Thirteen persons <strong>of</strong> a pic-nic party from <strong>Lynn</strong>, drowned in Ljnnfield Pond,<br />

August 15.<br />

Ten hour system — that is, ten hours to constitute a day's work — generall<br />

adopted. Previously the time was indefinite. Bells were rung at 6 p. m.<br />

1851. On March 18, and April 15, the tide, during violent storms, swept entirely<br />

over Long Beach.<br />

Blue fish appear in the <strong>of</strong>fing, in large numbers, in early autumn, and are<br />

supposed to have carried on a successful war against the menhaden, as<br />

bushels <strong>of</strong> the latter were picked up dead on the shore.<br />

Magnificent comet, Donati's, visible in the north-west, in the autumn.<br />

Catholic Cemetery, St. Mary's, consecrated, Nov. 4.<br />
