Reflections from
our rector
Dear Family
The Weihnachtsmarkt has
opened and, as I write this,
a Thanksgiving turkey is in
my oven. So this morning
I was reflecting on the joys
of Advent and Christmas.
There are so many activities
planned over the next few
weeks, both within and outside
the Parish. I encourage
everyone to take part in this
festive season in celebration
of the birth of our Savior!
Along with these celebrations
and activities, some
people may experience other
emotions. Experiences of loss,
grief, pain, loneliness, isolation,
anger, betrayal, fear, family
conflicts and many others
can be more intense d u r i n g
holiday seasons. Memories are
stronger, too.
The Rev. Carola von Wr a n g e l ,
Rector at Christ the King
at Christ the King, we have
mourned the deaths of six parishioners
(in the history of
the church there has been less
than one funeral per year o n
average). And many parishioners
have had deaths in their
families here and far away.
Many parishioners have had
serious health concerns. We
also have a finance crisis that
has affected us all. People
move away. Change happens.
Even good changes can evoke
stress. (In a major study on
the sources and results of
stress, death of children or a
spouse ranked highest. Va c ations
were not far behind.)
Pastoral Care at Christ
the King
I need help! While pastoral
needs are not only experienced
during holidays, more Pastoral
Care can be expected and my
schedule is busier than ever.
Even during the year, I have
learned that there are times
when I cannot do all the pastoral
work. At times I am
not aware of a pastoral need.
In some situations, I can
do crisis work or Biblical
counseling, but not all of the
ongoing, long-term work.
And in some circumstances,
someone connects better
with a dear friend or companion
than with the pastor.
Please forgive me if I have
failed any of you
After giving thanks, now comes the season of giving…God gave us
I also have other resources
There are some excellent
films dealing with such subjects
(for example, there are
two wonderful films about
dealing with A l z h e i m e r’s disease).
I have a list of English
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank Martin
and Jane Döbler, as well as
John Nolan and Nina Luttering,
for being there for me
when I needed a friend. I found
myself living in a country
where I didn’t have a single
the little boy in the Bible
through faith in God was I
Thanks to my cherished
Dear Jane and Martin, my
been able to see her through
University and a very beautiful
Thanks you Marianne Stern
I am sure, Walter is now smiling
What can I say? I can only
Helga Schmieg, I have always
watched and mimicked the
church. When I have to, I pick
your brains to help me raise
African children born in a
our culture most of the
Dear Jeff and Silvia Perkins,
Too many people to thank. As
the African proverb says, »It
takes a whole village to raise
A great gift that
lasts more than
a lifetime
Submitted by
Dennis Phillips
Christmas is when we try
to think of something to give
to others. Maybe a present
or even a great memory to
last a lifetime. But it is also
possible for each of us to
give something which lasts
beyond our life, something
which actually contributes to
the Greater Good and can
save someone else's life.
For those of us living in
G e r m a n y, the easiest way to
do this is to get and sign an
Organ Donor card (»Org a nspendeausweis«)
– legal proof
of your willingness to donate
your organs upon your death.
This issue is especially close
to my heart since I received
a liver transplant in May 2007,
the official start of my »second
life.« Former Christ the King
Rector Allan Sandlin, another
liver transplant survivor, and
myself are only alive today
thanks to someone else's generosity
as an organ donor.
Allan is also the one who
encouraged me and sent me
to Mainz to be operated on
by the same liver transplant
specialists who saved his life
– and mine.
Giving of yourself
Since most of us experience
Christmas as a joyous time
of year, why talk about org a n
donation now? I view this as
the most precious gift any of
us could ever make to a fellow
human – donating our
kidneys, liver, or heart to a
person who needs it just before
we depart. Every org a n
donor saves an average of
four other lives through their
g e n e r o s i t y. (Naturally doctors
must first determine brain
death before any organs can
be transplanted.)
As Christians we try to treat
others with the same compassion
and goodwill we hope
to experience in return. I
can think of no better way to
share than to declare yourself
as a potential organ donor.
Talk it over with your close
family and friends first so
they know of your wishes.
An Organ Donor card, which
you just have to sign and put
in your pocket, demonstrates
your willingness to share with
others what you won't need
in Heaven. For your own
O rgan Donor card go to
me, Dennis Phillips, at
Christ the King. I always have
a pocketful of Organ Donor
cards with me to hand out at
any time.
acted out short plays, based
on several Bible passages –
laughing our way to deeper
In the third session, each
participant went off alone to
listen and wrestle with a Bible
passage, coming together
as a group to share insights.
These are very diff e r e n t
ways of approaching the Bible,
in common. Participants gather
Scripture is a community
b o o k
When New Testament scholar
Daniel M. Patte attended
a worship service in Kasane,
Botswana, he was surprised
to find that the priest off e r e d
no sermon. Instead, the worshippers
took turns interpreting
the day’s scripture aloud.
After each commentary, the
others would pray for the
speaker. Patte’s translator told
him what others were saying
in the Setswana language.
When Patte’s turn came,
the others were able to follow
his English. But much as he
enjoyed the experience, Patte
was disappointed that after
he spoke, nobody prayed.

When he queried his translator
he was told, “You did not
ask!” The translator had neglected
to convey the final line
of each person’s commentary:
»Brothers and sisters pray
for me, that I might better
understand the Scripture.«
Do we need one another
in order to understand our
sacred texts? Given its central
role in the Christian faith, one
would expect the Bible to be
a source of unity. Too often,
h o w e v e r, Christians loudly
disagree on a variety of issues,
their only commonality
being that they all cite scripture
to justify their conflicting
positions.
Some observers simply
conclude that the Bible can
be used to prove any point
and is therefore meaningless.
A growing number of others,
like Patte, see the challenge
d i ff e r e n t l y. They believe that
through an overemphasis on
private interpretation and
Bible study conducted only
among the like-minded, we
have forgotten that the Bible’s
creation, reception, and ongoing
interpretation are inherently
communal.
» S c r i p t u r e ’s a community
book,« says Sister Te r e s a
Okure, professor of New Testament
at the Catholic Institute
of West Africa. “Individuals
may have written it, but it’s
a community that accepted
it. And the community said,
‘This is what really expresses
our faith.’ So we really do
need one another to be able
to understand.”
I have little sympathy for
the protagonist of “I’m Dreaming
of a White Christmas”.
For a large portion of my
early life a white Christmas
was but a dream and yet, even
as an oil brat in Ve n e z u e l a ,
Christmas managed to be
really “Christmassey” in spite
of the fact that I had to get
used to the local customs.
Christmas trees existed in
Venezuela, an import from
the “gringos”, and they were
being sold everywhere along
the roads. The traditional
Christmas decoration, howe
scene. Derived
from the
Spanish custom,
“el
of the
Venezuela, the traditional
bringer of “Niño Jesús”,
who was increasingly faced
with tough competition from
“Sahnta Close” (Santa Claus).
The only hint of a “white
Christmas”, albeit in a completely
different sense, was
the ponche crema, a sort of
eggnog traditionally drunk
at Christmas, made of milk,
eggs, sugar and rum, to go
with “hallacas”, the traditional
Venezuelan Christmas
dish. Hallacas are a sort of
pastry made out of maize
(corn) dough and filled with
capers, olives and meat, wrapped
in plaintain leaves, and
b o i l e d .
When the season came
around at the private Spanishspeaking
school I attended,
peace on Earth and goodwill
really did seem to reign for
that short period. There were
almost no regular classes,
and we all made
“ h a l l a c a s ”
t o g e t h e r.
The whole school put on a
pageant for the parents with
us dressed as characters from
the Bible, we would parade
singing “aguinaldos”, which
are Venezuelan carols accompanied
by the typical
Venezuelan instrument, the
“cuatro”, akin to the ukulele.
No “Happy Holidays” or
Hallacas is the
traditional Venezuelan
wrapped in cornmeal
and plantain leaves
Maybe all this nostalgia
is why my eyes grew misty
when I recently re-d i s c o vered
is turning 50 this year (17
Dec.) and, in his old age, I
wanted to make sure he could
remember the date! It will
also help him remember my
birthday which is exactly
half the wedding date – except
the year, of course!
So after church on Sunday,
10 October 2010, about 130
people squeezed into the wedding
room of the Rathaus
Oberursel, which usually seats
only 50 people. A p p a r e n t l y,
it was the largest group of
people ever to show up at a
wedding there. And don’t forget,
this was only the small
wedding! The "big one" is set
for 27 August 2011 at Christ
the King! So mark your calendars
now, we need to top
the 130 mark!
Both Rainer and I would
like to add an extra special
thanks to our little matchmake
what was going on inside us,
long before we did!
The Boniface
Pilgrimage –
part 1
Submitted by Jane Döbler
Ten o’clock on a Saturday
morning, and especially on
the first day of the autumn
break is extremely early for
some – but 12 brave pilgrims
gathered in front of
the Cathedral in Mainz on
S a t u r d a y, 9 October, to
set out on part one of the
Boniface Pilgrimage. We
were rewarded with super
s u n s h i n e !
The Boniface Walk follows
the tracks of the funeral
procession which, with
great public interest, brought
the body of the missionary
and church reformer St.
Boniface to his final resting
place in the year 754. T h e
beginning and the end of this
172 km pilgrimage are the
two bishops’ seats of Mainz
and Fulda with their magnificent
church buildings. A l o n g
the way one passes through
fields and meadows, idyllic
towns and villages, hills and
Smiling pilgrims at the first
“station” along the Boniface
Walk, the “Kastel am Rhein”
woodland. There are many
places of interest to visit on
the way, and cafés too!
The first part of the walk
took us from the old cemetery
behind the cathedral in
Mainz, the Leichhof down
to the River Rhein, over to
Mainz Kastell and through
parks and meadows to the
Mainspitz, where the Main
flows into the Rhine. A f t e r
that we hiked through the
flood plains and took time at
a playground for our younger
pilgrims to enjoy some
playtime and for our older
pilgrims to have lunch in
the sun!

Ecumenical
Service of Music
On Saturday, 30 October,
the English-speaking parishes
in Frankfurt came together to
celebrate a very special Ecumenical
Service of Music and
Word in the beautiful setting
of St. Leonhard's Roman
Catholic Church in downtown
Frankfurt. The service is part
of the program of the Frankfurt
Interkulturelle Wo c h e n
and was therefore well advertised
in the press. Thus, we
did not only have members of
our own congregations there,
but also interested citizens of
Frankfurt that attended the
w o r s h i p .
An important part of the
service was the special music
and hymns from each of the
five parishes, including different
soloists and choirs.
Frauke Omoruyi and Simon
Harden stood out with a prelude
by Johann Sebastian
Bach and an Adagio from
Sonata No. 1 by Johann Christoph
Pepusch. The A t t e r b e r r y
Mass Choir arrived a bit on
the late side but just in time
for their gospel music performance.
Of course, the gospel
singers got the congregations
to clap and swing and it has
been well worth it to wait for
our friends.
This autumn, the children of
the Christ the King Sunday
School were introduced to
Heifer Project International.
The project is a unique charity
that helps children and
families around the world
receive training and animal
gifts that help them become
self-reliant. As our contribution,
the children r e a d b o o k s
a n d parishioners pledged money
for all completed books.
We don’t have an exact figure
yet, but well over € 9 0 0
were raised!
We read true stories about
families who received animals
a n d a b o u t h o w t h e i r l i v e s
changed for the better. We
considered the pros and cons
of the animals which are most
productive in different areas
of the world. We read many,
many books, and finally we
made a list of the animals we
wanted to donate.
This list was:
A heifer ($500)
A pig ($120)
A llama ($150)
A hive of bees ($30)
A pair of rabbits ($60)
Adding these up came to
$890. At first, we thought
we didn’t yet have that much
m o n e y, but we were sure that
the CtK grown-ups would be
happy to help us get there.
And we were right. After our
presentation in church on
S u n d a y, 7 November, people
came forward with 140 euros
worth of further donations,
bringing our grand total up
to over € 900! Taking the
dollar exchange rate into account,
we will probably be
able to support the purchase
of even more animals.
We would like to thank
everyone who read, sponsored
or helped in any way. We plan
to support Heifer Project
again next autumn.
For one night only, our
Undercroft was transformed
into a candle-lit club in honor
of the Time and Talent A u ction.
We raised over € 3 , 0 0 0
in live and silent auctions
towards remodeling our Undercroft!
Everyone enjoyed
Vestry cooked chili, A i m e e
Schmidt and David Brown
graced us with their musical
talents, and the very funny
Ted Wheeler was our auctioneer
for the evening. In the
end, everyone probably drank
a bit too much and spent a
little too much money, but it
was all for a good cause and
a good time. Special thanks to
all the volunteers and donors
for their help with this event!
In case you missed out
on the action, there are still
some volunteering positions
open. Carol Hunter is looking
for 3 more gardening
volunteers, Millicent Addo
is seeking 2 painters, and
Christine Wohlleber is looking
for window washers.
These ladies will donate money
will come forward to help
For one weekend, the majestic
grandeur of the A l p s
served as a backdrop for
the 20/30s group retreat. T h e
destination: Hohenschwangau
and the glorious fairy tale
castle of King Ludwig of
Bavaria. The goal: fellowship,
introspection and sharing
around the theme of “Openness
and Honesty”. The benefits:
fun, getting to know
each other better, and enjoying
fresh mountain air during
our hikes, and discovering
our talents as the makeshift
“von Trapp Family”.
The outing started on Frid
a y, 5 November, with 12 of
us piling into three cars with
our personal gear, snack bags
provided by Katy, and James’
magic rucksack. We stayed
at the Gästehaus We i h e r, a
cozy inn with a perfect view
of Neuschwanstein soaring
into the sky.
S a t u r d a y ’s agenda included
a hike up the mountain
to the castle for an
English-language tour,
followed by a walk over
the Marienbrücke for breathtaking
views back to the castle.
A picnic lunch on the mountainside
was followed by yet
another walk, this time
around the Alpensee. We
rounded the day off with
a hearty dinner of Bavarian
food and beer.
On Sunday, James led a
lovely morning service and
everyone had the chance to
contribute by reading a Bible
passage. Afterward we went
back down to the A l p e n s e e
and enjoyed the guitar skills
of Heidrun and David during
a lake-side sing-along. T h e
other tourists also enjoyed
our musical efforts! The short
weekend came to a close when
our three cars, a bit lighter
but still full of frivolity, made
their way back to Frankfurt
and our respective homes.
One of the highlights of
the weekend was James’
impressive rucksack, which
continually produced only
good things: lunch in the
afternoon, Bibles in the evening,
drinks, music sheets
We were blessed with wonderful weather for our mid-autumn
outing, and postcard-perfect views

group of musicians, including
and an improvisational rhythm
section, including a dancer,
double pass player, percussionist,
and flutist. To perfect
Let me offer a special thanks
to Emily Sladdin, Marina Benson,
and the rest of the youth
ensemble. When I first mentioned
the idea of a Broadway
night, they were so excited.
Little did I know that they
would work so hard to pull
the music together, despite
the daily challenges of their
regular school responsibilities.
Emily recruited the musicians
and arranged rehearsals,
and Marina put in many hours
arranging music from We s t
Side Story for the ensemble.
Congratulations to them on a
job well done, and I trust that
my tired voice at the end of
the program did not detract
from their wonderful playing.
Annie Bock did a splendid
job accompanying on the piano.
This was the first time I
have worked with her, and I
am impressed with her ability
as an accompanist.
Another added bonus was
the help and performance of
and I asked to her
if she wanted to participate.
I could not have known then
that she would add so much to
the program. Katia performed
to “The Theme from Love
Story” and danced with
me (as I stumbled along) to
“I Could Have Danced A l l
Night”. She also led young
and old in following the yellow
brick road as we skipped
along to some Wizard of Oz
c h o r u s e s .
And that's not all. A n g u s
and Karen Foxley were invaluable
in the improvisational
p l a y e d d o u b l e b a s s , a n d
Karen played flute and clarinet
and sang along with me.
She also gave us a piano solo
of “Memories”. They brought
along their colleague Lucas
on percussion. My friend Dan
Carter worked the lights, and
Chris Palmer worked on the
stage setup. Sylvia W h e l a n
helped with refreshments,
and others chipped in along
the way.
Due to some musicians
donating their talent, we were
music. Thanks to all who
attended, and I look forward
is also a schedule of all our
services, beginning with Lessons
opportunities to invite
friends and neighbors, as well.
Many people seek a place to
worship during Christmas and
are just waiting for an invitation.
Invite them!
In the midst of these schedules
and your own travels
and festivities, please also
take time for quiet reflection.
What and who
are we waiting for in
Advent? Why is C h r i s tmas
central to our faith? W h a t
do the prophecies of Isaiah
mean to me today? What is
meant by the “Prince of
Peace”, for example? What
can I or we do to help those
whose Christmas is not
m e r r y ?
May the Prince of Peace
prepare for Christmas, the
Sunday School Team is organizing
a Christmas Party
for children ages 3 to 10
years old. The purpose of
the party is to play some fun
games but also get prepared
to enter into the Spirit of
Christmas. Of course, there
will also be some gifts.
Unlike previous years, the
children do not need to rehearse
for the Christmas pageant
during the party. Instead,
children will watch a
sneakpreview of the “Brown
Bag Christmas Pageant” acted
out by some of Christ
the King’s most prestigious
To make this party a success
for the children, we need:
Yes, the pageant this year
is called the "Brown Bag
Christmas Pageant". T h e
Script tells the story of the
coming of a King born on
Christmas day; it a visual
display of the story but beyond
what the eyes can see,
you may be in for some surprises,
for example Mary
and Joseph may be asked on
the spot to tell their story to
the congregation, or the donkey
may be asked to "heehaw"
etc.
This is a telling that draws
from our memory, triggers
our imagination and invites
us to wonder about this mystery;
it invokes wonder, awe,
and amazement.
On Christmas Day, after the
morning service we will gather
for a traditional Christmas
Dinner in our Undercroft.
If you don't have a big family
of your own, you are very
welcome to join us for turkey,
sweet potatoes, red cabbage
with your church family
at Christ the King.
The idea to have a Christmas
Dinner for us expatriates
was born many years ago in
1999, when our beloved interim
priest Rev. Paul Fisk
and his wife Jean invited parishioners
over for a Christmas
Dinner at the Rectory.
As single mothers, my friend
Sandy and I thought this was
a brilliant idea, better than
celebrating separately and
each only with our boys for
c o m p a n y.
Shortly after this announcement,
Rev. Paul died unexpectedly
of a heart attack and
we all were in shock and grief.
Paul was such a lovely person,
a very good and close
friend to many of us, one of
those true saints, if you ever
met one. As Christmas was
fast approaching, Sandy and
I decided that, in spite of our
grief, we would do the Christmas
dinner anyway, fulfilling
Paul's wonderful idea.
On Christmas Day around
20 parishioners gathered
around the big table in the
Rectory and it was a good
thing to do so.
So come to the Christmas
Service on the 25th and join
us for the CtK family Christmas
dinner afterwards. Yo u
