Zone 26 Dressage Championships 

Glenorie was proudly represented by just 3 riders at this year’s Zone 26 Dressage Championships at 

Woodlands Park Pony Club. A boggy warm-up area didn’t put our riders off, with 5 first places, a fourth 

place, a fifth place, and two AGE CHAMPIONS between them! 

Glenorie came THIRD in the overall pointscore, not far behind second (Vines) and first place (Woodlands 

Park) - A great result considering that our team was so much smaller!

Pony Club News... Straight from the horse’s mouth! 

Somersby Equestrian Club 

Dressage 

Sarah Pernice had a very successful day at the Somersby 

Equestrian Club Dressage Day on 28th June, riding very 

well and winning her very first blue ribbon! If you look 

closely at that scoresheet, you can see that Sarah and 

‘Paige’ scored a few 7s! Great work Sarah!

Londonderry Pony Club Dressage Championships 

Felicity Bourke was the sole Glenorie representative at the Londonderry PC Dressage on the Saturday before 

the Zone 26 Dressage. It was a very well-run and relaxed event—a highly recommended date for your calendar 

next year! There were lots of options for younger and led/beginner riders, as well as for the older “kids”. 

Felicity and ‘Milo’ attempted their first Elementary tests together as preparation for the Zone Dressage with 

great results:

Twilight Showjumping at SIEC 

Lauren Nicholls and ‘Pixie’ have been out competing in the Twilight Showjumping at the Sydney International 

Equestrian Centre. Their latest result, from 19th June, is a fantastic 4th place in the 80cm class. Well done!

• Traveling Horse Statements are no longer required! 

• Events (including Rally Days) must still be registered with the DPI 

• A full record of all horses that attend each event must be kept, so please ensure 

that someone officially records your attendance on the day.

Cross Country practice (and GRADING) for Zone ODE—Thursday 17th July at Vines Pony Club 

On Thursday 17th July, Vines are allowing riders from other clubs to practice on their cross country course 

from 10am. Please let Lorraine know if you are planning to attend, as she needs to let Vines know how 

many to expect. 

Note that you do not have to be planning to attend the Zone ODE to come along to this practice day!

Glenorie PC Closed One Day Event—3rd August 

This year we will be running a Closed ODE open to all of our riders (Glenorie members only!). This is a good 

opportunity to practice before the Zone ODE, or to just have a go and see how much fun Eventing is! 

The day will be fairly relaxed, with a focus on instruction for our less experienced riders, and hopefully a few 

good challenges for those who are more experienced! We will be running the Cross Country one rider at a 

time, so everyone will be able to watch. 

We will be aiming to finish the competition early enough that everyone can have a chance to train over any 

parts of the Cross Country course they had troubles with. 

Morning tea will be provided as usual (but there won't be a set time for morning tea), and lunch (there will 

be a lunch break) will be BYO. The BBQ will be available to cook meat. 

As well as ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each Grade, we will be presenting some special awards: 

• Turnout (for the best presented horse and rider during all 3 phases) 

• Dressage (for the highest percentage scored in a dressage test on the day) 

• Jumping Style (awarded by the SJ judge) 

• Cross Country Encourager (for a rider showing great promise on the XC course)

Glenorie Pony Club receives Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Grant 

Our Club has been successful in obtaining a $1500 grant from the Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Community 

Grant scheme. Thank you very much to Keren Lavery for all the hard work she has put into obtaining not 

only this grant, but several others this year as well! 

D and D Star Certificates 

C and C* Certificate Exams were held during the last Rally Day on the 15th June—well done to those riders 

who took part. 

The next ‘round’ of exams (at a date to be advised) will therefore be D and D* exams. Both of these involve 

presenting in full Pony Club uniform (shirt, tie & jumper), a basic ridden exam, and some questions 

asked verbally regarding grooming, feeding, and general care of the horse. Plaiting is NOT required. The D 

Certificate can be attempted once a rider turns 7. The minimum age for the D* Certificate is 9. 

Information about the specific requirements for the Certificates can be found later in this newsletter. If you 

would like to receive instruction in any of these areas at a Rally Day, please let Lorraine know so an activity 

can be organised.

Junior Committee... 

Our Junior Committee has reformed this year, and all riders met at Morning Tea at the Rally Day on 15th June to discuss 

various ideas for the Club. 

Some of the ideas discussed include: 

• A fun night eg. iceskating, bowling, movies. 

• Camps during the school holidays. 

• Fundraisers eg. local car boot sale, selling choc, white elephant, sponsorship. 

• Repaint the clubhouse. 

• New uniform eg. helmet covers, jersey, horse rugs (in a new design). 

• A lounge area in the club house. 

Some ideas for Rally Days include: 

• Themed rally days eg. Fantasy. 

• More bushwalking. 

• Clinic days 

• Treasure hunts 

• Vaulting 

• Dressage

Regional Dressage School 

Woodlands Park Pony Club hosted a Regional Dressage School on 28th and 29th June. Eighteen riders from Woodlands 

Park, Vines, Hills and Glenorie gathered to take advantage of top-class instruction from Gina Haddad. Three 

groups of 6 riders had a 1 hour lesson in the morning and afternoon on both days. 

‘Bailey’ and ‘Milo’ both worked very hard with Meghan and Felicity aboard, and were producing some very nice work 

(but were very glad to get home for a big rest!). 

These Regional Schools are a great opportunity to gain instruction from some of the state’s top instructors, so keep 

an eye out for these.

Certificate work... 

D Certificate Syllabus 

The rider’s first introduction to certificates comes with the D Certificate. This is awarded for keenness and encouragement. The 

candidate must have reached a minimum age of 7 years before examination. The candidate should have attended at least three (3) 

rally days and have learned about elementary grooming, feeding and general care of a horse as well as basic riding. There is no 

written paper for this certificate 

Specific details regarding the examination for the D certificate are listed below. 

RIDING 

• Riders should present in full Pony Club Uniform. 

• The pony is to be tidy. 

• Mounting and dismounting. A mounting block may be used. 

• Being legged up. 

• How to hold and use the reins. 

• Capable of starting, guiding and stopping the pony and riding at the walk, rising trot and canter without being 

led. 

• Road safety rules-know the do’s and don’ts of riding on the road. 

• Take part in simple mounted games & rider exercises. 

HORSE HANDLING 

• Approach, catch and lead a quiet pony. 

• Tie a pony up with a rope at correct length, preferably to string, using a quick release knot. 

• Let the pony go in the paddock. 

• Give a pony an apple or carrot safely. 

HORSE CARE 

• Identify and demonstrate use of grooming tools: - dandy brush, body brush, rubber curry comb, hoof pick. 

• Saddle and bridle a pony, with assistance 

• Know the comfortable living conditions for a pony 

• Know what a pony eats and drinks 

• Identify parts of the horse: - Nostril, forehead, eye, ear, muzzle, forelock, crest, neck, mane, shoulder, 

wither, back, loins, rump, tail, hock, knee, fetlock and hoof. 

• Identify parts of saddlery: - Bridle, bit, reins, cheekstrap, browband, nose band, throatlash, saddle, 

girth,stirrups, pommel, leathers, seat, crupper and surcingle. 

• Know how to wipe dust and mud off saddlery and put away tidily.

Certificate work... 

D* Certificate Syllabus 

Most riders’ next move onto the D Gold Star certificate, although this is not compulsory. 

The candidate must have attained the age of 9 years and have gained further knowledge in grooming, feeding, and care of the 

horse. 

Candidates must have control of their ponies and show a more secure and correct position for flat work and jumping. This certificate 

is an extra activity for any Club wishing to include it in their curriculum and fill in the years from 9 to 12. 

The D Gold Star is not a prerequisite for any subsequent certificate. There is no written paper required for this certificate. Specific 

details for the D Gold Star certificate are listed below. 

RIDING 

• The rider is to be in full Pony Club uniform. 

• The pony is to be tidy. 

• Mount correctly (from a mounting block if necessary). 

• Dismount from either side of the pony. 

• Walk, rising trot and canter in a large area, including circles, straight lines and change of direction. 

• Make transitions on command. 

• Trot and canter at varying speeds. 

• Ride with reins in one hand. Hold and use a short whip correctly. 

• Trot on a loose rein. 

• Change trot diagonal on command. 

• Rising trot over poles on the ground in a forward position. 

• Negotiate small jumps of varied design from the trot. 

• Know simple traffic rules when riding on the road. 

HORSE HANDLING 

• Lead and turn a pony in hand at the walk & trot (with bridle) 

• Pick up and clean out front feet. 

HORSE CARE 

• Knowledge of basic feeding and care of the pony. 

• Basic care of the feet. 

• Identify parts of the hoof - Wall, frog, sole and heels. 

• Identify the farriers tools - Rasp, hammer, toe knife, buffer and pincers. 

• Identify parts of the horse - Throat, elbow, pastern, dock, coronet, hips, hock, stifle, ribs and cheek. 

• Identify & demonstrate use of: - Dandy brush, body brush, curry comb, hoof pick. 

• Identify parts of the saddle: - Cantle, waist, gullet, stirrup bar & sweat flap. 

• Clean and put away saddlery. 

• Describe the following conditions: - Girth gall, cold, colic and laminitis (founder).
