Year 4/5W NEWS
The highlight of our year was definitely 4/5
camp at Mapleton. It was a wonderful
experience especially for Year 4 with their
first away camp. Amongst the many
activities were abseiling, giant swing (and I
do mean giant – Mrs Wendt and Ms Ellis
wouldn't do it), possum glider, 12 metre
high flying fox, orienteering, canoeing
where a snake was spotted gliding over the
water, water slides and pool, bush skills
and archery. The facilities, instructors and
food were awesome. The night games
organised by Mr Bentley were great fun
and especially enjoyed by Mrs Wendt who
got to act like one of the kids.
A special thanks to Mr Bentley for
organising everything, Mr Lovejoy who was
in great control of the canoeing, Mr Ross
(Harrold) for our thought provoking
devotions and Ms Ellis who was our spare
mum and nurse.
Can't wait for next year's camp … Mrs
Wendt and Year 4/5.
JUNIOR COLLEGE News
Year 2/3 B & C have spent the last 6 weeks attending
Maryborough Gymsports for their Physical Education
lessons. Students rotated through 4 activities each
week. They used three different types of
trampolines, the balance beam, uneven bars,
parallel bars, rings and obstacle courses. Students
really enjoyed trying the new equipment and it was
very rewarding to see how much they improved
each week.
Starting Year 8 in 2012?
Monday
28 November 2011
8:30am to 3:00pm
GOODBYE MISS DREXLER!
It’s a sad time of year because we have to say goodbye to our
6/7K teacher, Miss Drexler.
We wish her well in her future endeavours at Wondai State
School in a leadership role – we will miss her dearly in Middle
College!
Some comments from her students from this year:
‘Hope you have a good time, wish you were my teacher next
year, will really miss you’ – Jade
‘She was really good at teaching math’ ‐ Jacy
‘Miss Drexler is strict but is fun when you’re are good’ ‐ Georgia
‘Miss is a great teacher and I will miss her very much’ – Rachelle
‘She very nice to everyone!’ – Charly
‘She’s always super excited and energetic’ –Year 9 class
‘Goodbye and good luck’ – Brendan
‘She is a great teacher and I will miss her’ – David
“My favourite part of the year was all my fun experiences: the
new friends I made, the jokes my friends and I shared, the
laughs we had. The times when someone would get in trouble
and our friends would sit with them and wait until they could
go. I would never give up all this for anything”
Teagan Brown
“I liked the whole experience! I have made friends. I have
been given great support by teachers.”
Mathan Rogers
This year it has been a great experience to
be part of the Riverside tech team, as it
brought participation in many events that
we have been able to learn through. We
have been able to make some new friends
while being part of the experience.
Alexander Nordling
This year for SOSE I went to my first
Chinese restaurant with the whole Year
Nine class, and my friends and I had
more than we needed to eat! In Duke
of Ed. got to visit historical sites in
Maryborough and visited grave sites
(spooky). I got to learn more about
the Anglican Church bell tower and got the
chance to ring it. In agriculture I was
rammed once and kicked in the knee
once by the same cow (ohhh)
So all in all it was a really good year.
Carolyn Casson
"This year has been an interesting year. I
have learnt a lot with the new sound
systems and enjoyed the year and hope for
the best next year."
News from the CHAPLAIN
Adaptable People
Adaptable: If You Won’t Change for
the Team, the Team May Change You.
“Inflexibility is one of the worst human
failings. You can learn to check impetuosity,
overcome fear with confidence,
and laziness with discipline. But for
rigidity of mind there is no antidote. It
carries the seed of it’s own destruction”-
Anonymous
“Blessed are the flexible, for they shall
not be bent out of shape” – Michael
McGriff
Characteristics of Adaptable People:
Teachable – Diana Nyad said, “I am willing to put myself
through anything; temporary pain or discomfort means nothing
to me as long as I can see that the experience will take me to a
new level. I am interested in the unknown, and the only path to
the unknown is through breaking barriers.” Adaptable people
place a high priority on breaking new ground. They are highly
teachable.
Emotionally Secure – Emotional insecurity sees almost
everything as a challenge or threat towards them. Suspicion or
rigidity is the response to change or the addition of another
talented person to the team. Being emotionally secure allows
us to evaluate a new situation or change based on its merits, to
embrace change and not to fear change.
Creative – Creativity allows us to find a way through difficult
times. There is an expression that says a person’s age can be
better determined by the degree of pain they experience when
they come in contact with a new idea. A Creative person hears
the words “Let’s try it this new way” and responds with, “let’s
try it. Let’s go there even if we blow it.” Not being afraid of
our failure – this can be one of the hardest things for us Adults
to deal with.
Service Minded – people who are focused on themselves are
less likely to make changes for the team than people focused on
serving others. Educator and college president Horace Mann
said “Doing nothing for others is the undoing of one’s self”. If
your goal is to serve the team, adapting to accomplish that goal
is not difficult.
So how are we when it comes to adaptability? If improving the
team requires us to change the way we do things, how do we
react? Are we supportive of new things, or would we rather do
things the way it’s always been done? If a member of the team
is having a problem, are we willing to change positions to help
out? We can be adaptable and we can model adaptability to our
students, imparting to them a skill that will better enable them
to deal with the Journey of Life.
The music department pushes on right to the end!
Earlier this term the taiko group performed at both the
official opening of the hall and awards night, as did the
ever growing jazz band. Also in the awards night the
9/10 music elective class performed Tubular Bells and
Sam Ryan and myself performed Spiegel im Spiegel,
both of which Mrs. McGann had incorporated dance
bringing the arts together.
At the final assembly Dylan Stackman, Daniel Lloyd and
Jaal Hanley performed as a Middle School rock band as
did Liam Taylor, Peter Green and Alicia Walker.
This week we are performing nine traditional
Christmas carols as part of our annual Nine Lessons
service at St. Paul's Anglican church in Maryborough.
Next week Mr. Molen has organised the Junior Choir
along with the String Group and puppet show to
perform at 2 nursing homes to bring them some
Christmas cheer.
Sadly 2 outstanding music students ‐ Peter Green and
Shauna Smith will be leaving us and I would like to take
this opportunity to thank them for all of their
contributions to music at Riverside and to their
parents for supporting them.
I would like to publicly thank all of our instrumental
teachers who work hard in the background preparing
and inspiring your children.
May I wish everybody a peaceful Christmas and a
prosperous and Happy New Year ‐ keep those kids
practising. Give a musical instrument gift this
purchase items at a reduced price (without the $3
handling fee normally added to each item), and of
course you’ll be able to spot the best value uniforms
before anyone else sees them! To register your
interest, please call Linda on 0429 787 982 A.S.A.P
The uniform shop needs your unused uniforms now! If you’d like to
make some money on the uniforms your children have grown out of or
will not be needing next year, now is the time to think about logging
them into the uniform shop.
All items will remain your property, be tagged, priced and displayed
until sold. Each semester, a cheque payment will be sent to the parents
whose uniforms have sold during the previous 6 months.
The uniform shop retains $3 of the selling price as a handling fee.
This is a fund-raising project which helps with the provision of leisure
facilities for the students. Previous applications have been sandpit/
playgrounds/seating/shade.
To have the greatest chance of selling, please deliver your washed and
ironed uniforms to the College during December as January is our
busiest selling month. It is essential that your items are contained in
a plastic bag clearly labelled with your name and phone number.
Lighthouse Pet Services—2012 Calendars For Sale
Is a non‐profit, volunteer‐run organisation that provides emergency care (including foster care and re‐homing) for
companion animals of individuals in crisis situations (e.g. requiring medical or aged care).
An example of the types of services that they provide are demonstrated through Ellie Watters' case (she has agreed to
share her story)
Mrs Watters was taken to hospital expecting to have to go into long-term aged-care. Worried for her companion, Zoey,
a maltese cross, she rang Lighthouse Pet Services. One of our volunteers picked Zoey up and cared for her in her own
home. She framed a photo and took it to Mrs Watters while she was in hospital. Once Mrs Watters recovered, Zoey was
returned to her. Mrs Watters was ever so grateful to know that her dog was cared for when she needed help of her own.
The money raised from the calendars will go to helping people like Mrs Watters. Money will be used for de‐sexing,
micro‐chipping, vaccinating, and feeding the dogs and cats that come into care. The calendars feature local
Maryborough and Hervey Bay businesses and rescue dogs/cats.
Each calendar is $15.00 See Miss Drexler for your copy. A GREAT Christmas present (especially for animal lovers)!
