REFLECTIONS FROM THE RECTOR

Family: 

If we had church bells, 

they should be ringing! 

An exciting process is 

about to begin. We are 

entering into a visioning 

process here at Christ the 

King. Your vestry met in 

a vestry retreat in October 

and began looking at 

the vision of the church 

and its priorites. Now all 

of us are invited to small 

group meetings to continue 

this work and discern 

together how we can best 

serve God and each other 

at Christ the King and in 

our community. An ar- 

ticle by Senior Warden 

Ansgar Richter on the 

next page describes this 

process. 

So, why do we want to 

do this visioning process? 

We already have a 

mission statement. And 

we just did a visioning 

process in 2003. The results 

of that visioning process 

helped the church 

initiate a number of important 

projects. I am 

excited to see what the 

results of this process will 

be. 

Let me share with you 

some thoughts on the 

need for vision: 

- “Without a vision the 

people perish.” Proverbs 

29:18. This is also translated 

as ´the people run 

wild´. God knows that 

His people need a vision. 

That vision is like the 

star which the magi followed, 

giving direction and 

purpose. 

- Vision consists of core 

values (what we believe 

in and what our core purpose 

is) as well as an envisioned 

future (a description 

of what the church 

will look like). 

Let´s create a BHAG— 

(Big Hairy Audacious 

Goal). This means not 

just looking at where we 

have been and what we 

have been able to

complish, but looking to the future 

and setting an audacious goal. 

There can be smaller short term 

goals, too. One of my smaller, short 

term goals is to paint the inside of 

the church, but so much is involved 

in that, including wiring and windows, 

that this may be a BHAG. 

− A tag line, or short purpose statement, 

is used to spread the vision 

statement to everything we do. In a 

prior church where I served, we had 

put “Sharing the Joy of Jesus” on 

our letterhead, publications, and 

Who are we at CtK? Who could we 

be—if we just had the courage? Who 

are we called to be—and how do we 

get from here to there? We may have 

our own image of CtK, but how does 

this image compare with how others 

see our parish: its strengths, itsweakness, 

its future? And which of the 

different options we see would excite 

us most? 

To explore these questions together, 

we invite you to be part of a visioning 

process to take place between late January 

and mid Februarz 2010. At the 

heart of this process are 5-8 house 

groups in the different areas where CtK 

members live. Each of these house 

groups will be meeting twice at the 

convenience of the participants, once in 

the week of January 24-31 and the second 

time in the week of February 7- 

14. The visioning process should be 

over before the beginning of Lent on 

February 17. 

In the first of the meetings, we look at 

where we as a parish have come from, 

and who we are today: What do you 

like about CtK and what are the things 

you do not like very much? What are 

the images you would use to describe 

website. We preached this and used 

it as a focus for planning. We even 

had pencils and mugs with the tag 

line. 

- Maybe most important in all of 

this is prayer and discernment. This 

is not so much 

about what I 

want or what we 

want or where 

we have been, 

but rather 

searching out 

the will of God 

for our parish 

CtK? What does your involvement at 

CtK mean to you, and what are the 

things – social, spiritual or other 

things—that you do or don´t find at 

CtK? 

In the second meeting, the focus is on 

our future. How do we imagine—or 

hope—CtK to be in one, three, five, or 

seven years from now? Which are the 

things that would excite you personally? 

And what are the practical steps 

that we could take to get from here to 

there? 

Each of the house groups will be hosted 

by somebody (an individual or a 

couple) who will kick-start the discussion. 

However, we hope the evenings 

are going to be exciting and fun—and 

this depends very much on all the participants 

involved. These are not boring 

business-like meetings to plan the next 

project or event. 

There will be a house group in the homes 

of Alan & Jill McArthur in Hanau, 

of Alice Man in Frankfurt, of Abiola 

and Michael Sarnecki in Egelsbach, and 

a shared house group in the homes of 

the Richter and Greenberg families (in 

Oberursel and Bad Homburg respecti-

Dear Parishioner, 

This letter is going to every adult 

member of our Church. It's not 

asking for your money - we need 

your help! 

Visitors to Christ the King, and also 

its members, have always enjoyed 

the hospitality provided here. If the 

hospitality was ever a little less than 

usual, most people noticed it. 

In the past almost every hospitality 

function was organized by the Inreach 

Committee. This system can 

be improved. Our new system is 

based on two principles: firstly, 

more people helping, and secondly, 

not all chiefs and no Indians. To 

organize this, we need to know 

how many people are willing to 

lend a hand, even if only to provide 

finger food or sweep the floor. You 

can help if you can fit into any of 

the following four categories: 

1. Are you a hospitality provider? 

Hospros are people who 

bring a dish to share, whether finger 

food or cooked. If the provision 

of a dish comes at the wrong time 

for your finances, then you can tell 

the Hosco (see below) what you 

need to spend, especially with pizzas 

or fried chicken pieces or other 

bulk items, and he or she will reimburse 

you. 

If you do not wish to be reimbursed 

you should still get a receipt for 

what you spend and give it to the 

Vestry Fellowship Liaison. This will 

be added to the amount you have 

pledged and the amount on your 

Spendenbescheinigung (tax certificate) 

will be increased by that amount. 

What dish you bring is decided by 

you yourself or, if you need any 

advice, by the Hosco (see no. 3 below). 

2. Are you a hospitality 

worker?. Hoswos set up the tables 

and chairs, lay tablecloths, 

serve food, clear away and sweep 

up afterwards. Their job is to see 

that things run smoothly and that 

hospitality reaches the people enjoying 

it. They are organized by the 

Hosco (see no. 3 below). 

3. Are you a hospitality coordinator? 

Hoscos coordinate the 

hospitality providers and the hospitality 

workers for a particular project, 

find out who is available and 

willing, and agree with them what 

they will provide and what other 

help is needed. A Hosco is appointed 

for each separate hospitality 

event, and once a Hosco has agreed 

to take care of that event it is in his 

or her hands until it is over. 

4. Are you a hospitality event 

manager/organiser? For major 

events such as Thanksgiving, the 

Parish Picnic, Homecoming Sunday 

and possibly once again St. George's 

fellowship 

FELLOWSHIP AT CHRIST THE KING: A LETTER TO ALL PARISHIONERS 

and ANZAC day, Hosemos organise 

not only the catering but also 

the publicity and the entertainment 

which make the day an event. They 

will delegate most of the work involved 

and can and should ask for 

help from a Hosco.. 

All of the above helpers will be entered 

on a list so that they get full 

credit for what they do and so that 

the same people are not asked too 

often. And what if you volunteer 

for one or more of the above categories 

but cannot help when asked? 

Never mind! This is not a binding 

commitment – you just have to 

agree to be asked. You can say 

"Yes!" or just say, "Sorry, not this 

time!"

We have been meeting for a few 

months now, once a month in the

the chance to experience the Chapel 

floor for a night. 

What to bring!

For those who have always wanted to know 

what things are called, here is a short guide 

to the items used for Communion. 

Altar Cloth — The cloth which covers the 

altar. It is also called Fair Linen. 

Burse — A square pocket put on top of the 

chalice and paten. It is the colour of the current 

church season, so it matches the 

vestments the priest wears. 

Chalice — This silver or pottery cup holds 

the wine consecrated at the Eucharist. 

Ciborium — This silver box has a cover and 

is used to hold the bread consecrated and 

given to the people at the Eucharist. It is kept 

in the Tabernacle (the cabinet hidden by a 

ALTAR GUILD: BUSY BEHIND THE SCENES 

The women and men of the Altar 

Guild would like to explain a little 

about the seemingly mysterious 

things we do. In fact, the Altar 

Guild is a perfect ministry for those 

who prefer working behind the 

scenes and enjoy the quiet of the 

sanctuary before and after worship. 

(If you feel inspired to join us, 

please speak to me!) 

We are one of the smallest groups at 

Christ the King, but we are a dedicated 

group and work closely together. 

We also meet regularly to 

talk about our work and enjoy fellowship. 

Preparing the altar 

Altar Guild members work in teams 

of two. We meet before the service, 

usually on Friday or Saturday, although 

some experienced members 

come in early on Sunday mornings, 

to set up the altar for the Eucharist.

Corporal — A linen napkin placed on the 

altar cloth. The chalice, paten and other 

communion vessels are placed on it. 

Pall — A small, square piece of cardboard or 

metal which is covered with linen. It is used 

to cover the chalice—and keep out flies! 

Paten — A round, flat silver or pottery plate 

used to hold the bread during the distribution 

at the Eucharist. 

Purificator — A small linen napkin used to 

wipe the edge of the chalice. 

Veil — This silk square covers the communion 

vessels when they are not being used. It is 

the colour of the current church season. 

Our duties involve preparing the 

altar for communion, changing linens 

if necessary, filling the acolyte 

candles, preparing bread and wine 

and placing them on the table at the 

back of the church ready to be 

brought to the altar during the offertory, 

setting the credence table 

(the small table next to the acolytes) 

with chalices, extra wine, lavabo 

bowl and towel and leavers candle. 

After the service we clear everything 

away, carefully washing the 

chalices and other utensils before 

placing them back in the safe, cleaning 

up and attending to any issues 

with linens, candles, etc. 

Twice a year we also do special 

cleaning projects together (before 

Easter and before Christmas). We 

also wash and iron the robes and 

linens on a regular basis (we have 

someone who irons the linens at the 

moment but she would be very

at baptisms, funerals and weddings. 

At the moment Altar Guild consists

REMINDER 

Please remember that, with 

the spread of swine flu, 

Bishop Pierre has requested 

that all churches here in 

Europe stop the practice of 

intinction for now (dipping 

the bead into the wine). It 

seems safer, but studies show 

the opposite. So please either 

- share the cup (which is 

carefully wiped) or 

- cross your arms and wait 

prayerfuly while the chalice 

passes you.

CHRISTIAN ADULT EDUCATION The Chronicle 

EXCITING NEW LENTEN STUDIES TO BEGIN IN FEBRUARY 

These study 

groups will 

start in the 

week beginning

Each year during 

Lent you 

can join one of 

six small 

groups, geographically spread around 

the parish in peoples homes, for a time 

of study, discussion and fellowship. 

Lent is typically a time for reflection— 

and what better way to do it than in 

supportive groups of fellow parishioners? 

It is also a great way to get to know 

more people and become part of the 

parish family. This year the theme is: 

"When I survey ... Christ's cross 

and ours" 

There are five sessions: Darkness at 

Noon, Into Great Silence, The Child on 

the Cross, Outside a City Wall, Touch- 

ing the Rock. 

Topic: The death of Christ is a dominant 

and dramatic theme in the New 

Testament. So it’s not surprising that, 

over the centuries, the Cross has become 

the symbol of the Christian faith. 

But Christians do not honour a dead 

hero; we worship a Living Lord. According 

to the Bible, the death of Jesus 

is not the end of a track—it’s the gateway 

into life. His crucifixion gives rise 

to many key themes and you’ll explore 

some of these in this course including: 

the place of silence in our noisy world; 

despair and hope; a suffering world; the 

challenge of living as disciples when 

Christianity is no longer mainstream... 

Each participant receives a study booklet. 

There are texts to read ahead of 

time, Bible passages for study and questions 

for discussion. An accompanying 

CD has reflections from renowned 

(British) Christian thinkers who share 

their input personally in the style of a 

radio programme (approx. 14 mins per 

session).

JUNIOR YOUTH GROUP: 

OF SYMBOLS, VISIONS AND PANCAKES? 

Up to 21 members attend the junior 

youth group meetings which take place 

every week during the Sunday service. 

Junior Youth group members often have 

other responsibilities, such as serving as 

faithful acolytes, for example. We resumed 

meetings again in the New Year 

after the Christmas break at the 10th of 

January. 

We have 3 teaching groups currently led 

by Cara Kinsey and Robyn Lackey, 

Estelle Browne, and Ansgar and Dorothee 

Richter. The next teaching theme is 

the symbolism used in the church as there 

are so many elements to discover and 

explore in our faith. 

We are also excited that the Junior Youth 

group will also take part in the parish 

visioning process at the end of January 

and we plan to develop a questionnaire to 

support this process. So please don’t be 

surprised if you are approached by a 

young member of the church to answer 

some questions about Christ the King! 

The next major event planned will be the 

pancake supper together with the Senior 

Youth group on Shrove Tuesday (the day 

before Ash Wednesday). It is a fun-filled 

event in which people dress up in costumes 

and let us not forget the delicious 

pancakes cooked by the youth! Plus the 

proceeds raised at that supper go to benefit 

our youth programs. See you there!

YOUTH/ SUNDAY SCHOOL 

NEW LEADERS FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL 

We are blessed with a wonderful Sunday School program--children, teachers and 

leadership. Four the last four years, Abiola Sarnecki has been leading the Sunday 

School with great energy and commitment. Abiola is stepping down from this position 

to work on vestry and visioning, among other projects. Thank you, 

Abiola! (Please take the opportunity to thank her when you see her.) 

Paul Neaum, Catherine Brodie and Annie Bock have come forward to lead the Sunday 

School. They are all gifted teachers and able leaders, so the Sunday School will 

continue in good hands. I am so thankful for all of this. May God continue to bless 

our children as they grow in the knowledge and love of God. — Carola 

SAYING THANKS? 

A four-year-old boy who was asked to return thanks before Christmas dinner. 

The family members bowed their heads in expectation. 

He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, naming them one by one. 

Then he thanked God for Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, and all his aunts and uncles. 

Then he began to thank God for the food. 

He gave thanks for the turkey, the potatoes, the fruit salad, the cranberry sauce, the pies, the cakes, 

even the whipped cream. 

Then he paused, and everyone waited--and waited. 

After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, 

"If I thank God for the broccoli, won't he know that I'm lying?"

YOUNG SINGERS SAY FAREWELL TO DIRECTOR 

For several years now the Franciscans 

at the Liebfrauenkirche just 

behind the Hauptwache have been 

offering a regular half hour of music 

and text during Advent. The church 

is always full of expectant listeners, 

many of whom have fought their 

way through the Weihnachtsmarkt 

to get a seat. 

Last month’s concert by our parish 

Young Singers and harpists was no 

exception. Director Lucianne Brady 

had worked hard with the children 

to perform a short but effective programme: 

Excepts from Brittens’s “A 

Ceremony of Carols”, A Galician 

Christmas song “Nadal de Luintra” 

and the Nativity hymn “What Child 

is this?” to the tune of Greensleeves. 

The larger congregation was coaxed 

through “Ding Dong Merrily on 

High,” but were also allowed to sing 

“Stille Nacht.” 

This was the Young Singers’ last 

concert with Lucianne, and reminded 

us all of the wonderful contribution 

which she has made over the 

last eight years to the life of CtK.

There have been many a musical 

contribution to our services, with or 

without the adult choir (I particularly 

remember Elgar’s “Ave Verum”), 

often led by Lucianne from the harp 

itself. 

She has given many a child valuable 

musical training, introducing them 

to part singing and to a repertoire 

ranging from traditional church music 

to contemporary Australian 

songs. 

Former singers Thomas and Lizzy 

Sandlin have particularly fond memories 

of singing the “Hodie”, 

“Balulalow” and “This Little Babe” 

from the Ceremony of Carols. They 

even taped sections of it to the wall 

in their house! And when Lizzy joined 

the Atlanta Young Singers here, 

she was delighted to find that the 

choir was singing “The Wanderer” 

by Dan Walker, a friend of 

Lucianne’s. 

Others will no doubt remember 

nine of the singers who accompanied 

the adult choir to Hungary, 

processing up the very long nave of 

Eger cathedral whilst singing the 

“Hodie” with great poise – to an 

audience of hundreds. Current singers 

remember the fun they had at 

the Choir Weekend in 2008, when 

they shared the Grafenschloß Diez 

with the adult choir, then led by 

Wolfgang Weiß. 

At the time of going to press I can 

assure singers that your group will 

be continuing. 

Many thanks to Lucianne Brady for 

her eight years of service to this parish 

and in supporting this wonderful 

ministry. We wish you all the 

best!

Twenties/Thirties Group 

In addition to a trip to the 

Christmas Market in Strasbourg, 

we also had a local 

rendez-vous at the Frankfurt 

Christmas Market for a 

relaxing Glühwein after 

work. The group will hold 

a delayed-Christmas party 

on January 16 as a relief

in our church

for a Bible study.

right to limit the number of half-price 

tickets, so they like to have a firm 

booking. It is wise to get a ticket before 

Monday.

easy pace and usually on level ground. 

We can also visit different cities and 

see the sights.

MINISTRY FOCUS—OUTREACH The Chronicle 

Outreach 

„… to fulfill our Christian privilege 

of caring for others outside the parish…” 

I’ve always loved that part of our 

mission statement, particularly the 

emphasis on caring for others as a 

privilege rather than a duty. It’s something 

we do for ourselves as well 

as for our neighbors because in the 

end as St. Francis so wonderfully 

puts it, “…it is in giving that we 

receive….” (p. 833 The Book of Common 

Prayer). 

Outreach is one way we give at 

Christ the King. In the last few 

weeks this has been visible in the 

buying, wrapping and delivering of 

gifts for people in the homeless shelter 

Weser 5 in Frankfurt. In the 

summer we also threw a barbeque 

for the people there. We also give 

welcome packs and other support to 

German citizens who have been deported 

from the US, the Heimkehrer. 

There is a less visible side 

of Outreach which involves giving 

donations to groups all over the 

world in need of help and support. 

In fact 6 % of our parish budget goes 

towards Outreach projects, and 

most of this is in the form of financial 

gifts. The Outreach Committee 

(Eileen Mc Donald, Carol Hunter, 

Bill Ickes, Jin Hyo Kim, myself and 

any other willing parishioners!) 

meets to decide how much to give 

and to whom. These decisions are 

then approved by the Vestry. 

During the past year, the Outreach 

committee recommended and the 

Vestry approved the following donations: 

• Hope Romania 

• Our Little Roses 

• Future for Children 

• School fees for a Kenyan boy 

These are in addition to the funds 

we spend on helping Weser 5 and 

the Heimkehrer as well as making 

sure the Rector has enough money 

to help out in emergency situations 

at her discretion. In making donations, 

the committee focuses on projects 

that are recommended by parish 

members that have little other 

access to large institutional funding 

sources. 

Though the church has supported 

most of these projects in the past, 

through time the parish changes so 

many may not be aware of what we 

do as a parish. So would like to profile 

various projects in upcoming 

issues of The Chronicle. This 

time it’s „Hope Romania.“ 

Hope Romania - This unique 

project began in 1991 as a home for 

orphans in Romania co-founded by 

two women, Patty Baxter from the 

U.K. and Doina Nistor from Romania, 

and helped by loyal friends and 

workers. Their basic aim was to rescue 

orphaned and abandoned 

children and raise them in a secure 

Christian environment and to give 

them a start in life they would not 

otherwise have had. 

Using Patty's legacy from her 

mother, they bought a house, naming 

it „CASA HOPE“ and were 

allowed by the Ministry of Education 

to take in children. Doina and 

her husband Mihai were devoted 

houseparents to this large family of 

rescued youngsters (adapted from the 

website www.hoperomania.org.uk - 

January 4, 2010). 

Following its original goals of proving 

hope and love to children by 

giving them a family and education, 

Hope Romania has undertaken the 

following activities since it was 

founded: 

• bought and renovated a house 

in Baia Mare, a large mining 

town 

• rescued young children from 

very harsh backgrounds 

• given employment and security 

to an extended family of 

people who have worked in 

the house and with affiliated 

projects 

• bought a farm called The ‚Ark 

of Hope‘ 

• supports some local seriously 

disadvantaged families 

• is now helping children left 

behind by economic migrant 

parents 

• has gradually changed emphasis 

from the care and education 

of children to that of teenagers 

and young adults 

• completed a project for 

children with 

hearing difficulties 

and develop. 

Their work has 

touched the 

lives of many 

children and 

young people 

and the various 

activities continue 

to grown 

As a tribute on the website explains, 

it is an endeavour that makes the 

organizers and donators feel 

“blessed….[b]ecause by doing what 

we believe to be God's work we 

have turned a Christian children's 

Home into what we always hoped it 

would be: an oasis of hope to all 

who come.” 

A privilege indeed.

On behalf of the Newcomers Team at 

Christ the King, I would like to invite 

you to attend the next luncheon at the 

Rectory on 14 February 2010. 

If you are new to Christ the King in the 

This year's Thanksgiving Luncheon was a great 

success. Volunteers brought rolls, mashed potatoes, 

gravy, vegetables, soup, cranberries, desserts, 

pumpkin pie, and of course, turkey! We 

even had enough turkey for leftovers. Choir leader 

Simon led us in a few Thanksgiving hymns,

We will also be making sure we have advertising in the 

right places, e.g. targeted English speaking Frankfurt 

publications. There is much to be done! 

It is important to us that the quality of our work is professional 

and provides a good reflection of CTK to those 

meeting us for the first time. We hope we can draw 

people into our community, right from the beginning 

so people experience that warm welcome which God 

extends to us all.

BRUCE HUNTER MEMORIAL CONCERT: DARMSTADT, 

January 20, 2010 marks the anniversary 

of the sudden (and still unfathomable) 

death of our beloved 

Bruce Hunter. Bruce sang in the 

Darmstadt Opera Chorus for 17 

years. 

His colleagues will give a concert on 

Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at 

20:00 to benefit the education fund 

for Bruce and Carol’s daughters.

Rucksacks galore! 

In November we collected rucksacks— 

which were only taking up space in your 

cellar or attic and collecting dust—and 

donated them to a wonderful group: 

"GAiN-Global Aid Network", which 

supports children in countries such as 

Armenia, the Ukraine, North Korea, 

India, Uganda and Latvia. 

Thanks to the generous response of 

many families, 13 children are now the 

proud owners of a new (for them) school 

rucksack. In each bag we included maths 

and writing books, writing and drawing 

pads, crayons, pens, pencils, sharpeners, 

a fountain pen with cartridges or 

biro/pen with refills, ruler, erasers, 

pencil case, set of water colours, paint 

brushes, scissors, compass, soap, 

toothbrush, toothpaste, a stuffed animal, 

T-shirt, socks, a hat and some underwear! 

We were happy to drive the rucksacks, 

along with donations towards 

school materials, to the collection point 

in Wiesbaden.

Being the Feast of Harriet Bedell 

Dear People of God, 

A PASTORAL LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP 

ON RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN EUROPE 

During our October convention in 

Geneva, I could not help noticing the 

posters plastered everywhere that depicted 

a frowning woman in a chador 

in the foreground and minarets in the 

shape of missiles in the background. 

“Vote ‘Yes’ to banning minarets” said 

the poster. And as you know, a majority 

of Swiss voters agreed to do so. 

Being strangers in a strange land is not 

unknown to many of us. Among the 

more than four thousand members 

who make up our nineteen parishes 

and missions are many expatriates, and 

not just anglophones. There are of 

course many people who belong to one 

of our congregations in their own nation. 

As I reflected upon the Swiss vote to 

ban the construction of minarets, it 

occurred to me that we cannot consider 

ourselves to be apart from the 

situation in Europe, whether we are 

here for a short time or have always 

lived here. We ourselves benefit from 

religious freedom here, and we should 

expect it in our homelands. 

It was not always so. For instance, St. 

Paul’s-Within-the-Walls, Rome, could 

only be built after the new Republic of 

Italy in 1870 lifted laws banning non- 

Roman Catholic churches within that 

city. Our churches in France benefited 

significantly from the law of 1905 disestablishing 

the Catholic Church in this 

country. The freedom to practice 

one’s religion is something most Westerners 

take for granted, forgetting at 

our peril how hard-fought the battles 

were to secure it. 

For most of human history, every people 

had one religion, and everyone 

without question belonged to it. They 

were indistinguishable, in fact. In the 

ancient world, conquering a people 

meant destroying their gods who had 

failed to protect them, which explains 

the routine annihilation of enemies 

described by all ancient historians, 

including the first books of the Bible. 

This also explains the massacres and 

wars that followed schisms in the 

Church, including the Protestant Reformation. 

Until very recently, no one 

anywhere ever considered that a people 

could have more than one religion. 

Furthermore, those who deviated from 

the practice of the religion were considered 

dangers to the wellbeing and 

indeed, the salvation of the community. 

The seventeenth century saw the terrible 

religious wars on this continent 

that decimated the population to the 

point that finally, salvation began to be 

viewed as an individual, not communal, 

affair. With the birth of modern 

democracies began finally the freedom 

to worship as one chooses, although 

this right was not perfected until our 

own era. 

How easily we forget! And to forget 

history is to repeat it. In our situation 

especially in the Convocation, and also 

for the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, 

the right to practice one’s own religion 

remains very precious. 

So, as your Bishop I say to you that we 

must employ all possible means to argue 

for maintaining this right. It is just 

as wrong to ban minaret-building in 

the twenty-first century as it was to 

ban church-building in the nineteenth. 

Some of us who are not citizens of the 

countries we find ourselves in will say 

that this is not our affair. But it is our 

business, and not only because of our 

right to be Episcopalians in Europe. 

Back home, wherever home is, this 

right needs to be defended. Until freedom 

of worship is guaranteed worldwide, 

the tragic and bloody history of 

interreligious and inter-confessional 

warfare will continue to be repeated. 

On hearing this, some may reply that 

the Swiss vote, like other measures 

taken in France or the Netherlands, is 

not about religious freedom but rather 

national identity. However, our national 

identities across Europe and the 

Americas are first of all democratic. 

“France is a nation, not a race,” we 

French learn in our schools. This applies 

to all democratic nations: the 

system of government is our first identity. 

Americans being almost all immigrants 

are the best example of this, for 

to be an American means to hold allegiance 

to the country’s Constitution. 

Europeans can learn a lesson from this, 

as we seek to integrate more and more 

immigrants into this continent. Those 

who immigrate to our countries must 

be allowed to practice their religion as 

freely as all other citizens.

We all must work to maintain these 

democratic rights. 

At the same time, those who wish to 

immigrate to Europe should also uphold 

the system of government that 

guarantees freedom of religion. While 

one may not agree with the interpretation 

of the French secular principle (la 

laïcité) that bans the wearing of 

“ostentatious religious symbols” in 

public schools, it does apply to all people. 

I cannot wear my purple shirt, 

collar and cross in an American public 

school, for that matter, and I cannot be 

invited to address the student body. 

One may not agree, but it is applied 

across the board. Can we change the 

laws? Of course, by participating in the 

democratic process. But not by flouting 

it. 

Another example is the burka, the 

dress that covers a woman from her 

head down, including her face. It is 

quite clear that this dress is only a cultural 

tradition—the Qur’an does not 

require it. In fact, the Bible and the 

Qur’an have the same standard, 

namely, that women should dress 

“modestly,” which of course is defined 

differently in different cultures. 

A woman should be free to wear what 

she wants at home—a burka, a bathrobe 

or her “birthday suit” if she so 

chooses. (And yes, she has the right to 

choose in our countries—no one may 

force her to wear a burka.) The law 

should not forbid her to wear it on the 

street as well. However, the laws and 

customs of her new nation apply to her 

as well. One does not go outside in a 

bathrobe or naked in Western countries—no 

se fa, as the Italians say. 

Among us, covering one’s face is 

something only criminals do in the 

commission of a crime. In France, even 

nuns have to remove their habit for 

their identity card picture—in fact, no 

uniform, including a clergy collar or 

military dress, may be worn. So you 

should not expect to be well-received 

if you insist on wearing a burka in public. 

Here is the dynamic equilibrium that 

each of us should strive to maintain: 

the need to maintain the rights of constitutional 

democracy and the need all 

citizens have to respect the law. This 

means that each of us should be engaged 

in the politics of our countries. 

Our congregations as well should help 

us learn to help maintain the equilibrium 

between rights and responsibilities 

in our constitutional democracies, 

for our right to worship freely is essential. 

From earliest times, we Christians 

have been held responsible for the 

good order of our communities 

(Romans 13:7). As Jesus said, we are 

to be “salt and light” to those around 

us. In the twenty-first century, this 

means participation in our democracies 

both upholding people’s rights in making 

and enforcing the law, and living 

responsibly ourselves under the law. 

Let each of us be diligent in our duty.

turned away--he brought a

a family caught up to an 

Amish carriage. The owner 

of the carriage obviously 

had a sense of humor, because 

attached to the back 

of the carriage was a hand 

printed sign.. "Energy efficient 

vehicle. Runs on oats 

and grass. Caution: Do not 

step on exhaust." 

HOLY COMFORTER? 

One Sunday after church 

Mom asked her very young 

daughter what the lesson 

was about. Her daughter 

answered "Don't be scared, 

you'll get your quilts. " 

Needless to say, Mom was 

perplexed. Later in the day, 

the Pastor stopped by for 

tea. Mom asked him what 

that morning's Sunday 

school lesson was about. He 

said "Be not afraid, thy 

comforter is coming." 

WHY WE LOVE

An exasperated mother, 

whose son was always getting 

into mischief, finally 

asked him "How do you 

expect to get into Heaven?" 

The boy thought it over and 

said, "Well, I'll run in and 

out and in and out and keep 

slamming the door until St. 

Peter says, 'For Heaven's 

sake, Dylan, come in or 

stay out!'"

I used to be afraid of motorcyclists. 

Growing up I had head stories 

about chain gangs (Hell’s Angels), 

groups of mean people 

dressed in black with chains 

wrapped around their waists that 

they used as weapons when 

zoomed in on their motorcycles to 

a place where they terrified the 

people with their evil deeds. This 

idea changed when I met Jay. 

One day when reading the US military 

newspaper Stars and Stripes I 

was touched by an article about a 

young American named Jay Glasgow. 

After serving his military 

duty, he stayed in Germany, working 

as a civilian supply agent for the 

Army and married his German 

sweetheart, Ingrid. One morning 

he awoke and found that two ribs 

had been broken while he was 

sleeping. The hospital diagnosis 

was plasmacy toma—a tumorous 

cancer that affects the bones. Still 

in his 30s, Jay was given three 

months to live. 

The therapy began and he was exposed 

to all kinds of “chemococktails” 

as he called them. Of 

course, he saw all kinds of other 

patients in the hospital but what 

struck him most was the number of 

children. He admired their courage 

and endurance and called them his 

unsung heroes. He wanted to do 

something for the kids and with the 

hospital’s permission, he decided 

to throw a party. 

Jay was a Harley-Davidson man. It 

seems that “Harleys” (or HOGS, as 

they call themselves) join together 

to support worthy causes and that’s 

what Jay planned to organize. Each 

rider was to come to the hospital 

and bring a toy for a child: a Toy 

Run. They rode through all kinds 

of weather and many kilometers to 

reach their goal—but they came. 

On the day of the party, the hospital 

was transformed into a noisy, 

colorful, cheerful place with balloons 

and streamers bouncing 

against the ceiling, live music and 

decorations made by the children. 

Wheelchairs were pushed through 

the crowd with a variety of medical 

apparatus dangling over te heads of 

the hairless children who had grins 

on their faces. Hopeful parents and 

friends rushed back and forth with 

goodies and excited greetings. 

There were games to play, cake 

and ice cream to eat, and gifts to 

unpack. The children’s artwork 

hung on the walls, and T-shirts 

with the logo of the Toy Run had 

been produced to raise funds for 

the hospital. One dear soul had 

even dressed up in a fuzzy (and 

very hot) animal costume and 

greeted each person who came in 

the door. Children who were too 

sick to come down were included

HARLEYS, CANCER, TOYS AND A BIG HEART: A REAL STORY 

by TV monitor and visited by a 

select group including the fuzzy 

animal friend who handed out toys 

to each one. 

The moment came when the motorcycles 

were to arrive. One 

could hear in the distance the 

steady hum of approaching motorbikes. 

As it grew louder, the level 

of excitement rose and the deeply 

emotional moment came when, 

escorted by a police motorcade, 

500 Harley Davidsons zoomed into 

the parking lot. From the hospital 

balcony, a cheer went up as each 

rider was welcomed by the grateful 

crowd. It was a moment I will neve 

forget. 

Jay outlived the initial grim prognosis 

of death within three-six 

months and extended his life seven 

more years. He said the Toy Run 

was what did it for him. Each year 

he planned a new one and year it 

got bigger. 

As for me, I came to see that my 

initial idea about motorcyclists was 

narrow-minded. Now when I see a 

biker I am pleased and think maybe 

he is on his way to a Toy Run. God
