assists the beneficiaries in learning to live a balanced lifestyle.
Participation in all program components is required by every beneficiary. The
Income for 2012
center offers residential housing, work, and group and individual therapy, all in
a clean, wholesome environment. The physical and spiritual care that program
participants receive prepares them to re-enter society and return
to gainful employment. Many of those who have been
rehabilitated are reunited with their families and resume a normal life.
Since the ARC doesn’t solicit funding, the ministry runs solely on the generosity of individuals,
organizations and businesses who donate goods to be sold in the Family Stores. Proceeds from
their sale go toward providing important services for the program participants, helping them
get back on their feet and live a productive life.
“I had lost my apartment, car, job, family and every relationship I had prior to
entering the ARC.”
Danny came to The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in October 2011.
He had lost his hopes and dreams to drug and alcohol abuse, he put God on the
back burner. When Danny came to the ARC, he was ready to be in a program that
provided him the support, structure and accountability of living a better life, clean.
Danny’s passion was cooking, and he was not sure he could ever be in the field
again, due to the lifestyle that he remembers went with it. Then one day, a simple
twist of fate, Danny was asked to fill in one night to cook for the ARC. That is
when it all changed.
Today, Danny is an employee at the ARC as the Kitchen Supervisor, providing
three square meals a day. He is in the transition phase of the program and will
celebrate two years clean on October 10, 2013. Danny is looking forward to
returning home to Boston this Summer for the first time in years. He has hopes
and dreams, he has his life back and he could not of done it without the support,
structure and rehabilitation from the ARC.
In one year The Salvation Army...
