Castle of Old Wick
The ruins of the Castle of Old Wick are dramatically
located on top of steep cliffs overlooking the sea.
The simple four-storey tower is thought to have been
built in the late 12th or early 13th century when
Caithness was ruled by the Norse Earls of Orkney,
making it one of the oldest castles in Scotland.
Duncansby Head
Duncansby Head is the most north eastern tip of the
Scottish mainland. While John O’ Groat’s is a
successful tourist attraction, Duncansby Head reveals
nature at its most striking. After viewing the Lighthouse
and sights, a short walk south takes you round to
where the true beauty of the landscape can be
seen. This is a must see for anyone who likes their
scenery both natural and dramatic.
Dunnet Head
Dunnet Head is a peninsula in Caithness on the north
coast of Scotland 100 metres above sea level. It is
home to a lighthouse and at the viewpoints you can
see right across the water to Cape Wrath. Dunnet
Head is host to an array of wildlife particularly the
Atlantic Puffin and you may also see grey seals.
Olrig House
Olrig House is a grand home situated just outside
Castletown which is just east of Thurso. Visitors come
from all over to stay in the magnificent, tranquil
house and walk through the peaceful gardens.
Steeped in history with its many architecture features,
it’s the absolute peacefulness of the land that brings
people back time after time. Jump on services 80,
81 or 83 to/from Castletown to enjoy the beauty and
peace.
Thurso Castle
Built in 1878 by Sir Tollemache Sinclair and visible
across the rivermouth from the old town of Thurso are
the roofless but impressive remains of Thurso Castle.
A better idea of its gothic graneur can be viewed in
its still intact gatehouse and entrance arch off
Castletown Road.
